PB hotel design editorial

Perched above the escarpment edge at Blackheath, where the Blue Mountains plateau breaks away into a vast theatre of sandstone cliffs and eucalypt forest, the Chalets at Blackheath arranged its pavilion structures low among the scrub so that the landscape, not the architecture, holds the dominant note. The aerial view confirms the logic: a loose scatter of dark-roofed cabins threaded through recovering bushland, the Grose Valley unfolding beyond in layers of blue-hazed ridge and canyon. Each chalet is clad in vertical corrugated steel and warm timber weatherboards beneath a shallow skillion roof, the generous glazing framed in honey-coloured hardwood and shaded by horizontal timber louvres — a vocabulary drawn from Australian rural vernacular but executed with contemporary precision. Inside, the material palette keeps faith with the surrounding geology. Dry-stacked fieldstone walls anchor the freestanding black wood-burning stoves, the stone's warm ochres and greys echoing the sandstone country visible through floor-to-ceiling windows. Blonde oak joinery lines the kitchenette runs, dark stone benchtops providing contrast, while wide-board timber flooring and loosely woven wool rugs soften the acoustic. The communal lodge takes a different register — a gabled volume with exposed recycled brick walls, a long live-edge dining table beneath clustered paper globe pendants, and a lounge anchored by blush bouclé armchairs arranged around a stone fireplace. The furniture throughout carries a mid-century inflection, shaped chairs on splayed timber legs sitting comfortably against the handmade quality of the stone and brick.

"We felt incredibly relaxed and immersed in nature. The service was second to none, and we would highly recommend it to everyone. The BBQ was delicious—we enjoyed it almost every night. Jack and Kesh were great, very helpful and accommodating. The in-room massage by Bianca was one of the best I’ve ever had. We went on the Breakfast with Kangaroos tour with Eric, who was extremely knowledgeable and took us to lesser-known spots, guiding us through valleys that felt even more magical than the main tourist areas. Overall, a very relaxed staycation, that is not too far out of Sydney, albeit feels other worldly!"

"We had an exceptional stay at Chalets at Blackheath. The property sits right on the edge of the Blue Mountains, offering a rare combination of seclusion, comfort, and natural beauty. Our chalet was stunning — floor‑to‑ceiling windows, a cozy fireplace, and a luxurious soaking tub that made the space feel like a private retreat. Breakfast each morning was a highlight: fresh, healthy, and delicious, with thoughtful touches that made it feel special rather than routine. The staff (thank you Jack and Kesha) were outstanding. Warm, attentive, and genuinely invested in making our stay memorable. Their hospitality elevated the entire experience. A perfect choice for anyone seeking a luxurious, romantic escape in the Blue Mountains."

"We had an amazing four-night stay at the Chalets at Blackheath. With only four chalets, it feels really intimate and peaceful, with each one set among the bushland and connected by easy walking paths and a few lovely shared spaces. The location is fantastic—within walking distance of the Grand Canyon and surrounded by some of the best walking tracks in the Blue Mountains. It’s the perfect mix of getting out into nature in the morning and then coming back to relax and unwind for the rest of the day. We also really enjoyed the little shared touches, like breakfast in the library where you can chat with other guests, and marshmallows around the fire pit in the afternoon. But it’s just as easy to switch off completely and enjoy the quiet if that’s what you’re after. A big thank you to Keshia, Jack and Sean, who made the stay extra special. They were warm, knowledgeable, and always happy to help—whether it was local tips, putting together a cheese platter, or organising a massage. Such a great balance of comfort, nature and genuine hospitality—highly recommend."

"Highly recommended. The chalets are beautiful and have all the comforts you expect from a high-end place. Very unique experience and surrounded by a beautiful natural private setting. The staff is phenomenal. We are so thankful to Sean, Keshia, and Angela for taking such good care of us and providing invaluable advice and recommendations. Hiking trails right outside the complex. The only drawback is no restaurant. They provide a simple but tasty breakfast but you are on your own for lunch and dinner so plan ahead. The chalet is equipped with a small functional kitchen and an outside grill if you rather cook. The town is near by with several restaurants but most close between 3 and 5. We recommend having a car so you can take advantage of the other nearby towns like Katumba and Leura which also offer great hiking trails and to move around between the Chalet and town."
