PB hotel design editorial

Little Bourke Street cuts through Melbourne's CBD grid just a block north of the famous laneways that define the city's cultural character, and it's this geography — gritty, pedestrian, art-saturated — that Laneways by Ovolo draws on as its entire design premise. The Hong Kong-based Ovolo group converted an existing mid-rise commercial building into a hotel that wears Melbourne's street culture explicitly: the lobby corridor lines itself with directional typography illuminated in neon, a rippled dark-lacquer ceiling stretching overhead like a distorted mirror, while a curved reception desk in warm timber and gold laminate rings a note closer to a 1970s bank than conventional hospitality. The rooms translate that energy into something liveable — mustard yellow banding running at cornice height, arched terracotta headboard panels framing grey upholstered beds, red Flowerpot-style pendant lamps on forest-green bedside tables, and bold black-and-white herringbone rugs underfoot. It's a palette that owes something to Memphis and something to the mid-century Australian pub, a combination that suits the property's neighbourhood entirely. The ground-floor bar and dining room leans into the pub reference more literally: cane-back chairs with moss-green cushions, merbau timber flooring, a coffered terracotta ceiling grid, and green banquette seating along the perimeter establish a room that carries the atmosphere of a carefully updated 1960s hotel dining room — one that happens to know exactly what it's doing.

"There is a lot to like about Laneways but there were one or 2 niggles which stopped us rating it higher. We were greeted by really friendly and welcoming staff at reception, who let us know about the daily happy hour and also to help ourselves to the candy stand - both really nice touches. The room - and bed - were comfortable - but there were a couple of stains of the furnishings which were a bit off-putting and not the advertised luxury we had expected. The laundry facilities were also great to use as we were in the middle of a long trip. The main issue we had is there was a family emergency back home and our daughter tried to contact us by calling the hotel several times (I was having reception issues with my mobile). We had been out with friends and nothing was said to us when we returned to the hotel - by which point our daughter had called them at least twice. We did get a call from reception first thing the following morning (thankfully we’d already managed to get in touch with the family by then) but just feel the situation could have been handled a little bit better. I don’t want this to detract from how nice the staff are in general (they even offered to help store luggage for us while we stayed with friends for a couple of nights) just possibly something to learn from for future? If you want a friendly hotel in the heart of Chinatown and the theatre area this is definitely for you."

"I choose Ovolo Laneways when I visit Melbourne from WA, as it's located in a great location- and I like to walk everywhere when I travel solo. It's so close to bars, restaurants, shopping strips (my fave is Gertrude st) and of course cbd access. The room is quirky, stylish and fun, and the staff are always accommodating and friendly! See you next time!"

"ABsolutely overwhelmed with the warm welcome I received when i stayed here. This was my second stay at this quirky, fun boutique Melbourne hotel and I seriously wouldn't stay anywhere else. The staff are friendly and ever so quick to assist if you have any concerns . On this occasion I had the luxury of staying in the Terrace suite (502) - spacious, clean, colourful, with a balcony looking towards the city (great sunsets) and a kitchen / bathroom equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay. Each bedroom had a small walk in and the master room had an ensuite and desk. One thing to note, despite being in such a fantastic location, the rooms are sound proof and the block out curtains are great. Practically everything is within walking distance and if not, there is a train station 5 mins up the road and trams close by. Theatres, bars and delicious restaurants all at your finger tips. The only problem ... which one to go to!! Thanks Team LBO for everything! See you soon :)"

"We thoroughly enjoyed our time at this hotel. It’s not luxurious by any means but it’s quirky and fun and the staff are very friendly. It’s very close to transit and whole host of restaurants a literally steps away."
