PB hotel design editorial

Conceived as Ace Hotel's first Australian outpost and its southernmost property globally, the 264-room Sydney address is housed within a pair of buildings on Bourke Street in Surry Hills — a restored 1920s brick warehouse joined to a purpose-built contemporary tower clad in dark steel and planted terraces. Tzannes Associates handled the architecture, while Atelier Ace collaborated with Sydney-based Flack Studio on the interiors, a pairing that kept the work grounded in local sensibility rather than importing a readymade aesthetic from Portland or New York. The lobby makes its intentions clear from the first moment: raw brick arches, exposed concrete columns, and Douglas fir ceiling grids inset with globe pendants frame a floor of deep red marble, while generous leather banquette seating — crinkled and well-worn in tone if not yet in age — anchors the room in the register of a lived-in social club rather than a hotel arrival sequence. Guest rooms carry the same material restraint, their walls clad in speckled cork-like acoustic panels, oak headboards keeping company with low upholstered window seats in forest green or teal velvet, terracotta carpet running underfoot. Record players and acoustic guitars signal the brand's long association with music culture. At the rooftop bar, terrazzo-splashed wall panels and blue-cushioned banquettes open toward tree-lined Surry Hills rooftops — a room that feels genuinely of this city rather than imposed upon it.

About

Ace Hotel Sydney reanimates the historical Tyne Building in Surry Hills, built above Australia’s first kiln discovery. Inspired by the rich history of Surry Hills and the warm, cinematic color palette of the Australian landscape, the hotel marks Ace’s first stake in the Southern Hemisphere and was designed in partnership with Flack Studio. The building’s design merges the past with the present, stirred by the city’s rough-hewn history: the renegade razor gangs that ruled the 1920s, the modernist art boom of the 1960s, the Gay Solidarity Group protests of the 1970s and the vibrant cultural coalescence of generations of migrant communities. LOAM, a neighborhood spot for natural fare, anchors the lobby level along with café Good Chemistry, plus there’s a bar smackdab in the hotel’s lobby. Up top there’s Kiln, an 18th-floor rooftop restaurant and bar helmed by Beau Clugston, with a design by Fiona Lynch. Ace Sydney is a neighborhood place, with an invitation open to all

"The only good thing about this hotel is it is in a good location in Sydney. Rooms VERY small really tiny and very dark. The hotel is quite loud. I think this place wants to be hip which might be fine, but we were there for business. No desk in the room so no place to take business calls. No place to put even a suitcase. Service is very slow. Breakfast is not included so everyone has to order from the menu. It takes a long time to get food and even longer to get coffee."

"Absolutely loved staying at the Ace Hotel in Sydney. Couldn’t fault a thing. It’s a great location, and we loved our room. The shower in particular was amazing ! The restaurant downstairs was great and the staff were so friendly. We will definitely stay here next time we are in Sydney. Thanks again, Luke and Lachlan"

"Popped in for lunch on the recommendation of a friend. Wonderful atmosphere- a bit of an oasis in the frenzied locale of the CBD edge. Very New York with multiple spots to sit and have coffee/drinks/lunch. Very welcoming staff and great service. Enjoyed the library space with a great variety of interesting books to browse while waiting for food and drink. Highly recommend!"

"Ace Hotel has a great location in leafy Surry Hills surrounded by Art Galleries, excellent eating places and close to Hyde park. The hotel is welcoming and arty with a relaxed lobby lounge bar area and the restaurant which does excellent breakfasts/ brunch. I can recommend the French toast. Great coffee too. We almost loved our terrace room with its outside sitting terrace, very comfortable bed, and the novelty of a guitar and turntable . However the bathroom is immediately inside the door and is open plan with the bedroom. The lack of privacy is the reason I couldn’t score it higher."

"I made a last minute booking for my son and myself. I really loved the location so thought we'd cope having to share a bed seeing it was a king bed which we did. What I loved: - Amazing location, so central to everywhere - Really helpful and friendly staff - Beautiful interiors in all areas, a feast for the eyes while also being super cosy - Gorgeous bar, cafe and restaurants with really comfy couches to hang out in, wish we'd had more time to just to hang out downstairs on those couches and make the most of the places to eat there What I didn't love: - The half window which made the medium plus room feel really small and cramped which it kind of was, I thought it was going to be a bigger space for the price (probably got the worst room because of the last minute booking and availability) - No privacy between the bathroom and the bedroom. I guess that's fine for couples but I can't imagine all couples would love this. I totally get the walk through the bathroom from the entry which is a clever use of space. Just a door between the bathroom and bedroom would have been good - Not enough places to hang towels so they ended up on the floor Biggest bugbear: - The parking. I'd definitely stay here again in a bigger room or a room with a better window configuration but not if I needed to drive around the city during the day. The website stated 'Ace Hotel guests are offered a special rate of $50 per 24-hour period at this garage'. I shouldn't have assumed but I did assume this meant you could come and go during this 24 hour period and just pay $50. It was based on an hourly rate up to the $50. So each time we went and came back we had to keep paying for the parking which added up to quite a bit of money. It also didn't help that with the construction works next door we couldn't park out the front to unload so had to lug all our stuff from the parking building to the hotel. That wasn't pleasant."
