PB hotel design editorial

Rising above Luanda's Miramar district on Angola's Atlantic coast, a curtain-walled glass tower announced the InterContinental Luanda Miramar as the country's most ambitious hospitality statement when it opened in 2015 — a property conceived at the height of Angola's oil-boom optimism and designed to signal Luanda's arrival as a serious address for international business travel. The tower's blue-tinted glass skin, visible in the pool terrace images, catches and fragments the coastal light across its full height, while the porte-cochère entrance presents dark polished granite columns trimmed in gold — a register of corporate confidence that sets the tone before guests step through the revolving doors. Inside, the 286 rooms and suites take their cues from the Atlantic horizon visible through floor-to-ceiling glazing on every level. The guestroom interiors work a controlled palette of teal carpet with geometric white inlay, grey upholstered bed platforms, and sculptural oval side tables in dark macassar-finish wood — an approach that keeps the eye moving toward the water rather than competing with it. The rooftop pool terrace, cantilevered against the tower's glass facade, arranges teak sunloungers around a freeform main pool and circular plunge pool with views over the harbour and Luanda Bay. Most arresting of all is the bar, where a monolithic counter carved from cream-and-rose-veined marble sits against backlit honey onyx shelving set into dark timber panelling — a composition that gives the room a warmth the tower's exterior deliberately withholds.

"Our experience was amazing at the InterContinental Luanda Miramar. Luanda is a market still in transition for international tourism and I have to say that we saw the Intercontinental as our safe haven and home away from home. The physical property is outstanding with great F&B offerings and even an outdoor park for your morning walks or short runs. We frequented the pool bar/restaurant both day and night with the exception of a rooftop weekend brunch which you have to try if you are there on a weekend. The 1st floor restaurant served themed buffets with abundant choices and the bars pour great drinks. But what really made this hotel stand out was the amazing level of personal service we received. From Irene Boaventura, the Chief Concierge, to Nuno Neves, the General Manager, everyone took such good care of us. They helped guide us not only in the hotel but when we traveled to see the amazing natural beauty of Angola. Being in the hospitality industry my entire professional career sometimes I take things like this for granted as expected in a luxury hotel. But the personal level of service and engagement in this hotel was so memorable I needed to share it. If you are going to Luanda this is clearly the best choice you can make."

"It's no wonder why this hotel is so highly rated. The staff is friendly, the rooms are clean, and the food is delicious. Irene at the front desk is the kindest hotel employee I have ever met, and Sebastian was super helpful in arranging our transportation to the airport. These two people understand customer service! If all hotels had employees as great as them, traveling would always be enjoyable. Thank you for a fabulous stay!"

"I'd like to say a huge 'Thank You' to the Intercon in Luanda, and most particularly to all of the staff. I stayed with you for 11 nights from 4th to 15th May, a first class experience in every respect. From the moment the limo collected me from the airport, to the moment of checking out, the hotel experience worked perfectly. Check in was friendly, professional and swift. The room was comfortable, clean and exceptionally well serviced every day. The restaurant - well, big thanks to the fantastic chef and his delicious food, whether the buffet, whether the À la carte, whether the Buffet or whether the specialist themed nights (Asian Evening was marvellous) and also the food via the room service, which was prompt and arriving piping hot in a heated trolley. The choices for breakfast were also very good, and were available from 0600 which was very helpful because of my working hours. Thanks also particularly to Marcolino, the restaurant manager - he and his staff did a great job - consistently friendly, customer centric, professional and incredibly prompt service. I also enjoyed using the spotlessly clean and well equipped gym. Summary (I travel globally a great deal) is that the Luanda Intercontinental provided everything I needed and did so to a very high standard; I will have no hesitation booking again for my next visit. One tiny niggle, I had a very early morning departure and wanted to settle the account the evening before departure, ensuring I could depart promptly. Whilst this was perfectly possible, it was not possible to obtain an invoice which showed the final night's charges (necessary for company accounting) and I had to check out in the morning. As it turned out, the checkout experience was also very well done, and seamless with no queues or problems - but it was unclear why I couldn't obtain a complete invoice the previous evening. Intercontinental Miramar gets 10 / 10 in my book; based on that experience I shall certainly be looking for an Intercon wherever I go. Thank you again to all the marvellous staff - you are the most important part of any hotel experience, and you did a great job."
