PB hotel design editorial

Fluid curves define the base of the tower at North Quay where W Brisbane, which opened in 2018, established the brand's first Australian outpost within a 34-storey mixed-use development designed by Cox Architecture. The undulating podium — its stacked balconies bending in continuous waves of glass and warm-toned timber screening — sits against the Brisbane River with a self-assurance that sets it apart from the city's more conservative commercial towers. Interiors were handled by Nic Graham & Associates, who built the concept around Queensland's natural landscape translated through an unapologetically pop sensibility: think flora and fauna cushions in neon marquee lettering, acid-green abstract rugs that suggest aerial views of subtropical canopy, and a mirrored ceiling in the upper suites that doubles the city lights spread below the floor-to-ceiling glazing. The 312 rooms carry the brand's characteristic visual intensity without tipping into incoherence — zebra-pattern custom carpets, turquoise drum-shaped minibars, and dotted-wave wall murals give each space a layered energy that stops short of chaos. The WET deck pool is where the property makes its boldest statement: bold black-and-white op-art geometry wraps every surface from column bases to ceiling canopy, the graphic pattern borrowed from the tradition of dazzle camouflage and pushed into something closer to a Bridget Riley installation. From the adjacent outdoor terrace bar, the river bends toward South Bank's Ferris wheel and the QPAC arts precinct, offering a panorama that gives the hotel's exuberance genuine geographic grounding.

"Had a really enjoyable stay at W Brisbane. The hotel has a great modern feel and is well located along the river, making it easy to get around the city. The room was clean, stylish, and very comfortable with great amenities, perfect to unwind after a busy day. The overall atmosphere felt relaxed but still premium. Also a great option for a business trip, with everything running smoothly and efficiently throughout the stay. Staff were friendly, efficient and helpful, which made the experience even better. Would definitely stay again."

"They treated my 8year old so well - they asked what he likes and I told them Panthers (hence being there for the big Broncos game) and they did balloons for the room in those colours. Fantastic welcoming service. Also Klaus the German tech guy Thor fixed our TV was so kind."

"Recently stayed for 4 nights for work. I was on the 27th floor. Pros: great location, room spacious, bed comfortable, efficient and good quality room service (although expensive - that is to be expected I guess), buffet breakfast excellent - the live omelette station and barista coffee was my favourite. Every member of staff was exceptional, friendly, nothing was too much trouble. Neutral: the pool area is small and underwhelming. It’s doesn’t take advantage of the amazing location overlooking the Brisbane river. Cons: not enough lifts for such a large hotel. I found myself leaving extra early or loitering around to avoid queues for the lifts. Corridors are very dark. The fridges in the rooms look cool but aren’t functional. The automatic lighting panel was a bit temperamental and I could not for the life of me get the pendant lights to turn on. A bit of style over substance in my opinion."

"Rating: 7/10 My family and I stayed here in room 3007 (a "1 King Bed, River View, Supreme Suite") for two nights in February 2026. Positives: • The suite itself was the highlight of the stay and ultimately the reason the experience still lands on the positive side for me. It was spacious, modern, and genuinely comfortable, with a great bed, a large bathroom, and enough room for all of us to spread out without feeling on top of each other. The river views didn’t hurt either. For a family setup, this worked very well. • The location in the CBD made getting around easy. We were close to the CityCat and within reach of most things we wanted to do. • Breakfast and room service were generally solid. Nothing spectacular, but dependable. I was a bit surprised to find fish and chips on the menu without malt vinegar available anywhere in the building. Later I ordered a poke dish that turned out to be tofu-based rather than fish. That may simply be a local interpretation, but it caught me off guard. Negatives: • The biggest frustration came at checkout. Before arriving, I had called specifically to confirm that two rollaway beds could be added to the suite for our kids. At no point during that call, or at check-in, was I told that these would cost $90 per bed per night. When the charges appeared on the final bill, I raised the issue and explained that this had never been communicated. The front desk staff held firm and initially declined to adjust anything. After a long discussion, and only after I explicitly asked for some form of resolution, one night for one of the beds was removed. It was not a pleasant way to end an otherwise good stay, and it left me walking out more frustrated than satisfied. • The air conditioning in our room stopped working on the first day. No matter how low I set the temperature or how high I pushed the fan, there was no airflow from the vent. Maintenance came up and eventually resolved it. I was told the room has motion sensors that shut the system down after periods of inactivity. Fortunately, once fixed, it stayed cool overnight and did not become an ongoing problem. • The pool is outdoors but sits under a full overhang. It offers good protection from the sun, but the setup feels enclosed and a bit awkward rather than open and relaxing."

"I got the feeling that this hotel has been designed by someone that has never stayed at a hotel. There are some lovely artsy touches but they don't work. Check in was fine although the agent seemed more interested in my holiday plans than was entirely necessary. The clever touch of the drapes opening to reveal the part view of the river was cool. The rooms are perfectly adequate although the tin bath seems nonsense. The room is very hi tech with a switch by your bed to control lights and drapes and well who knows what else. We didn't eat in the hotel but had a glass of champagne in the bar on the lower floor. The champagne was flat and at $30 a glass that is not acceptable. The bar manager said that she'd pump up the bottle with gas. Never heard of that before. Note to hotel, it still doesn't work and whilst wasn't flat was distinctly lacking in what makes a champagne different....bubbles. The hotel has lots of designer touches but most of these are in the dark. This is possibly the darkest hotel I've ever stayed in apart from one hotel where there was a power cut. The game of how do you turn off all the lights took about 5 minutes. The bed was comfortable and air conditioning efficient. Alas the room clock was set on the wrong time (an hour out), perhaps the previous occupier thought we'd need an extra hour to find out how the electrics worked? The hotel is in a decent central location and were we to return to the wonderful city of Brisbane, we would not stay here."
