PB hotel design editorial

Flared concrete portal columns announcing the entrance on Flinders Lane give W Melbourne its most legible gesture toward the street — a pair of splayed forms that frame the lobby threshold like a stage proscenium and signal, against the backdrop of Melbourne's Edwardian Port Authority Building opposite, that this tower has no interest in deferring to its neighbours. The building, designed by Woods Bagot and completed in 2021, rises 28 floors above the CBD with 294 rooms, the facade a curtain of floor-to-ceiling glazing hung with perforated metal screening that catches light differently across the day. Interiors by Nic Graham carry the same appetite for sensation through every level. Guest rooms layer black-and-white tartan carpet against brass-framed bed platforms, chunky hand-knitted throws in acid yellow or magenta providing colour punctuation against otherwise controlled palettes, perforated copper screens filtering the entry to some configurations. The WET deck pools its reflections across a mirror ceiling suspended above a marble-tiled terrace, the sinuous white reception desk and brass bistro furniture giving the space the atmosphere of a 1970s Italian resort reimagined at altitude. Most theatrical is the rooftop bar, where a canopy of radiating timber ribs fans overhead in a structural gesture somewhere between a whale skeleton and a tensioned timber vault, backlit LED strips running along each rib to illuminate the curved dark-oak bar below — a room that makes Melbourne's skyline feel like borrowed scenery.

About

Melbourne’s first luxury lifestyle hotel with its rebellious Flinders Lane address is now open. W Melbourne takes its design cues from the streets of Australia’s cultural capital, holding the back-lane entrance keys to what’s New/Next in the city, revealing a playground where the early risers to the late-night revellers can turn up the tracks. Extending the laneway culture inside, 294 bold rooms and suites peel back the layers and revel in the city’s history. 828 square metres of ultra-modern event space sets the stage for epic events. Four restaurants and bars will amp up the experience; with Warabi set to shake up Japanese dining, Lollo to take you from day, night to beyond under the culinary creative direction of Adam D’Sylva, Curious is the the bar to see and be seen in and Culprit will be a café come bar that serves up your double shot latte, to an afternoon spritz. Detox in our state-of-the-art FIT gym then retox with a dip and a sip in our WET® pool. Detox in our state-of-the-art FIT gym, then retox with a dip and sip in WET® the pool. Both are located on level 14 with panoramic views across the city skyline and are available to you 24/7. WET transform to an Adult Only (+16 years) space from 5PM to 6AM.

"Had a fantastic and enjoyable short term stay here while down in Melbourne for the Australian Open. The location is perfect, right in the heart of the city with everything close by which made getting around super convenient. The hotel has a modern feel throughout, and the room was clean, comfortable, and well set up with great amenities. It was the perfect place to relax after a big day at the tennis. Breakfast was a highlight with a great variety to choose from, really set up the day well. Staff were very friendly and the whole experience felt smooth and easy. Will definitely be back!"

"Our whole experience with this hotel was truly outstanding. Kitty at reception made checkin very easy and our Elite status was immediately recognised - the suite upgrade was much appreciated. Breakfast was excellent and very varied … something not to be missed! We also had dinner in Lollo one evening - great food and great service. Check out was equally easy and help storing our bags and sorting a taxi was greatly appreciated."

"I booked this hotel through the Chase Sapphire Card’s Edit program. Room benefits are similar to that of the AMEX plantinum travel program. We had a very spacious corner unit with large windows on both sides, plenty of light, and lots of room for two people. The bathroom is very spacious with a separate toilet room with its own sink and a Toto toilet. The primary bathroom area had a very spacious shower, a bathtub and two sink vanity. All toiletries as expected. The breakfast buffet was included in our rate. It was beyond ample with plenty of offerings for any type of diet. We ate at the same spot for dinner one night and received excellent service with a very good menu. Lollo is the name of the restaurant. Very good. The service at this property is exceptional on all levels. I highly recommend, especially if you’re planning to go to the AO in January. They do offer a free shuttle but the walk along the river to the venue is only about 30 minutes and quite easy."

"We booked a two-night stay (December 23–24) using Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts and applied my Titanium status. From arrival, the experience set a high bar. We were upgraded to a corner suite for the first night, and Kevin at the front desk went above and beyond to secure the same upgrade for the second night so we could remain in the same room for the duration of our stay. That level of proactive service and loyalty recognition made a meaningful difference—thank you, Kevin. Location The location is outstanding. The hotel is highly walkable to the CBD and sits right on the riverbank, which made exploring both sides of the Yarra effortless. Between walking and the nearby trams, we rarely needed anything else. Gym & WET Area The gym is well executed, with a full suite of Technogym cardio and weight equipment. It shares a floor with the WET pool area, which includes a bar and transitions to adults-only in the evening. While we didn’t experience it as a nightlife venue, it looked inviting. There’s also a co-ed steam room near the change rooms that we didn’t get a chance to try. Room (Corner Suite) Our upgraded suite occupied the entire end of the floor and was impressively spacious. The layout included a large living area, a separate bar and kitchen zone, a half bath, and a dividing door for privacy between the living and sleeping spaces. The bedroom was equally generous, with a massive bathroom and soaking tub, ample storage, and excellent sound and light control. Full blackout and privacy curtains, lighting, and climate controls were all electronic and independently managed between the bedroom and living room—very tech-forward and perfectly aligned with the W brand aesthetic. Breakfast & Dining Breakfast was included and served at Lollo. While the restaurant was extremely busy both mornings and the environment felt chaotic, seating was handled efficiently. Guests can order one à la carte item (e.g., avocado toast or eggs Benedict), alongside a broad buffet with enough variety to satisfy most preferences. On Tuesday night, Lollo also offered a steak special—around AUD 120 for two steaks and fries—which was excellent and great value for the quality. Bars We also visited Curious, the speakeasy just off the lobby in the basement. The design is very cool, and the drinks are creative and interactive. It’s a must-try while on property. Overall We loved our stay at W Melbourne. The upgrade recognition, thoughtful service, and prime location made this a standout visit. We only wish we had stayed longer and will absolutely return on our next trip to Melbourne!"
