PB hotel design editorial

Richard Johnson — the Australian painter whose bold, landscape-derived abstractions anchor the Art Series Hotels concept — gives this Brisbane property both its name and its curatorial spine. The Johnson sits in Spring Hill, the dense inner-city suburb that rises sharply above the CBD, in a twelve-storey tower whose white rendered facade and rhythmic balcony grid carry the clean, horizontal geometry of mid-century Australian modernism updated for contemporary expectations. The ground-level entry, clad in dark-framed glazing set beneath a warm timber soffit, announces a lobby where cracked terrazzo flooring and slatted timber ceiling baffles establish a material register that is relaxed without being casual — the kind of considered restraint that characterises the broader Art Series approach. Rooms are fitted in pale oak millwork with navy and charcoal upholstery punctuated by terracotta and ochre cushions, Johnson's prints hung in white frames against white walls where the colour does the talking. The upper-floor suites open onto full-width glass sliders with Brisbane CBD views to the east, while the mid-rise pool deck — a long lap pool set beneath a deep pergola of heavy timber battens — catches the northern light over Spring Hill's intact canopy of Jacaranda and fig. Throughout, the art collection is treated as architectural furniture rather than decoration: large-format canvases positioned so they're encountered at corridor turns and room thresholds, pulling Johnson's ochre-and-cadmium landscape palette through spaces that might otherwise read as straightforwardly contemporary.

"I found the room and staff delightful and helpful. I would definitely choose to stay there again and recommend the hotel to my friends and family"

"This is the first time I attended an Accor hotel in which a couple of Reception Team Members wore Accor T-Shirts. This was such a welcoming gesture, considering that not all Accor hotels are consistent with Accor familiarity. The Johnson stood out immediately, and Congratulations for this. Service at The Johnson exceeded my expectations, keeping in mind The Johnson is more of an apartment-style accommodation with fewer facilities than other Accor hotels. For me, it is the distinguished hospitality of Victor, Chirayu, Celline and Glyza (all pictured) who made The Johnson stay incredibly comfortable with a feeling of we being at home. Their friendly approach, attention to details and super-quick follow-through are to congratulated. Housekeeping team members are also super pro-active. I met Rian and Yama (pictured), and they too came across as warm and approachable."

"I am a platinum Accor member who, with my wife, has stayed at the Johnson hotel in Brisbane over many years, for business and recreationally, including every Christmas. Sometimes my wife needs to check in before my arrival, and there has never previously been a problem. I made a booking six weeks ago for a three night stay, telling them my ( named) wife would be checking in as I would not be arriving until much later. Before arrival, they sent an email telling us that the pool ( ( the hotels biggest drawcard for us) would be closed for maintenance throughout our stay. We were thinking they might offer some compensation for this, such as free parking. It is difficult to describe my surprise and dismay when my distressed, shocked wife rang me at our residence three hours away, from reception to say she was not allowed to check in. I spoke on phone to ? Manager..I asked the receptionist if I could please speak to the manager and she said she was the manager, but then frequently went off to speak to someone else, making sure my wife who was right there at reception, could not hear. No amount of reminding of our loyalty to the Johnson, and reminders that I had told them on booking six weeks before, that my wife would be checking in, and informing them of how refusal would mean my wife would have to drive three hours home and miss the start of a conference, dissuaded them from cheerily stating that my telling them six weeks before that my wife would be checking in was “ only a request” ( to which they had clearly felt no obligation to respond until checkin) and cheerily offering to cancel and refund our stay as though that would be a satisfactory resolution! We knew that they could resell our room at more than twice the price we had paid in advance. I have never in fifty years of travel, ever experienced such shock and dismay as result of careless dismissal by hotel management. I do not usually write reviews if they are going to be negative, but have no choice on this occasion, such is my dismay and anger at their humiliating treatment of myself and my wife. Accor is clearly operating outside of Australian rules of civility, and Australian standards of maintenance. Their front staff on this occasion acted as automatons in service to presumably threatening overlords ( ie threatening their jobs) and were unable to give any sensible, humane resolution to a situation where loyal customers in good faith had made a booking and were upfront about checking arrangements, and were going to have to drive an extra six hours when not allowed to check in on basis of failure of Accor to clearly alert customers that their spouses can under no circumstances check in first to hotel. This experience has made us realise we had been overlooking the severe decline in overall condition of the hotel and its amenity, over the past years. We won’t be staying at the Johnson again until there is new management. I would warn anybody thinking of becoming Accor plus member, not to!"

"On the positive side, the hotel was modern and clean and the staff were friendly and helpful. The room (suite) was very spacious and well appointed. Although located on the CBD fringe, there was a convenient free city loop bus stop just across the road and a few nice eateries nearby. However, the overall review was dragged down by several issues that were not major, but still annoying enough to rate a mention. The most annoying was the TV placement that was to the side of the bed due to the patio doors being in front of the bed. This made viewing quite uncomfortable. Other issues included yet another hotel shower that leaks all over the bathroom floor, a leaking vanity basin plug, a leaking coffee machine (that was fixed promptly), face washers that were not replenished every day and inefficient window noise insulation. Car park spaces were also incredibly tight. Overall, it was a nice stay, but would have been considerably better without these issues."
