PB hotel design editorial

Perched above the escarpment edge at Blackheath, where the Blue Mountains plateau breaks away into a vast theatre of sandstone cliffs and eucalypt forest, the Chalets at Blackheath arranged its pavilion structures low among the scrub so that the landscape, not the architecture, holds the dominant note. The aerial view confirms the logic: a loose scatter of dark-roofed cabins threaded through recovering bushland, the Grose Valley unfolding beyond in layers of blue-hazed ridge and canyon. Each chalet is clad in vertical corrugated steel and warm timber weatherboards beneath a shallow skillion roof, the generous glazing framed in honey-coloured hardwood and shaded by horizontal timber louvres — a vocabulary drawn from Australian rural vernacular but executed with contemporary precision. Inside, the material palette keeps faith with the surrounding geology. Dry-stacked fieldstone walls anchor the freestanding black wood-burning stoves, the stone's warm ochres and greys echoing the sandstone country visible through floor-to-ceiling windows. Blonde oak joinery lines the kitchenette runs, dark stone benchtops providing contrast, while wide-board timber flooring and loosely woven wool rugs soften the acoustic. The communal lodge takes a different register — a gabled volume with exposed recycled brick walls, a long live-edge dining table beneath clustered paper globe pendants, and a lounge anchored by blush bouclé armchairs arranged around a stone fireplace. The furniture throughout carries a mid-century inflection, shaped chairs on splayed timber legs sitting comfortably against the handmade quality of the stone and brick.

"Truly an amazing property that we'd highly recommend. We will fly the 7,000+ miles to do it again. The simple elegance of The Chalets At Blackheath and attentiveness of the team is 5 star experience. Thank you Jess and Sean for making us feel like family."

"I have just concluded a wonderful family trip to the Blue Mountains, and our stay at the chalet in Blackheath was truly exceptional. The chalet was beautifully designed, with spacious, comfortable rooms and excellent facilities that made our stay both relaxing and memorable. Surrounded by lush greenery, it was the perfect retreat for nature lovers. As an avid birdwatcher, I was especially delighted to spot four lifer species during my stay, including the magnificent Gang-gang Cockatoo—a highlight of the trip. A special mention goes to Shawn, who was an outstanding host. He was warm, welcoming, incredibly helpful, and went out of his way to ensure we had a comfortable and enjoyable stay. Overall, this was money very well spent. I would highly recommend this chalet to anyone visiting the Blue Mountains, whether you’re looking for a peaceful family getaway, a nature retreat, or simply a relaxing escape. We would be more than happy to stay here again."

"We stayed at The Chalets, Blackheath for two nights to celebrate my birthday and surprise engagement weekend, and it was the most amazing and special experience. From the moment we arrived, we felt completely immersed in the beauty and tranquillity of the location. The setting is absolutely stunning — peaceful, private, and exclusive, making it the perfect place to slow down and celebrate such a meaningful occasion. The chalet itself was beautiful, with so much charm and a gorgeous fireplace that made our stay feel incredibly cosy and romantic. Every detail made it feel like a truly special escape. A huge thank you to Sean and Jess, who looked after us so wonderfully. They were warm, welcoming, and attentive, making us feel so cared for throughout our stay. We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect place to celebrate such a memorable weekend. We left feeling relaxed, grateful, and already hoping to return. Highly recommend The Chalets for anyone looking for a beautiful and unforgettable getaway."

"One of the absolute best stays ever. The folks who tend to the chalets really deeply care about the people who stay there. Some of the kindest human beings we have ever met! If you want to relax and just be well taken care of I highly suggest paying them a visit. The seclusion, the privacy and the design, all top notch!"

"We felt incredibly relaxed and immersed in nature. The service was second to none, and we would highly recommend it to everyone. The BBQ was delicious—we enjoyed it almost every night. Jack and Kesh were great, very helpful and accommodating. The in-room massage by Bianca was one of the best I’ve ever had. We went on the Breakfast with Kangaroos tour with Eric, who was extremely knowledgeable and took us to lesser-known spots, guiding us through valleys that felt even more magical than the main tourist areas. Overall, a very relaxed staycation, that is not too far out of Sydney, albeit feels other worldly!"
