PB hotel design editorial

Sandstone arches cut from colonial-era warehouses form the structural spine of the Harbour Rocks Hotel Sydney, a 59-room MGallery property carved from a cluster of 1887 merchant buildings on Harrington Street in The Rocks — the oldest precinct in Australia's oldest city. The conversion preserved the original Italianate brick facade with its distinctive Dutch-gabled parapet and arched fenestration intact, while the interiors were gutted and reimagined to expose the raw sandstone bones beneath: thick quarried walls, barrel-vaulted passageways, and timber ceiling beams that speak to the building's past life as a warehouse serving the adjacent Circular Quay wharves. Inside, the design team layered those ancient materials with a warm, contemporary residential palette that avoids the usual heritage-property reverence. Guestrooms are finished in deep charcoal-painted brick with white-painted exposed rafters overhead, the beds dressed in kilim-patterned throws that bring a global craft sensibility into conversation with the colonial fabric. The lobby's double-height sandstone arches frame loose-slipcovered sofas and a brass-accented coffee table in a way that feels closer to a well-travelled private house than a managed hotel space. In the restaurant below, green-veined marble tabletops and bentwood dining chairs sit against walls of uncut golden sandstone hung with a Beni Ourain-style rug — the accumulated textures of the building doing most of the atmospheric work, and doing it well.

"We stayed here for three nights and were on the third floor. Unfortunately, there is no lift, which made it a real struggle. I felt especially sorry for the elderly couples — although the staff kindly helped with luggage, they still had to manage the stairs themselves. The rooms were quite dusty, but the shower was excellent and had great pressure. Breakfast was very greasy, so I stuck to toast and tea. If you want coffee, you have to pay extra, though there is coffee and hot water available from a flask. That said, the staff were lovely and very helpful throughout our stay."

"The room we were given was dark and small. The shower screen had dirty streaks on it. It also had a non functioning TV. We were told it couldn’t be fixed so we were offered two free drinks by way of compensation. Later that afternoon the hairdryer blew up in my hand when I turned it on. Black soot everywhere. It fused the power points so we asked for a new room. The new room had large stains on the carpet. We paid $388 for one night including breakfast. A lot of money for a very average experience. The old building is lovely and staff were helpful and kind. Bed was comfy but the rooms really need better maintenance."

"We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this charming and historic hotel!! Staff were friendly and you couldn’t get a better location. Room was clean and comfortable. We had a view of the opera house at times which was an unexpected bonus!! (View was blocked by cruise ships at times)!"

"Avoid this hotel. The standard of this hotel has definitely slipped in the past two years, which was when I stayed last. Coincidentally, Ode Hotels has taken over from Accor in that time. My room (101) was not fit for purpose. It smelled damp and had mosquitoes. I had an extremely bad night’s sleep due to intermittent bursts of loud noise from either the a/c or some pump in the ceiling cavity. The carpet is very badly stained. It fails the basics of accomodation. Reading other reviews, I note many similar poor reviews reporting the same or similar issues in the same room or other rooms. The staff are polite. But it’s clear from my experience and those of many others that the management approach is to avoid fixing a deteriorating property, and placate unhappy customers with different rooms or polite apologies. That will not work for your reputation or return business."
