PB hotel design editorial

Pressed into the vineyard rows of Luján de Cuyo at the foot of the Andes, where the high-altitude light of Mendoza turns everything amber by late afternoon, Cavas Wine Lodge was conceived as architecture that belongs entirely to its agricultural ground. The fourteen private casitas — low-slung adobe structures with thick rammed-earth walls, curved parapet tops, and flat rooflines planted with native grasses — seem to rise from the soil rather than sit on it, their warm ochre render drawn directly from the local building tradition of the cuyo region. Each unit is sited within the vines themselves, with private plunge pools oriented toward the snow-capped cordillera. Inside, the rooms carry the same logic of material restraint pushed against vivid color. Barrel-vaulted ceilings in smooth plaster arch over polished concrete floors softened by cowhide rugs, while furnishings introduce sharp chromatic interruptions — crimson velvet ottomans, a grass-green armchair, a headboard woven from striped Andean textile — against walls the color of unbleached linen. The main lodge, housed in a converted colonial-style bodega building, anchors the public spaces with wood-framed French doors opening to a colonnaded terrace, a lobby furnished with a low platform daybed beneath a sculptural chandelier of twisted grapevine, and a dining room where sage-green drapes frame views into the surrounding canopy. The whole property holds fewer than twenty keys, a density that keeps the relationship between guest and landscape unusually direct.

"I've waited a couple of weeks to collect my thoughts on the incredible experience I had at Awasi Mendoza. This was such a remarkable trip! Before booking, I was deciding between Awasi, The Vines, and Chozos. I was going through a bit of a life transition, and this solo trip to Argentina was a gift to myself. I wanted the Mendoza portion of my journey to be something special. I ultimately chose Awasi because I was looking for a highly curated experience that would help me truly appreciate everything the Mendoza region has to offer. I also opted for their “fully hosted” package, and while I wasn’t sure at first whether it would feel worth it as a solo traveler, I can confidently say I was very glad I splurged. It elevated my entire stay. One of the highlights of the fully hosted experience is having a dedicated travel planner who helped build an itinerary tailored to my interests and coordinated all of the reservations. Because Awasi (formerly Cavas Wine Lodge) has strong relationships with wineries and restaurants throughout the region, they were able to secure tastings at all of my preferred wineries (even though I planned this trip only about two weeks before I arrived). Every experience was private and accompanied by a guide/driver, which made the experience feel very personal and effortless. Some of the standout activities that they coordinated for me included: - Private tastings at top wineries in the Lujan de Cuyo and Uco Valley regions with one-on-one guides from sommeliers and wine experts (perfect for someone like me who asks a lot of questions!) along with lunches at Michelin-starred wineries/restaurants - A hike to Quebrada del Cóndor - A horseback ride through the Awasi vineyards upon arrival, which helped introduce me to the region’s agriculture and history - A wonderful on-site cooking class with Chef Vicky, who helped me perfect my empanada-folding skills - A visit to Laur for an olive oil and vinegar tour and tasting (not to be missed) - A last-minute deep-tissue massage at the spa, seamlessly arranged by the team I won't go too much into the details of the property itself but it is nothing short of magical. The villas, grounds, and shared spaces are incredibly luxurious and impeccably maintained. I could stay here and never leave the grounds. The food was another major standout. Many visitors to Mendoza are eager to dine at the region’s Michelin-starred restaurants. My recommendation would be to schedule them for lunch and enjoy Awasi’s restaurant for dinner. Each dinner offers both a set menu and a multi-course tasting menu that changes nightly highlighting what is fresh/seasonal, and central to Mendocino cuisine. What made the meals even more special was the staff’s deep knowledge of the food they served. The servers were all able to answer my questions as if they were the chefs who crafted the recipes and prepared the food themselves. The sommeliers, Frederico and Julian, were also incredibly present and generous. Frederico has a world of experience in the wine industry. And you can tell Julian finds much joy in the work that he does and was excited to talk wine. He even offered off-menu samples simply out of excitement to share. The service at Awasi far exceeded even the high expectations that come with a property of this caliber. Everyone was warm, friendly, and attentive without ever feeling overbearing or inauthentic. I would return to Awasi simply to be around these people again. A huge thank you to Luana, Vicky, Kevin, Paloma, Paula, Costanza, and Sofia for making my stay so special. Thank you as well to the management team, including Victoria and Veronica, for their exceptional hospitality. And finally, a huge hug and heartfelt thanks to Yesica, my guide throughout the trip. She was so knowledgeable, kind, and wonderful company each day. Awasi Mendoza is a deeply personal, beautifully curated experience...not just a luxury resort. For anyone looking for something intimate, restorative, and unforgettable in Mendoza, I cannot recommend Awasi highly enough."

"My husband said that if he had one week to live this is where he’d choose to spend it - which hopefully tells you everything! Beautiful, great food and amazing staff."
