PB hotel design editorial

Pressed against the Argentine bank of the Iguazú River within the national park's buffer zone, where morning mist rises off the water and toucans move through the canopy overhead, Awasi Iguazú solves one of eco-hospitality's recurring problems — how to place a hotel in a landscape this charged without diminishing it. The answer, arrived at through a cluster of just fourteen private villas dispersed through native Atlantic Forest, is to make the architecture nearly invisible. Dark-painted corrugated metal rooflines sit below the tree canopy rather than above it, and the cobbled arrival court gives way to vegetation so dense that the buildings dissolve into the forest within twenty metres. Inside, the villas work a different register entirely — whitewashed timber-frame ceilings with exposed A-frame trusses, wide-plank hardwood floors, and an earthy palette of natural linen, terracotta throws, and unfinished wood joinery that keeps the rooms feeling more like carefully considered private houses than hotel accommodation. The main deck, cantilevered over the forest edge on darkened hardwood posts with teak furniture and slatted lanterns, extends the building into the canopy at dusk in a way that collapses the boundary between interior and exterior. Private viewing platforms push even further out over the riverbank — a pair of folding chairs on a timber deck, mist rolling off the Iguazú below, the falls audible but not yet visible — which is precisely the tension the property was designed to hold.

"What an experience this was! Everything was beyond my expectations. My villa was amazing... clean, comfortable, cozy and beautiful! The back terrace was everything I wanted it to be. Surrounded by lush vegetation, it was relaxing to dip into my infinity pool and relax on the lounge chairs hearing birds sing. The customer service was EXCEPTIONAL as was my personal guide, Luis. Everyone was friendly and knew me by name. Everything from my pick up at the airport in Argentina, all of my tours and activities, to the last moment I was dropped off at the airport in Brazil, no detail was overlooked. The food was fantastic too and they catered to my dietary needs with ease. I would definitely return and stay here without hesitation. Iguazu truly is beautiful!"

"One of the best experiences of my life, and we've stayed at lots of luxury resorts, including Explora. Our Awasi experience beat them all. The service was absolutely exceptional. I can't remember any other hotel, except perhaps the Four Seasons Istanbul, that could even come close to the level of professionalism and service that we received at Awasi. The whole team, everyone from Emilio, Julian, Mariano, Pablo, and many others were outstanding. The food is the level of a one-star Michelin restaurant. The excursions are tailor-made and so exclusive that we actually got to experience the Iguazu falls (just my husband and I) and two guides, and nobody else in the entire park. That was surreal. All of our other excursions were also special, including swimming in a hidden waterfall, a walk in the rainforest followed by a 3 course picnic by the stream. The resort is a little dated but the overall care and experience the team provides more than makes up for it. We loved our stay and look forward to going to another Awasi soon!"

"As many people have mentioned, the service and experience at this hotel is top notch. Small boutique hotel where staff greet you by name, service is excellent and the self contained cabins with the plunge pools are decadent. Dinners were delicious although after a full day of guiding, we would have loved to have an early dinner (dinner not available until 7pm, although you can order snacks at any time) Each cabin is assigned a guide (Guille was excellent) and your experiences are customized based on your interests. We spent a full day eco trekking (road very bumpy) which included a barbecue lunch. And the following day a trip to the falls. What really made that special was early access to the Devil’s throat via train before others arrived. We are on our way to two other Awasi properties. So I will provide my reviews on those as well."

"Having just left the EOLO hotel in Calafate, I didn’t think we would find another place in Argentina that came close. The Awasi does. The rooms are very spacious, well designed and incredibly comfortable. Each with its own private mini pool. The main hotel and restaurant are tasteful and spacious. The restaurant is outstanding the food, the wine and the staff. I think the Sommelier ranks as one of the best I have come across anywhere in the world. The activities are great. We went to the Argentinian side of the falls which are spectacular. One of the big benefits of staying at the Awasi is that you get to take the railway to the main falls half an hour before anyone else so you avoid the crowds. We were put off going to the Brazilian side because of the crowds and the onerous customs process. Instead we went for a hike in the Awasi’s private jungle reserve and had a great lunch by the river. We were lucky to have an outstanding guide, Daniella, who looked after us throughout our stay. I could not recommend her more highly."
