PB hotel design editorial

Dark charcoal brick punctuated by cantilevered lime-green balcony boxes makes the Art Series Hotel Group's commitment to provocation legible before you step inside. The Cullen, designed by Hackett Hall McKnight and opened in Prahran's Chapel Street precinct in 2009, takes its name and its entire visual identity from Melbourne-born artist Adam Cullen — the same confrontational painter whose horse portraits hung in the Art Gallery of New South Wales and whose Archibald Prize win in 2000 divided the Australian art establishment. Across the hotel's 116 apartments spread over six floors, Cullen's imagery migrates from canvas to frosted glass bathroom screens, where elongated dog and horse figures are etched directly into the panels, and onto oversized framed prints that anchor the dark-carpeted rooms against a palette of black, white, and acid orange. The interiors deploy dark-stained timber joinery and charcoal carpet as a foil for Kartell Ghost chairs and high-gloss lacquered surfaces — a deliberate tension between the rawness of Cullen's source material and the crisp finish of contemporary Australian apartment living. The penthouse suites open fully onto large stone-tiled terraces with folding glass walls, Philippe Starck's transparent chairs pulled up to outdoor tables against a panorama of the Melbourne skyline. The hotel's Chinese restaurant introduces a warmer register entirely, its ceiling grid of lacquered timber battens hung with amber drum pendants casting a tangerine glow over dark timber tables and cross-back chairs — a counterpoint that feels less designed than discovered.

"The Cullen is in a fantastic location in Prahran. It's opposite the historic Prahran Market, and a two-minute walk from Chapel St. If you need to go to the City, there is a tram out front on Commercial Rd. The hotel is modern and a bit quirky, with good-sized rooms. The mattress I had was a little uncomfortable as it tilted down slightly from the centre. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. Compared to the available Airbnb properties in the area, the rate was very good."

"Very good aparthotel, in a great part of Melbourne. However, the couple we were with had to complain about unclean sheets in their room."

"I stayed at The Cullen, Melbourne - Art Series for 1 night with my wife, in October. On arrival, we were disappointed to discover that there were no food or beverage outlets at the Hotel, as the license had not been renewed - not sure if this was an oversight or if it was deliberate, but disappointing, none the less. The hotel is in a good location, within walking distance of several bars and restaurants, so not a major problem. I booked a Suite on the Penthouse floor (6th floor) expecting something to special to remember and whilst the room was very pleasant, it was probably the smallest 'Suite' I had ever stayed in and had no bath! It also did not have any USB outlets in sockets, which was a pain! Overall, my experience of the hotel really came down to the room - which was nice, but definitely over-priced and under-facilitated. Quite frankly, there is better value elsewhere in the area - bigger rooms, with better facilities (like a bath and a view). Finally, I should mention the parking fee - $30 per day. This was reduced to $15 if you signed up to be a new Accor loyalty member, which I did."

"This is my Third or Fourth time at the Cullen. First time in 2011. It's still just as cute and lovely since I first came. The price and quality is unmatched compared to anything in the city. The studio rooms are amazing for a weekend away. Lots of space and very comfy bed. I never love the frosted glass bathroom walls, but this is common in a lot of hotels now, so not much you can do, just a warning if you're planning a weekend away with a new partner and need private bathroom time... I always recommend this hotel to anyone staying south and will always come back. The staff are always friendly and I got early check in and late check out no issues."

"great location, good value. Beds are comfortable but the set up with the glass wall (smoked) to the bathroom isn't ideal. Light shines through at night and not totally private as can see outlines."
