PB hotel design editorial

Little Bourke Street cuts through Melbourne's CBD grid just a block north of the famous laneways that define the city's cultural character, and it's this geography — gritty, pedestrian, art-saturated — that Laneways by Ovolo draws on as its entire design premise. The Hong Kong-based Ovolo group converted an existing mid-rise commercial building into a hotel that wears Melbourne's street culture explicitly: the lobby corridor lines itself with directional typography illuminated in neon, a rippled dark-lacquer ceiling stretching overhead like a distorted mirror, while a curved reception desk in warm timber and gold laminate rings a note closer to a 1970s bank than conventional hospitality. The rooms translate that energy into something liveable — mustard yellow banding running at cornice height, arched terracotta headboard panels framing grey upholstered beds, red Flowerpot-style pendant lamps on forest-green bedside tables, and bold black-and-white herringbone rugs underfoot. It's a palette that owes something to Memphis and something to the mid-century Australian pub, a combination that suits the property's neighbourhood entirely. The ground-floor bar and dining room leans into the pub reference more literally: cane-back chairs with moss-green cushions, merbau timber flooring, a coffered terracotta ceiling grid, and green banquette seating along the perimeter establish a room that carries the atmosphere of a carefully updated 1960s hotel dining room — one that happens to know exactly what it's doing.

"Tripadvisor gave this such a good rating and I loved the location so I booked this hotel. I’m so glad I did. We got the penthouse suite which came with a full kitchen, hot tub and two bedrooms. They even let us squeeze in our pesky third child, who decided to come to Melbourne! It really couldn’t be more conveniently located for great bars and restaurants. The staff were lovely and we were very excited about the welcome of a bottle of fizz and lollies (confusing for the British contingency who were expecting either a lollipop or an ice lolly, but what we got were sweets, but still appreciated!). The room decor was lovely as was the outside balcony but sitting outside after dinner in the hot tub was beyond your normal hotel experience. In the morning we didn’t do the breakfast but popped out to a local bakery and got coffee and croissants and ate it on the patio which was sublime. I definitely would stay here again and I can highly recommend it."

"What a gem of a hotel. All staff we spoke to were kind and helpful. Location was superb, with plenty of restaurants/bars. The street is a one way street and quiet so no traffic noise. We booked a 2 bedroom apartment as we have a toddler who has just learnt to walk and the apartment was a great size for her to explore. They have added little extras - a jar of lollies awaiting your arrival, lolly buffet in the lobby each day which is appreciated after a long day of walking and they do a happy hour in the afternoon. I will stay here when visiting Melbourne in future."

"I really wanted to rate this hotel higher. The staff are amazing and I would give them a 5/5. The rooms are what I feel need some improving for the price they are charging. During the stay the room and corridors had a stale smoky smell, not of cigarette smell but a smell that’s hard to describe. The bathroom, especially the bathroom sink, is quite small. I didn’t really have much to store as only stayed 2 nights but if you had a lot of toiletries it would be challenging to find a spot to put them. The wifi was not good at all. Kept dropping in and out. The air conditioning was so loud that we couldn’t leave it on at night as wouldn’t have been able to sleep. The walls between rooms are thin so could hear everything in the next room. Location is good, right near Chinatown. I’m hoping this is seen as constructive feedback as I feel this hotel has some great features, the staff are amazing, from cleaning to front desk staff, all of them are so friendly and helpful and they really made this hotel stand out from that perspective. The free lolly bar was a lovely and quirky addition. There are lots of quirky little additions that a great and I only think the quality of the rooms let this hotel down slightly."

"I had a great stay at Laneways by Ovolo, Melbourne. The room was very clean, well maintained, and comfortable. I was pleasantly surprised with a complimentary upgrade to the next room level, which made the stay even better. The staff also kindly offered me a late check-out, which allowed me to explore the city a bit more without rushing — a really thoughtful touch. The location is extremely convenient, right in the heart of the city and close to shops, cafes, and public transport. Everything was within easy walking distance. I would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone visiting Melbourne."

"Helpful staff, great rooms and little extras make it an individual stay - happy hour complimentary drink, free lollies and tea/ coffee bar. Quirky decor ads to the experience of not an average hotel. Really easy walk or tram to centre town and really close to theatres. Would gladly stay again"
