PB hotel design editorial

At the corner of Murray and Barrack Streets, where Perth's pedestrian mall gives way to the CBD's commercial grid, a crisp white tower of chamfered concrete fins and stepped terraces announced something new for Western Australia when QT Perth opened in 2018. The twenty-story building, designed by Buchan Group, presents a stacked geometry against the skyline — deep-set windows recessed behind blade-like frames, the facade carrying the feeling of a contemporary resort tower that has been sharpened rather than softened. At street level, warm timber screens and dark metal entries signal a deliberate shift in register from the tower's cool minimalism above. Inside, the interiors follow the QT brand's house approach of theatrical eclecticism, here interpreted through a palette that borrows from Western Australia's extraordinary natural landscape without resorting to literal reference. The 184 guest rooms are finished in deep-stained jarrah-like hardwood flooring, channelled amber velvet headboards, and round ochre cushions stitched with sunburst motifs — a visual vocabulary somewhere between mid-century Australian glamour and contemporary cabinet-of-curiosities excess. One room category deploys bird-of-paradise wallpaper behind a jewel-toned curtain rod in brass, plum leather club chairs pulled alongside a dark lacquered minibar. The ground-floor Santini Bar and Grill layers terracotta pendant lights over teal banquettes beneath a mirrored industrial ceiling, while the rooftop Anda Bar offers hardwood decking and wicker seating across the Perth skyline at dusk.

"We have always loved coming to the QT for a staycation. The room was very clean, luxurious, and perfect for a couple! Maria was a very lovely receptionist/host. Only things that could have made it better would be a small gift/drink for my birthday upon arrival! We also couldn’t get the chrome cast to work."

"This was the first stop on our long awaited round the world trip which was organised with help from Turquoise who put together an amazing itinerary. We arrived in Perth after a 17 hour flight from Heathrow (just missing the start of the Middle East conflict). We had booked a 2 night stay at QT to get over jetlag and meet up with expat friends before moving on to Rottnest Island. Fortunately we were able to check in to our room straight away. It had a bath and walk-in shower, king sized bed and city view. Unfortunately we found it very cramped and dark. The hotel corridors were painted black, the room was painted black and the bathroom had black tiles and floors. Even the light switches were black - so well camouflaged we often struggled to find them! There was a wardrobe, chaise long, chair and small table all along the wall in front of the window. They were so close together you couldn't sit at the table without blocking access to the wardrobe and all this furniture blocked access to the window (difficult to draw the curtains or admire the view). There was also hardly any space for luggage. Maybe we are just getting older, or struggling with jetlag, but it just wasn't comfortable for us. The location was great. Close to shops and a short walk down to Elizabeth Quay and the ferries. The rooftop bar was closed both nights we stayed (which was a shame) but we had drinks in their other bar (another dark and trendy space!) The day we left we had to get to the ferry terminal quite early to get to Rottnest and tried to order an early room service breakfast the night before. We were told to use "the app" in the morning (you can't order the day before) and it doesn't start taking orders until 6.30am when the kitchen opens. So we woke up early and made our order at 6.30am hoping breakfast would arrive for us to eat it and make our way to the ferry in time. Luckily the kitchens did well and delivered a prompt breakfast order which was delicious. We were able to walk with our luggage to the ferry (it's downhill) in about 10 minutes and start the next part of our adventure."

"We arrived in Perth at the end of over three weeks in Australia for a three-night stay. We had stayed in the QT Hotel in Melbourne at the start of our trip. We were three couples in our mid-60's. I would not stay in this QT Hotel again. Perhaps we were the wrong generation. The rooms were just too hip and too cool by half. Very modern look. Very little space for two people to unpack. My wife took the small closet and small drawers, and I was stuck living out of the cubes in my suitcase on the floor. The worst of it was that there was very little to no lighting in the room. Even during the day, I had to use my flashlight on my phone to find clothes in my cubes. It was so unnecessary and very annoying. Also, the breakfast cafe in the lobby was closed on the weekends, and the restaurant would not do take-out breakfast (only coffee). If you're going to Perth, find another hotel."

"Excellent hotel ,lovely spacious clean room with 2 large walk in rainfall showers that had good power. Check in very smooth. All the staff very helpful. Good location as easy walking distance about 10 to 15 mins to Elizabeth Quay and lots of shops and cafes/restaurants very near the hotel. Free "blue CAT" bus to King's Park from nr Elizabeth Quay and ferries to Rottnest Island from the Quay also. Uber to the airport was about 30 NZ Didn't eat at the hotel as so many places locally Would definitely stay here again"
