PB hotel design editorial

On the southern shore of Lago Nahuel Huapi, pressed between lenga beech forest and the glacier-fed water, a cluster of blue-painted timber buildings sits so low against the landscape that from across the lake they nearly disappear into the treeline. Las Balsas has operated from this spot in Villa La Angostura since 1992, its fifteen rooms distributed across structures whose steeply pitched rooflines and dormer windows draw from the European Alpine vernacular that Swiss and German settlers brought to Argentine Patagonia in the early twentieth century — a tradition the hotel wears with ease rather than as costume. Inside, the rooms demonstrate real spatial invention: one suite is contained within a conical pavilion, its radial pine rafters fanning to a central ridge in a geometry more boathouse than bedroom, furnished with a repurposed wooden hull transformed into open shelving. Another room places the bed on a raised pine platform beneath an exposed gable truss, a colorful canvas on the end wall providing the only bold gesture in an otherwise warm and understated palette of terracotta plaster, wide-plank floors, and linen. The dining room layers deep aubergine walls with gallery-hung small-format paintings in gilt frames — an intimate scale calibrated to the cold outside. The spa pavilion, framed in heavy timber and river stone, opens onto a heated outdoor pool that steams against winter snowfall, completing an atmosphere that belongs entirely to this particular edge of the Andes.

Las Balsas Reviews

"Las Balsas came highly recommended by a friend of friends and native Argentinian. The lakeside, beachfront location is gorgeous, with stunning views. It feels like a luxurious mountain lodge, not like a hotel, with bespoke furnishings and artwork, lovely grounds and gardens, and wonderful service. A couple miles of dirt roads lead you to a private gravel drive with ample parking. The pool is sublime. We had dinner in one night, expensive but good (not amazing). Staff goes the extra mile with a smile, even preparing an early to-go breakfast before our Seven Lakes Route day trip. It's a splurge to be sure, but if you're looking a little "rustic luxury" in an idyllic location, you can't do better."

"We recently spent 3 nights at Las Balsas in a villa. The best part of our stay was the room which was excellent - spacious, well laid out and with a great view of the lake through the trees. Also the staff are great and very friendly. Unfortunately there were some negatives which considerably impacted our stay. 1. The food The food at lunchtime and in the evening is really rich and heavy. There are no lighter options and the menu is the same each day. We would have loved to be given some lighter options particularly at lunch time. Also Las Balsas doesn’t cater well for vegetarians; despite us contacting the hotel well in advance to inform of dietary requirements, there were no vegetarian options on the menu. When we queried this we were told that we could choose the meat or fish options without the meat or fish or have the two starters that were vegetarian ! After complaining, the hotel did put together a vegetarian menu but the options were decidedly uninspiring. Also there is very little choice at breakfast and my poached eggs arrived almost raw each morning and I had to send them back - not what I would expect at a Relais & Chateaux hotel. 2. Walking / hiking We were told in advance of our arrival that there are numerous walking trails from the hotel however this isn’t the case. There is a short path walk but all of the other walks require a car or taxi to the start point. During our stay we walked to Inacayal Waterfall and to Quetrihue Peninsula, for both walks the hotel arranged a taxi to take and collect us from the start/finish point. We took the catamaran from the port to the peninsula and were hoping to walk back but the 12 km route was closed because of the weather. We had hoped to walk round the lake shore from the hotel but this is not possible because of wide streams and the terrain. The furthest you can walk is 10 minutes in either direction. 3. Hotel location The hotel website gives the impression of a secluded lakeside resort, but it is actually along an unmade track from a main road with quite a lot of buildings nearby. So to summarise, a beautiful room and very friendly staff (especially Sergio and Victoria) but our stay just didn’t meet our high expectations, given the cost and the Relais & Chateaux label."
