PB hotel design editorial

Few building types carry the weight of Argentine national identity quite like the estancia, and the one that houses La Bamba de Areco — a colonial-era cattle ranch on the pampa outside San Antonio de Areco, the heartland of gaucho culture — wears that history with particular ease. The terracotta-washed walls, arched colonnades, and single-storey spread visible in the images follow the unhurried horizontal logic of nineteenth-century rural construction, the whole compound sitting low against a landscape of ancient ceibo and eucalyptus trees whose canopies dwarf the building entirely. The property has been in the same family for generations and converted into a small hotel of fifteen rooms without surrendering the atmosphere of a working estancia — horses still graze the grounds, and a horse-drawn carriage in period livery remains part of daily life here. The interiors maintain the same restraint. Dark-stained timber four-poster beds with turned columns anchor rooms furnished in tobacco and cream — linen drapes, woven wool throws, colonial-era chests of drawers, and framed equestrian photography that acknowledges the ranch's polo heritage without becoming decorative noise. Original fireplaces are set directly into the whitewashed walls, and French shutters in grey-green open onto private terraces facing the lawn. The bar and dining room preserve exposed brick and rough stone in their original state, candlelit at night against a large-scale equine artwork. The pool terrace, framed by mature cedars and laid in silvered hardwood decking, completes a property whose confidence comes entirely from not needing to announce itself.

"We spent one wonderful night at La Ramba de Areco, and it was a highlight of our time in Argentina. From the moment we arrived, the staff was outstanding — warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. The service felt personal without ever being intrusive, and everyone went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable and relaxed. Lucila, Angie and Francisco were standouts but all of the staff made us feel at home. The setting is beautiful and peaceful, with that classic countryside charm that makes you immediately slow down and unwind. Our horseback riding experience was memorable — well organized, scenic, and perfectly suited to enjoying the landscape at an easy, enjoyable pace. The massages were equally excellent and a perfect complement to the outdoor activities. The food deserves special mention. Every meal was thoughtfully prepared, generous, and delicious — refined but still true to the local flavors and spirit of the region. The communal table at dinner was also fun - with good Argentinian wines to accompany it. Even in just one night, La Ramba de Areco delivered a complete, restorative estancia experience. We left wishing we had stayed longer."

"La Bamba Estancia was supposed to be an oasis of quiet in a busy holiday. Sadly this Estancia seems to be more focussed on it’s day guests. Every day our peace was disturbed by visitors experiencing a ranch - lunch, the ‘horse whisperer’ and a chance to ride a horse. To make matters worse the guests were bumped from their allotted times to accommodate the visitors who also took up positions round and in the pool leaving no space for residents. There was also supposed to be a cooking class on making empanadas but we were not allowed to do this as the kitchen was too busy cooking for the visitors. On our last day (Saturday) they were setting up for a ‘Gaucho  Show’. On talking to a member of staff I got the impression that this was a weekly event where they took up to an extra thirty people who were bussed in. The staff however were unfailingly polite and helpful and not to be blamed. The owner needs to look at the MO and decide whether they are a quiet retreat or a day trip experience."

"A lovely estancia with luxurious accommodation and food. Very friendly and helpful staff. Several different activities on offer, swimming in the unheated outdoor pool, too cold when we were there, carriage rides, horse riding around the parkland. polo grounds and bikes are also available. There are sometimes small groups of day visitors with entertainment laid on from them. A lovely place to relax and recover from a long haul flight. A 20 minute drive from the famous Gaucho town of San Antonio De Areco, well worth a visit."

"One of a kind establishment where you can have horse back riding, dinner parties and asado bbq in one place. Staff is incredibly warm and kind (and very English friendly). It’s quiet and peaceful out there full of nature. Getting there is a bit of a trek including a poorly paved road but once there you are in a different world You do share meals with other guests unless you opt out but that is half of the fun as you share lunch, pre dinner drinks, and dinner all at set times as well as tea and breakfast if you happen to be there at same time. Be prepared for bugs though this being nature but I would come back!"

"You arrive down an unpaved road to the most immaculate, stunning estancia an hour and a half outside BA. We had had a full on trip around Argentina and our stay here was a tonic to end our holiday with. I knew it was going to be memorable as we were met on arrival by a gaucho on horseback to escort us down the drive! The grounds are beautiful and calming and the attention we received from the staff was second to none. We loved the horse riding (thank you to Juan Marten and Eduado) and the empanada cooking lesson (thank you Lolo) and every meal was delicious. Not knowing anything about Polo, it was fascinating watching a couple of games and exploring the wonderful stables. The horses are so well looked after and we never tired of watching them be exercised and cared for. We met like minded travellers and in a dinner party atmosphere, they quickly became friends from all round the world. We loved that! Thank you to lovely Lulli, Daniel, Millie, Delfi, Andrea, Fran and all the rest of you whose names I am not sure of. I felt a bit tearful as we were waved off. You must go! What a unique experience and now back in the UK, it feels like a dream."
