PB hotel design editorial

Few buildings in Western Australia carry the civic weight of the State Buildings complex on the corner of St Georges Terrace and Barrack Street — a cluster of late Victorian and Edwardian structures that housed the colony's treasury, lands office, and public works department from the 1870s onward. When COMO The Treasury opened in 2015, the challenge for architect Kerry Hill and his Singapore-based practice was not to decorate a heritage shell but to complete it, inserting 48 rooms across the historic fabric while adding a new wing that meets the original without deference or apology. Hill's approach to the interiors sets pale ash timber, woven cane chairs with Thonet-influenced bentwood frames, and fine wool carpets against the buildings' existing masonry bones — the dark-painted panelling and original brick fireplaces visible in the heritage rooms giving way, in newer spaces, to bleached timber headboards and linen-pale walls that carry the same quiet restraint. The restaurant sits in the new addition, its perforated metal ceiling and full-height glazing framing views over the city in a language that is contemporary without being aggressive. The 25-metre lap pool, enclosed in a glass-walled structure slotted between old brickwork and a modern service wing, crystallises what Hill achieved across the whole property: the sensation that old and new have been held in careful, unhurried tension rather than forced into false harmony.

"Best Hotel I have stayed in around the world, service was impeccable and staff went above and beyond. Rooms were beautiful, clean, spacious pure bliss"

"We really loved staying here and would very happily stay here again. Our room (7) was easily accessible via stairs (I don't use elevators). It was even more beautiful than expected from the website photos and we loved it. Very comfortable bed, lovely view of the church, nice amenities, fantastic shower. The hotel is in a great location - very central and within walking distance of sights. The staff were all lovely. There are some good restaurants in the building itself and a nice bakery/coffee shop. The only negative is that we don't like a la carte breakfast menus and prefer a buffet - it would be helpful if staff explain the juice/fruit of the day before serving it so that you have the chance to say no. But this is a minor picky point for what is an excellent hotel. Highly recommended"

"Looking for accommodation during my stay in Perth, I discovered this heritage building and I had no hesitation in exploring how its tranquil, chic design can perfectly preserve the 19th-century heritage building while offering modern, high-tech conveniences. Stepping into the hotel and the Treasury Room, I was impressed by the seamless blend of 19th-century heritage architecture with contemporary, minimalist interiors. I must thank Mathilde Gouhier, Head Concierge, for her impeccable arrangements during my stay, including my early check-in, recommendation and reservation for top restaurants and cafes in Perth, flexible arrangements for my late departure, rental for the e-bike, and the list goes on. The stay has left me a positive impression on COMO Hotels and Resorts. It has become one of the top hotel groups to be taken into consideration for accommodation in other countries. If you are a lover of an intimate and ultra-luxurious city break, COMO The Treasury is your urban sanctuary."

"This is my favourite hotel in Perth. Actually it is the only one I have tried in Perth. It is so perfect why would I stay anywhere else? Beautiful decor, large, airy rooms and bathrooms, wonderful ceiling heights, great staff. Also a great central location. I stayed here twice, bookending a photographic trip to the mining areas. A perfect treat before and after my trip."
