PB hotel design editorial

At the turn of the twentieth century, when Recoleta's landowning families were building their Buenos Aires mansions in conscious imitation of Haussmann's Paris, the Duhau family commissioned a Beaux-Arts palace on Avenida Alvear that would become one of the finest examples of the genre on the continent. That building — four storeys of limestone pilasters, mansard rooflines, and carved stone balustrades stepping down to a formal garden — now anchors the Palacio Duhau Park Hyatt Buenos Aires alongside a purpose-built contemporary tower, the two structures connected underground and held in careful counterpoint above grade. The original palace interiors are preserved with genuine fidelity: parquet de Versailles floors, deeply coffered ceilings encrusted with foliate plasterwork, and gilt chandeliers hung in rooms where oil paintings in pastoral frames overlook curved leather tub chairs and white-clothed dining tables — a layering of periods that avoids pastiche by keeping the contemporary furniture deliberately restrained. The tower rooms, visible in the images, take an entirely different approach: honey-toned wood-panelled walls, woven leather headboards, polished timber floors, and corner glazing framing views across the Recoleta roofscape. Below the property, the indoor pool is clad entirely in pale limestone, its illuminated translucent ceiling casting a cool blue light that gives the space an almost ceremonial calm. The hotel carries 165 rooms and suites across both structures, making the architecture itself the primary amenity.

"This hotel is absolutely beautiful and it really is a place, the rooms, staff, food and design are all scale with a first class world capital luxury hotel. The only issue we (two couples) had was with the fitness center. It is perfectly equipped but comically small, with space for maybe six people to use it comfortably. Adding to the joke, the fitness center is actually a “club” so while you’re in there, members are showing up with their personal trainers taking up even more space. A beautiful hotel of this scale should have a properly sized fitness facility, especially if it dual-purposed as a membership club."

"This is a first rate hotel, well located, with excellent staff, great restaurants and a magnificent garden that allows one to escape the hustle bustle of the city."

"I spent four nights at Palacio Duhau and, even among Hyatt's generally excellent high-end hotels, this is a winner. The staff is fabulous, and plentiful. I felt there was nothing they would not do to make guests comfortable and welcome—and especially as an older, solo traveler I definitely felt both. The location, in the nice Recoleta neighborhood, is also great and I felt safe walking there even at night. The "Palacio" part of the hotel is a palatial residence from the early 1900s, facing Av. Alvear. and the property runs through the block to the next street. A nice modern 17-story tower, with a small footprint, has another lobby and entrance on Posadas. In between the two buildings is a beautiful terraced garden that is a wonderful, quiet oasis in the city. All three of the restaurants have terraces facing the garden, the food was excellent (though pricey), and the ambience of eating in the garden (during my wintertime at home) was priceless. I chose a room in the Posadas tower because I like modern and had a spacious, corner room overlooking the garden. The room had lots of daylight, an intelligent layout, separate tub and shower, all the conveniences one expects at a good hotel, nice materials and finishes, and something I rarely find in hotels—a very comfortable lounge chair and comfortable desk. (I did not see the rooms in the other building, but expect they are lovely also, as the whole hotel is). Beneath the garden, an art gallery connects the two buildings and there is a large and peaceful pool for swimming under the original building—it was always quiet, and only adults when I swam. My only criticism of the hotel (and it goes for Argentina in general) is that at least one of the garden stairs from the upper building level to the Posadas level—the preferred connection— should have a handrail. Even though the stairs have some lighting, the dark stone is not easy to see and there is nothing to hold on to, for example after it rains or in the dark. (Interior access between the buildings requires a series of elevators and/or stairs). I may not get back to Buenos Aires again, but hope others enjoy this hotel as much as I did."
