PB hotel design editorial

Curving along the ridgeline of Mount Lofty Estate above Crafers, where the Adelaide Hills drop away toward Piccadilly Valley in a sweep of eucalypt and farmland, four low-rise buildings clad in Australian Spotted Gum and locally quarried Basket Range sandstone announce themselves as something built for exactly this place. David Frazer's architecture for Sequoia Lodge, which opened in 2019, works the escarpment rather than sitting above it — the buildings follow the contour of the ridge so that each of the fourteen suites captures a 180-degree panorama without any suite looking into another. Georgie Shepherd's interiors carry the material logic of the exterior inward. Floor-to-ceiling black-framed glazing floods the split-level suites with morning light, the rough-coursed sandstone fireplace chimneys rising through double-height volumes that feel genuinely domestic in scale. Warm-toned spotted gum millwork lines every wall, built-in shelving and cabinetry fitted flush alongside the stone chimney breast so that the hearth becomes the spatial centre of each 75-square-metre room. Aboriginal dot paintings in ochres and deep umber hang above the beds, grounding the palette in country rather than imported reference. In the restaurant, terracotta-upholstered armchairs pull up to marble-topped tables before floor-to-ceiling glass that frames the valley canopy like a held breath — the landscape always present, always the point.

"Sequoia is in a beautiful setting with sweeping views of the Adelaide Hills. We loved every minute of our 3-night stay there. Plenty of interesting things to do (don’t miss the bee experience) and staff are there to offer suggestions and ensure that the logistics around your activities are seamless. Breakfast and dinner experiences were beyond our expectations. Produce was always fresh and beautifully presented. I’ve never tasted such good honey (from their own bees). I can only assume they look after their bees as well as they look after their guests, and happy bees produce great honey. The service at Sequoia was outstanding. We especially appreciated their giving us a lift to a nearby winery and also dropping us off at the airport (when our pre-booked taxi failed to arrive). Thank you."

"My husband and I stayed at Sequoia for three nights. It was a wonderful stay and we loved everything about it. There are lots of experiences included and we got to try them all because we stayed for three nights. Beekeeping, cocktail making class, local cheese and wine, yoga, mineral hot pools, sauna and a tour of Mount Lofty house were all great experiences We also paid extra to visit a local truffle farm which was amazing. The truffle dog discovered lots of truffles which we tasted back at the lodge with a glass of local sparkling The rooms are large, very comfortable and have beautiful views. The large bath and fabulous shower made for an indulgent experience. Jurlique toiletries were a nice local touch Breakfast was delicious and started with a beautiful tasting board with wellness shots, granola, fruit and croissants then we chose hot dishes as well. We ate dinner one night in the lodge, had room service another night and ate at Crafers hotel too All the staff were very friendly and couldn’t do enough to please. Special mentions to Megan and Agnes for looking after us. We would love to return to Sequoia."
