PB hotel design editorial

Stacked glass volumes cantilevering over Little Lonsdale Street in Melbourne's CBD announce something architecturally assertive before you've crossed the threshold — a building that treats its facade as a series of displaced horizontal planes, their dark-framed curtain walls reflecting the surrounding cityscape back at itself. voco Melbourne Central is housed within the lower floors of a mixed-use tower developed by IHG, where the podium's dramatic geometry gives way to living green walls cascading down the building's flanks, softening what might otherwise present as pure corporate modernism. Inside, the interiors work a quieter register. Guest rooms are dressed in slate blue — channel-tufted velvet headboards anchoring the palette — with oak-framed bedside tables and geometric patterned carpet tiles that give the spaces a considered rather than merely competent feeling. The arched bathroom openings visible in the upper-category rooms introduce a classical note that sits in gentle tension with the building's exterior language. The restaurant level is the property's most resolved moment: bentwood cross-back chairs and upholstered barrel seats in felted grey share floor space with wide-plank timber, while full-height glazing frames the Melbourne skyline including the distinctive pyramid of Melbourne Central's Shot Tower cone below. An outdoor pool set against the living wall completes a mid-level terrace that frames the city's dense core with genuine compositional intelligence.

"This is a lovely stylish hotel in a perfect location for exploring Melbourne city. I was travelling solo and had a standard king room on a high floor - wonderful city view, which I even enjoyed while taking a shower since you can pull aside a curtain and watch the city lights from the shower. The bed was super comfy, great room service, lovely friendly staff, and the window opens a little for some fresh air, which I always appreciate. My only disappointment was that when I booked this hotel, only a few weeks ago, via their own website, they were advertising that the hotel pool was under renovations and guests would have access to the sauna and indoor pool at the building next door. I considered this when booking since I was looking for a hotel with indoor pool. On arrival, I was informed that no that the wasn’t happening after all, no apology, as I guess they considered it a good thing that their own pool was available. However a slightly warm outdoor pool on a windy balcony, is not happy news in the depths of winter when you were expecting access to a heated indoor one! Not the end of the world, and I would still stay here again."

"I stayed here for one night in a premium bathtub hotel room. The rooms are spacious, and the large bath overlooking the city is beautiful. The decor was modern, with all staff pleasant. The restaurant food and service were excellent, along with the breakfast the following morning. The pool has a nice view. However, it's very small."

"Great location in the CBD. Plenty of places to eat within walking distance. Reception was polite and quick. Room very clean. They have added Foxtel since my prior visit. Gym is small but still ok. Breakfast was an excellent choice."

"Lovely hotel that is beautifully appointed. Staff very nice and friendly. Dining / breakfast room is very nice with a good selection available. This hotel is in an excellent location and close to all the shops and entertainment that Melbourne is famous for. The elevator system was painful and there were people going up and down struggling to get to where they wanted to go. I was one of them . The swimming pool is nice but as an observer it looked difficult for people to get in and out of as it is elevated. The other downside is that when you are exiting the pool everyone in the bar can see you struggling to get out. Once out of the pool I’m pretty sure that you have to walk back in through the bar to get to your room. At least that’s what I saw people doing and there was water on the floor. Definitely put me off attempting to use it. Overall a lovely stay ."

"We had a week's stay in Melbourne and this was a perfect location for getting around Melbourne and seeing all main attractions, therefore a definite positive. Check in was very easy and seamless especially as we checked in just past midnight. Rooms large enough and extremely comfortable bed and pillows, good bathroom facilities and wonderful shower. Breakfast was exceptional, lovely city views, great choice of breakfast, wonderful coffee (as you would expect in Melbourne) and the staff were brilliant, personable, friendly, attentive and quick to clear tables. The rooftop pool is a very, very small pool and only relevant for a quick dip and not actually swimming, also no sun loungers only tables and chairs Highly recommend"
