PB hotel design editorial

Conceived at the height of Buenos Aires' Belle Époque ambition, when Recoleta's tree-lined avenues were being deliberately fashioned in the image of Paris's 8th arrondissement, the building that became the Alvear Palace Hotel opened in 1932 to designs by architects Gastón Mallet and Luis Dubois. The French Second Empire facade — mansard roof punctuated by oval dormers, rusticated limestone base, wrought-iron balconies stepping back in careful rhythm from Avenida Alvear — remains one of South America's most assured examples of the style, its cream stonework catching the late-afternoon light in a way that makes the building appear almost self-illuminating at dusk. Inside, the tension between preservation and renewal is handled with considerable restraint. The hotel's 210 rooms and suites deploy a palette of warm caramel, ivory, and charcoal — dark walnut-leather headboards against white panelled walls, chrome-framed bench seats at the foot of beds, mirrored console tables carrying a quiet Art Deco inflection — while the ground-floor Jardin restaurant unfolds beneath an arched glass conservatory roof supported by lacquered black trellis screens, cane dining chairs arranged around a central verde marble pedestal table. The rooftop bar, where bistro chairs cluster around marble-topped cafe tables beneath a timber pergola strung with Edison bulbs, positions the building's original Mansart-derived stonework as a backdrop for an entirely contemporary evening ritual, the Río de la Plata visible beyond the city grid at twilight.

"Extremely disappointing experience at Alvear Palace Hotel Buenos Aires, especially considering the premium pricing and reputation of the property. My wife and I arrived after a 14-hour international flight completely exhausted. Instead of being welcomed warmly, we were indirectly pressured into paying an additional USD 150 for an upgrade in order to receive our room immediately. When we declined, we were told to wait until the standard check-in time at 3 PM. After spending the day outside and returning extremely tired, we finally went to sleep — only to receive a call from reception at 2:44 AM saying someone was waiting for us downstairs. This unnecessary disturbance in the middle of the night was unacceptable and extremely unprofessional. The following morning, I requested an explanation from reception, but no one could provide one. I also asked to speak with a senior manager or higher authority, which the hotel staff refused. Things became worse before our departure. Since we had an early morning flight, we requested a takeaway breakfast. At no point did the reception team inform us that certain items would be chargeable. Later, we received a message saying the hotel was “doing us a favour” by providing basic items like sandwiches and yogurt. When my wife called reception for clarification, the staff member spoke extremely rudely and used unacceptable language, saying: “If you don’t want the favour, pay for it or leave it.” For a hotel that markets itself as luxury hospitality, the attitude, arrogance, and lack of warmth from the staff were shocking. The property may look beautiful, but service is what defines a luxury hotel — and unfortunately this hotel failed badly in that department. There are far better luxury hotels in Buenos Aires where guests are treated with professionalism and respect. I would strongly advise travellers to think twice before spending a large amount of money here."

"We were here for our night before embarking on the Seabourn Venture. The room was very nicely decorated in a modern way. Location was convenient for visiting the nearby park with its huge, old tree and looking at grand old mansions. Personnel were friendly and helpful. It felt special staying there because it has a long history. I would stay there again without hesitation."
