PB hotel design editorial

Brutalist massing rendered in warm Queensland sandstone is not an obvious formula for hospitality, yet it is precisely the tension that Richards and Spence resolved when they designed The Calile Hotel for Brisbane's James Street precinct, which opened in 2018. The eight-storey building — its street-level arcade of generous rendered arches giving way to a grid of deep-set concrete fins and bronze-tinted glazing above — carries the formal weight of late modernism without the coldness that usually accompanies it. Richards and Spence drew the facade from a Mediterranean and North African register, the same sources that have always suited Queensland's subtropical light, and the golden hour photographs of the exterior confirm how precisely the palette was calibrated: the stone glows rather than bleaches. Inside, the 175 rooms were conceived by the same practice, each one a cave of pale blush plaster shaped by barrel-vaulted ceilings that fold down around the bed in a continuous plastered arch — an unmistakably tactile gesture that gives every room the atmosphere of a carved grotto rather than a hotel box. Cork-finish stone tiles line the lower walls and floors, brass tapware rises from a circular freestanding bath set on a terracotta-tiled plinth, and arched joinery niches frame arched windows beyond. The pool terrace, shaded by planted pergolas and surrounded by pale limestone paving, sage-green sun loungers, and cascading tropical planting, extends the sandy courtyard mood that makes this building feel closer to a Moroccan riad transplanted to subtropical Australia than anything the city had seen before.

"Everything is thought of for you at this hotel. You can simply relax by the pool and order your drinks and food to your lounger or you can get out there and shop until you drop. Beautiful fashion boutiques nearby, cafes and restaurants with yummy offerings and a market to buy fresh produce if you prefer. The Calile does it all so well starting with your front desk experience and ending with the refreshing bottle of water offered as you depart. The rooms are roomy and the marble to die for. There are black out blinds if you wish to sleep in but we preferred to get out there early and enjoy a quiet breakfast by the pool before the rush started. It is our favourite place to stay in Brisbane."

"We’ve stayed at the Calile a few times now, both as a couple and with family, and it’s always a great experience. You can drop your bags and settle in for a few days without needing to leave the precinct, with some of the best restaurants and shopping right at your doorstep."

"Generally we had a pleasant stay and the hotel overall is lovely aesthetically. Something to mention, would be no suana/steam room in the “Wellness Centre”. I was very surprised. We were disappointed with the inconsistent pricing. The standard room was advertised for $2500 six days prior, I had called to ask staff is this was correct. The staff member advised me they do not offer a quote for one night stays over the weekends…. (This is not true, we have only ever stayed on weekends for one night & we did again recently 27th Feb). I ended the call & watched the price drop dramatically over the six days to approximately $600. This initial call and pricing felt excessive! Service during our stay was average and did not align with the expected “Top 50 worldwide” standard. In particular, the cleanliness in the restaurant was concerning. Two separate tables, guests were filming cockroaches on tables, which impacted the dining experience. Additionally, whilst paying extra for still water (as expected) we had to request multiple times for top ups. For a premium offering, we expected a more attentive seamless level of service. While the hotel has many positive attributes, improvements in accurate service consistency and restaurant hygiene would enhance the overall guest enjoyment."

"We took a rare weekend away without the kids to enjoy some time together and the Calile provided us with the perfect experience. The rooms are wonderfully designed with style and comfort in mind and the Pool side was the place to unwind and enjoy delicious dining & cocktails together. thank you for a fantastic weekend!"

"Spent two nights at the Calile over a weekend. We were in Brisbane to see a show and unfortunately the weather was wet all weekend, so we didn’t really have a chance to use any outdoor areas. However, loved our room and the vibe of the hotel. Special mention to Lucas, one of the concierges who was a great help. The Calile will now become our go to place to stay when next in Brisbane."
