PB hotel design editorial

Built in 1938 as the headquarters of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons' Queensland branch, the terracotta-brick Georgian Revival building on Wickham Terrace in Brisbane's Spring Hill carries its institutional origins with quiet authority — a deep dentil cornice, white-painted balustrades at rooftop level, and arched ground-floor windows that give the facade a civic gravity no amount of hospitality branding can entirely domesticate. Ovolo Hotels converted the five-storey property into The Inchcolm by Ovolo, preserving the original wainscoting and panelled walls that now anchor an interior scheme calibrated somewhere between heritage reverence and deliberate irreverence — white dado rails and coffered plasterwork set against deep teal and forest green paint, with four-poster beds in dark walnut veneer and velvet cushions in mauve and silver lending the rooms the atmosphere of a well-dressed English club that has stopped taking itself too seriously. The food and beverage spaces push that tension further. The restaurant sets bentwood Thonet chairs around white Carrara marble tops beneath pendant clusters and dramatic onyx-veined stone cladding, a large pop-art canvas providing the room's emotional punctuation. The bar pulls even harder in the opposite direction — black-painted panelling and the original arched windows are entirely overwhelmed by ceiling-to-floor botanical wallpaper from what appears to be a Timorous Beasties or similar maximalist print house, the whole room anchored by a curved black marble counter with a hammered brass arch backdrop. Thirty-eight rooms across the building make this one of Brisbane's more characterful small hotels.

About

Over a century young, this Neo-Georgian belle shines with original charm and historical character, as if to say, take a leaf out of my book: stay true to yourself, an original is worth more than a copy. It’s no wonder, really, that this heritage-listed hotel remains a much-loved Brisbane landmark. Home to 50 generous guest rooms, each dressed in their traditional best, complete with modern amenities and city views; places to politely excuse yourself to for rest and restoration. "During our just over a week's stay in Sydney, we moved between three neighborhoods and three different hotels. The first was a stay at the hotel at the Sydney Taronga Zoo. Then we moved to the downtown Sydney commercial and tourist area, and stayed at the Grace, where we could walk to shops and sightseeing spots. Our last couple of nights were spent at the Inchcolm Hotel, which was very enjoyable. Upon arrival, our very helpful, friendly desk clerk told us that we had been upgraded! What a surprise! The upgrade turned out to be a large room on the top floor with a main-floor living room area, a large bedroom and bathroom up a flight of stairs. The large windows provided a great view and lots of daylight. Everything was super clean and comfortable. On the first evening, after visiting the art museums, we walked around the hotel neighborhood and discovered an enjoyable restaurant in Fish Lane -- a small group of restaurants and shops. For happy hour, the hotel treated us to its signature margaritas, which was a nice touch. I chose the "Olde Pal". We would stay at this hotel again."

"First impressions of this hotel were good, but unfortunately that’s where the positives ended. After returning from a concert we went back to our room expecting to relax and watch some TV before checkout the next day. The hotel advertises Apple TV and streaming services, however neither were available in our room. When we went downstairs to ask about it, we were told “Oh yes, we’ve been taking them out.” When we then asked about the streaming services not working, the response was that it “hadn’t been working but a ticket had been raised and resolved.” No apology, no effort to help – just a blank response and a promise to “leave a note for management.” When we returned upstairs, our key cards no longer worked and we were locked out of the room. Back downstairs again we went, only to be greeted with a suggestion that maybe the key had been near our phone – implying it was somehow our fault. Again, no apology. Once we finally got back into the room we planned to order room service, but that was also unavailable. To make matters worse, the toilet ran all night, the wet bar tap dripped constantly, there were cracks in the tiles, visible water damage around the windowsill, cornice and even the light fittings above the bed. At checkout we handed in the keys and weren’t even asked how our stay was. No “thanks for staying,” no acknowledgement at all. Overall, this was a very disappointing experience with poor customer service and clear maintenance issues. Spend your money elsewhere. If zero stars were an option, that’s what this would receive."

"The first room had a bathroom sink that did not work . The second a bedside light not working and the sink plug ( built in) was not functioning . Clean . The food in the restaurant/ cafe is without imagination and the menu is quite limited. We chose elsewhere the second night . The old charm of this place is rather spoilt by lack of substance . I did try to get some mail delivered to me here, however I never received a reply from management ."

"Brodi, the front office manager is a super star! She made such a great impression from the get go, by coming out and meeting me at my car to help me with my bags and check-in, after I gave a quick call from the loading zone not sure what to do next. She also gave me a heritage room with a bath, which I wasn't aware existed, but was sooo grateful for after a full day of chores and running around in the QLD heat! Unfortunately there's no longer any valet parking, which I was after due to time constraints, but the parking station is so close it wasn't an issue. My bags had been taken to my room by the time I came back, and I was able to get that bath running, and add bath salts from the room to make the soak the best I've had in a while! Another bonus was the L.U.E brand of bath/shower gel, shampoo and conditioner, which I've never tried before, but the next day put in an order online for some - beautiful stuff! Bed was super comfortable, but it was a little noisy outside being a Friday night, and the nearby trains letting their whistle sound when they were leaving the station. I eventually got used to it and got to sleep. The hotel has fruit and little muffins in the lobby to avail yourself of when passing through, though be aware, there are no gluten free muffins. The place has a very homey feel that makes you feel welcome and relaxed from the start to the finish:)"

"We had a confirmed reservation here for three nights made six months ago. Upon early morning 8:00 am arrival after flying 20 hours to get here they informed us our confirmed reservation was cancelled and the moved us to a non boutique hotel nearby. That hotel then informed us they only had room for us for one night. After two unpleasant hours, It was finally resolved but we are not at the Inchcolm and experienced a very disheartening arrival to Brisbane. I don’t think the Inchcolm is well managed, professional, reputable or honest. I advise you to go elsewhere. Life is too short to support their egregious behavior and tactics."
