PB hotel design editorial

Anchored to Melbourne's Southbank promenade where the Yarra River curves beneath the city's glass and sandstone skyline, the warm honey-toned tower that houses The Langham Melbourne has been one of the defining landmarks of this stretch of riverfront since the hotel opened in 1992. Designed by the Melbourne practice Daryl Jackson Robin Dyke, the 388-room, 26-storey building adopts a post-classical vocabulary — arched cornices, layered crown detailing, and a warm buff masonry palette — that stands apart from the corporate steel towers flanking it, carrying instead the feeling of a grande dame European hotel translated into Australian scale. Inside, the interiors move between two registers visible in the images: the formal drawing-room mode of the lobby lounge, where Art Deco-inflected banquettes upholstered in sage leather sit beneath deeply coffered plasterwork ceilings with inset oval reliefs, and the residential warmth of the guest rooms, furnished with crushed velvet armchairs, tufted headboards in caramel suede, silver-framed console tables, and framed figurative oils. Higher-category suites introduce a more eclectic sensibility — a campaign chest, a cut-crystal decanter, a William Morris-patterned carpet — that gives the rooms something closer to a well-curated private apartment than a standard hotel floor. The glazed-roof pool, set within a steel-and-glass conservatory structure, catches the CBD skyline through its end window, a quietly considered detail that keeps the city present even at the building's most interior point.

"Excellent stay! Enjoyed the hotel and facilities it offered. Central and well located to everything Melbourne city has to offer!"

"A few years ago we stayed here and had a horrible experience, so I’m glad to say this time it was a lovely stay. I was travelling with my 5 year old son and we stayed for 2 nights in a Corner King Room with a lovely river view. The room was spacious and although it could do with some refreshing, it was still very nice. A few inexpensive updates could really elevate it so revarnishing the tables and chairs and replacing the two-seater couch would make the room feel brand new again. The location is spot on and hard to beat, which is why they can command higher rates. The bed was a little uncomfortable for me as I could feel the springs, so hopefully the mattress is updated soon. Saturday breakfast service was a little inattentive, with some areas left unattended like the Bacon and the Hash browns etc however Sunday was a noticeable improvement. The breakfast range was excellent and truly offered something for everyone. The pool and spa were great and definitely helped tire out my little fella. If you can spare the change for upgrading your room then definitely spend the money. It’s worth it imo. We return in June so that probably says it all."

"One suspects the High Tea at the Langham is trading on an OLD reputation rather than current experience. The decor and ambiance is exemplary. The service is worthy of a cafeteria. We averaged three requests for each service item. Some items just failed to materialize. Very disappointing- go to The Windsor, …you’ll be better off"

"A trip to celebrate some special birthdays was made really special by the team at Langham Melbourne! Attention to detail, absolutely first-class facilities and a genuine friendly smile from every staff member really made our stay. Breakfast in Melba is a world class experience and must be tried! Everything about Langham says quality, from the pool and spa to the beds and linen that offer a great night's sleep! The staff really went that extra mile to make our stay one to remember. A perfect relaxing weekend for our family - this will always be our choice in Melbourne."
