Sky-highart-layered

PB hotel design editorial

At 80 storeys, the tower designed by Cottee Parker cuts a distinctive figure against Melbourne's skyline — its faceted glass skin catching light differently at every hour, the gold-toned pixelated band at mid-rise giving the building an almost geological quality, as though strata of mineral wealth had been pressed into the curtain wall. The Ritz-Carlton, Melbourne arrived in 2023 claiming a specific kind of altitude: its 257 rooms and suites fill the top 17 floors, with check-in positioned at Level 80, making arrival itself a vertical journey that reframes the city below as something close to abstract. BAR Studio's interiors draw a careful line between the atmospheric and the specific, grounding the rooms in Melbourne's layered identity — Indigenous heritage, the Victorian gold rush, the laneway culture that defines the city at street level — through a collection of more than 1,000 commissioned artworks. The effect moves between registers: guest rooms pair warm timber panelling and jewel-toned upholstery in deep indigo and mustard against views that extend to Port Phillip Bay, while the sky-high dining space turns to terrazzo columns, ribbed timber banquettes, and a ceiling hung with Bocci-like pendant clusters that hover above crimson chairs like suspended moons. The infinity pool, elevated above the suburban grid with water nearly flush to floor-to-ceiling glazing, carries the feeling of swimming inside the clouds rather than beside them.

"We stayed here for five nights in April for a City break. We initially wanted an older hotel but are so pleased we chose the Ritz Carlton. The service was outstanding at every level from check in to the room, bar, restaurant and concierge. The staff remembered where we were going and asked if we had enjoyed our visits. The concierge helped with any travel questions We ate a bar snack , breakfast and dinner. The standard was very high with each and very reasonably priced for a hotel. We also used the pool several times. Like everywhere it was spotlessly clean; well equipped with towels and dreamy loungers. The view from the pool , restaurant and our room over Melbourne was wonderful especially at night time. Highly recommended"

"Checked off the second Ritz Carlton in Australia ❤️ (Now waiting for RC Sydney to be built heh) First time using my Club Upgrade voucher and boy was this worth it! Kind of hard to miss with its striking tall facade in the Melbourne CBD and arriving at its awesome front door was a welcome sight after the coffin seat experience 🍀 Check in lobby on level 80 was lovely to start, later accompanied by escort to the RC Club on level 79 to complete the process. Really lovely lounge space with plenty natural lighting and really comfy seating with the window seats being exceptionally popular 🫠 Executive King Room was super nice and plenty space for 1pax with luggage, great space to lay out all my barang, and a ln excellent design for doing laundry hahah. 🥶 Club food and drinks were smal but quality ones, with fantastic service by the entire team - Megan, Boom, Jio, Damon, and Jai. Felt so take care of from start to end and completely surpassed my RC Perth experience. 👑 The ONLY negative was those darn thin slippers which I even had to call housekeeping for. Wearing the licious bathrobe and the Ibis-esque slippers made me feel like a schitzo 🔮"

"I have been fortunate enough to stay at many luxury hotels and when asked to name my best ones, The Ritz-Carlton Melbourne is always in my top 3- but it feels almost in a different category to the others. It is physically and experientially above the rest! The rooms and lobby are exquisite, the pool is stunning and the whole place is built to take full advantage of the breathtaking views from every angle, being 80 floors above Melbourne. My favourite part of the Ritz-Carlton though is by far and away the lounge. Sure there's 5 meal services a day each with insanely delicious food and free-flowing champagne through the afternoon- but the thing that really sets it apart is the incredible welcome you receive from the lounge team there. They are truly a special group of people who are incredibly warm, accomodating, attentive and welcoming. It is the kind of service you can't "fake" - they genuinely care and want to delight their guests. Augusto, Dylan and Gio in particular remember us every time we stay and go out of their way to make our stay incredible. This is why we keep going back. I can't recommend the hotel overall highly enough, but if you are going to do, you are cheating yourself if you don't splurge for the lounge. Plan your day to be nothing but pool and lounge - you will not regret it!"

"Our recent stay at The Ritz-Carlton, Melbourne was nothing short of spectacular. From the moment we arrived the street level and taken to the 80th-floor luxurious lobby, the tone is set with breathtaking panoramic views of Melbourne. I was assigned a room on the 77th floor which came to life on first entry with the shade and curtains opening to maximize the incredible skyline views. Waking up to the floor-to-ceiling vistas of the city and the Queen Victoria Market area was a daily highlight. The daybed by the window is the perfect spot to sit back and watch the weather roll over Melbourne. Dining at Atria was a treat. The culinary offerings were exceptional. We enjoyed a variety of meals, from a perfectly executed breakfast overlooking the city during sunrise to a more formal dinner at night. The omelette and the salmon eggs benedict were highlights for the breakfast - fresh, beautifully plated, and accompanied by top-tier service. Having the handmade ravioli for dinner. The attention to detail in the plating along with great service elevated the overall experience. The Ritz-Carlton offers a sense of peace and luxury hard to come by today. The flawless service and amazing amenities made the stay enjoyable. Looking forward to a future stay."

"The Ritz-Carlton Melbourne is, quite simply, a standout. Finally, a city hotel in Australia that genuinely holds its own against international competitors. The difference? The team just get it. Check-in was seamless. I had booked via Qantas Hotels, and there was a mix-up with the room, which was resolved immediately and without fuss or additional charge. Exactly how it should be handled, and a great first impression. The room itself was brilliant - beautifully appointed, with outstanding views across the city. Every detail felt considered, from the selection of magazines to a thoughtfully stocked minibar with all the bits and bobs you would hope for. We stopped in for drinks at the lounge before heading out to dinner. Despite it being busy, we were seated straight away, and the atmosphere struck the perfect balance between lively and chaotic. While we missed out on spa bookings (a lesson in not leaving things to the last minute), the wellness facilities more than made up for it - impressive, calming and a highlight in their own right. Breakfast the following morning was exceptional - one of those meals where everything is done well, and nothing feels like an afterthought. We left wanting more, which says everything. Yes, it sits at the higher end for a city stay, but it absolutely delivers. We will be back."
