PB hotel design editorial

At 80 storeys, the tower designed by Cottee Parker cuts a distinctive figure against Melbourne's skyline — its faceted glass skin catching light differently at every hour, the gold-toned pixelated band at mid-rise giving the building an almost geological quality, as though strata of mineral wealth had been pressed into the curtain wall. The Ritz-Carlton, Melbourne arrived in 2023 claiming a specific kind of altitude: its 257 rooms and suites fill the top 17 floors, with check-in positioned at Level 80, making arrival itself a vertical journey that reframes the city below as something close to abstract. BAR Studio's interiors draw a careful line between the atmospheric and the specific, grounding the rooms in Melbourne's layered identity — Indigenous heritage, the Victorian gold rush, the laneway culture that defines the city at street level — through a collection of more than 1,000 commissioned artworks. The effect moves between registers: guest rooms pair warm timber panelling and jewel-toned upholstery in deep indigo and mustard against views that extend to Port Phillip Bay, while the sky-high dining space turns to terrazzo columns, ribbed timber banquettes, and a ceiling hung with Bocci-like pendant clusters that hover above crimson chairs like suspended moons. The infinity pool, elevated above the suburban grid with water nearly flush to floor-to-ceiling glazing, carries the feeling of swimming inside the clouds rather than beside them.

"We had a superb stay at The Ritz Carlton Melbourne. Rooms are spacious and superbly clean with beautiful Diptyque amenities (and not in stupid single use plastic bottles). Plush robes, comfortable bed and thoughtful design touches. Views are phenomenal. Our room had club lounge access and we thoroughly enjoyed having access to it. We have already booked our return visit."

"We came for lunch which is served on the 80th floor in the lounge bar. Don’t be put off by it being in the lounge bar, It is still a restaurant with great food. The views are spectacular across the whole of Melbourne. The service we received from start to finish was outstanding particularly the valet parking team who were fantastic. Our experience here was excellent and we both thank and recommend this hotel without hesitation."

"The Ritz Carlton Melbourne is a new hotel and as someone that adores luxury and high end design, I fell in love with the hotel. The lobby is on the 80th floor and the views are magnificent. Location -A short easy Uber ride from the airport, the hotel location can't be beat. It is across the street from the Southern Cross train station where many bus and tram also come. Check In- Speedy check in and we learned were upgraded to a large Panoramic King. We booked with our Stars agent and received free breakfast and $100. resort credit included in our rate. Room- The room was gorgeous and had a sofa, table chairs and a lovely bathroom with tub and shower. I took a bath with the bath salts they provided. Walk in closet and separate 1/2 bath. We requested an extra mini refrigerator and it was already in the room. Later on, we requested a microwave to heat up some take out and I think they went out and bought one, because it looked new. The beautiful cheese plate and the bottle of sparkling wine was a nice touch and we were so grateful. Concierge - David was great. He gave us a good map and helped us with our sightseeing plans. I highly recommend the National Gallery of Victoria and the Great Ocean Road tour. We used Hit the Road and it was excellent, comfortable Mercedes bus and Mark, tour guide and driver was excellent. Yarra River walk is must do and the Queen Victoria Market. All the trolley and buses are free within the city limits, but we walked everywhere. Breakfast - The breakfast at Atria on the 80th floor is a treat every morning. There is a small buffet section with pastries, juice, fruit, cereal, yogurt, salad and then the menu with the hot dishes. You can order whatever you want when breakfast is included. Caleb, our favorite server went out of his way for us when we mentioned that we wanted to get an Australian Open cap. He called the store to make sure they still had them. Debbie the manager helped us arrange a breakfast box on the day of the early morning tour. It arrived late and we almost missed the tour bus. When she found out, she sent up a gift (Ritz candle) to apologize for the delay. The in room dining also sent up another cheese plate and bottle of sparkling tea. Aline, our other favorite server was very sweet and we decided to stay in touch and be Facebook friends. She sent a kind note to our room. Dinner - We decided to have a casual dinner in the Lobby Lounge to use our resort credit and had Duck, Nicoise Salad and Lobster sliders. The food was excellent and service delightful. Go at sunset for a beautiful view. Pool- Amazing pool, our lack of time didn't allow us to use the facilities Club Lounge - I got a tour of the Club Lounge and with our breakfast included we didn't feel the need to purchase the Lounge access. It was calm and beautiful place to relax and enjoy the view with nicely prepared food and drinks. We gave Charlotte, the front desk manager a small gift and thank you note and in return she gave us 2 Ritz caps, 1 Ritz candle and a leather luggage tag. We were overwhelmed. I think the only other stay at a Ritz that can compare is the Ritz Carlton Langkawi. This was one of our best Marriott stays for hard product and service. It has spoiled us for all future stays. 10 Star."

"I rarely leave negative reviews, but unfortunately my recent stay at The Ritz-Carlton Melbourne fell far below the standards one expects from the Ritz-Carlton brand. From the moment we arrived, the air conditioning in our room did not function. Both nights we woke up in the middle of the night due to the heat and discomfort. We were informed there was no engineer on site overnight and were told to wait until morning, with a fan offered as a temporary solution — which is simply not acceptable at this level of hotel. Additional issues compounded the experience: • Extremely weak water pressure • Bathroom amenities with an unpleasant odor • Room key deactivated the first night without notice, despite active communication via chat and email • As a result, our room service was left outside and went cold • A towel request submitted via the app was ignored • Towels in circulation were visibly frayed and worn Individually, some of these may seem minor. Collectively, they reflect a serious lapse in maintenance, attention to detail, and service delivery. We ultimately decided to cut our stay short and check out early, as the situation became unbearable. While the General Manager responded with an apology and indicated the issues were escalated, the experience itself should never have reached this point. This was not the level of comfort, consistency, or care one expects when booking a Ritz-Carlton property."
