Sky-highart-layered

PB hotel design editorial

At 80 storeys, the tower designed by Cottee Parker cuts a distinctive figure against Melbourne's skyline — its faceted glass skin catching light differently at every hour, the gold-toned pixelated band at mid-rise giving the building an almost geological quality, as though strata of mineral wealth had been pressed into the curtain wall. The Ritz-Carlton, Melbourne arrived in 2023 claiming a specific kind of altitude: its 257 rooms and suites fill the top 17 floors, with check-in positioned at Level 80, making arrival itself a vertical journey that reframes the city below as something close to abstract. BAR Studio's interiors draw a careful line between the atmospheric and the specific, grounding the rooms in Melbourne's layered identity — Indigenous heritage, the Victorian gold rush, the laneway culture that defines the city at street level — through a collection of more than 1,000 commissioned artworks. The effect moves between registers: guest rooms pair warm timber panelling and jewel-toned upholstery in deep indigo and mustard against views that extend to Port Phillip Bay, while the sky-high dining space turns to terrazzo columns, ribbed timber banquettes, and a ceiling hung with Bocci-like pendant clusters that hover above crimson chairs like suspended moons. The infinity pool, elevated above the suburban grid with water nearly flush to floor-to-ceiling glazing, carries the feeling of swimming inside the clouds rather than beside them.

"We have just finished a wonderful stay at The Ritz-Carlton Melbourne and absolutely loved it. The hotel is beautiful, the rooms and views are amazing, and the gym is one of the best hotel gyms I’ve experienced. The pool is quite small, but lovely, and the overall facilities are excellent. The Club Lounge was a real highlight. The food was amazing and the service was genuinely next level. A very special mention to Jio and ALL her TEAM the Club Lounge Manager, who was exceptional and made our stay feel incredibly special. This is the kind of service you remember long after leaving a hotel. My only small suggestion for improvement would be the hairdryers in the rooms. For a hotel of this standard, I was surprised they weren’t Dyson. I actually chose not to use the older-style hairdryer in the room — especially as Dyson hairdryers are already available in the gym and sauna area. It would be a lovely finishing touch to have them in the rooms too. Otherwise, an absolutely fantastic stay. Beautiful hotel, wonderful atmosphere and outstanding people. Thank you for looking after us so well. We will definitely be back! ❤️"

"We had a fantastic stay at Ritz Carlton Melbourne - warmest of service, beautiful rooms, a good gym and pool to escape to. Welcome / Check in We were welcomed warmly by the bell hop team. Our car taken into the valet system and luggage immediately tagged and sorted. We were then ushered to the lifts for reception on 80th floor. Check in was friendly and warm. Aoki? Took care of us and we much appreciated the care in selecting a room for us that faced the city skyline. Room We were upgraded to a corner room with views of the city towards Crown Casino. Room was good sized and had separate toilet from shower areas. Once you walk in, the toilet is on the left, with a large area on the right for the double sinks, bath tub and shower. Plenty of hotel amenities is supplied in a small box on the right sink. There’s a central tray for face towels with hand and bath towels on the shelves below. There’s also a hair dryer hidden here. There are free cubby holes available for your toiletries bag. Shower area already have supplied shower gel, shampoo and conditioner. There’s a hand held shower and a rain shower option. Opposite the bathroom area is a walk in wardrobe where we could place two large suitcases to work out of. Plenty of wooden hangers are available. The room safe is in the drawers here and also the bedroom slippers and other items such as the laundry bag etc. There is also a make up counter, mirror and stool here. The room opens up to a large King bed on the right and a round table, sofa seating and easy chair on the left. Next to the round table is the Nespresso machine with half a dozen capsules. There’s a fridge in the cupboard under the tea / coffee making facilities, and the “to pay for” food items in the drawer. Also found in the drawers are cups, glass, stemware for wine. The bed is super comfortable and the quilt kept us very warm at night. There’s plug points and USB points on the bedside wall. The room switches light up when you touch them, providing a nice night light. The blinds and curtains are also electric operated. These close when you leave the room for the day and will open when you come back. Gym/ pool Gym is well equipped. Plenty of treadmills, elliptical, and stationary bikes. There’s also weight machines, free weights and Kettle bells. There’s also a quiet room or studio with weighted balls, rollers and yoga mats. The spa toilets /showers are also well appointed. It’s kept warm and there’s also a pool here to refresh yourself. The pool is also quite large affording one a nice lap swim if you so need the exercise. The pool also has plenty of sun beds overlooking the city from the 64th floor. Valet parking Valet parking is available for $80 per day. This is a very convenient service though there is a large public lots nearby at Spencer St outlets. Kudos We have a high regards for the team at Ritz Carlton. They offer the warmest of service, care for their guests and concern for their guests and attentive care for their rooms. Special mention goes out to Asst front office manager Aki Vio - so friendly and positive, and made a huge effort to get us a room we would love. Chief bell hop/Conceirge team Raf - always the fixture of warmth and the biggest smiles for guests arriving at the hotel. Conceirge David - took it upon himself to look for my “lost” windscreen mount for my car. Housekeeping team - always an impeccably clean room to come back to, and personal amenities super-organised. Turn down service with chocolates is always well loved by us. We really enjoyed our stay here and it is no small part thanks to the staff at this hotel. The hotel hardware is also well kept and superb. We will be back!"

"How is this hotel under the same brand as the Ritz Cleveland and St Louis? It has character, the finishes are high end, stylish and an amazing room layout. I loved the separate toilet from the restroom. My only complaint was we could not get our room cold enough. The Ritz as a brand cannot have this much disparity and inconsistency within its brand, it leads to un happy customers. If its an old outdated ritz with cheap furniture and no style it should be placed in a different brand."

"An amazing experience from the moment we arrived. Staff were wonderful and went above and beyond. Service and attention to detail were next level. All areas of the hotel were spotless. The wellness area was lovely with an infinity pool with an amazing view. The spa area was separated into men and women areas but that didn't matter as the facilites were great. . Convenient location in the city of Melbourne. I would highly recommend this hotel if you want to treat yourself. We had a wonderful experience to mark the celebration of our wedding anniversary. Thank you to the team at The Ritz Carlton."

"Went to the Ritz Carlton Lobby Lounge for lunch to celebrate our anniversary; The staff and ambience were very welcoming. Re the food, the starters and mains were delicious but for the deserts - they had a limited choice - cake of the day and a flourless lemon cake which we ordered; both were stale and not fresh and not worth the $22-24 a piece that we paid."
