PB hotel design editorial

Directly beneath the southern pylons of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, where Walsh Bay's Working Wharf 1 once handled the cargo of a working port city, Pier One Sydney Harbour sits in a heritage-listed timber and iron pier structure dating to 1912 — one of the last surviving finger wharves on the harbour. The conversion, completed in the early 2000s and subsequently refurbished, preserved the industrial bones of the building: the original heavy-timber post-and-beam framing, corrugated iron cladding trimmed in red, and the elevated pile structure extending over open water that gives certain rooms their extraordinary views of both bridge and harbour simultaneously. Inside, the interiors balance the wharf's raw industrial character against a warmer contemporary palette. Guestrooms — 189 in total across three levels — feature leather-panelled bedheads with brass rail detailing, low-slung timber platform beds, and deep-toned patterned carpets in harbour blue and ochre, with abstract sculptural wall pieces evoking breaking waves. The tension between exposed beam ceilings in the original wharf sections and the more refined finishes of the heritage wing gives each room category a distinct atmosphere. The restaurant retains wide-plank hardwood floors and black-painted structural steelwork overhead, softened by bouclé dining chairs and globe pendant clusters. On the harbour deck, rattan hanging chairs and white canopy sails furnish the outdoor terrace in a register that feels less like hotel design and more like a private waterfront club — with the bridge arching overhead as its permanent backdrop.

"This is a lovely hotel in a great location. The hotel is a converted old pier building and is long and only three storeys high. It offers views of Harbour Bridge almost immediately on leaving and also nice views over the water from the back terrace. Our room was a nice size with all the usual amenities and a decent sized free standing bath plus separate shower. There is a restaurant/ bar on the ground floor as well as a gym. Staff were very good."

"Average experience : not really what I was expecting. Location is ok but didn’t feel the atmosphere of an old Pier. Rooms are small and dark. Personnel at bar is inexperienced and not friendly. I do not recommend it."

"There is one person who single handedly saved this property from a one star review and elevated it to a five star review. That person is Kim at the front desk and check in. We have travelled quite a bit and Kim was definitely one of the most helpful persons we have dealt at check in. We had booked two bridge view rooms for the new year fireworks. We called after booking and the person from the property assured us that as long as we have booked bridge now rooms, we will have view of the fireworks. She also mentioned that the property has a separate area to view fireworks for the hotel guests. When we got to checkin, we were given a room with a very small window, with a barely visible side view of the bridge pylons and absolutely no view of the fireworks. The thing is, all the rooms are bridge view rooms but by default we were given the worst possible rooms of all of them. I tried to explain that the only reason we booked this property and paid the premium was because of the assurance of the fireworks view. The one interaction which was really disappointing and disturbing was the condescending attitude of Vy from front desk. Not sure if she did not like our accent or had some other problem but she was really dismissive and rude and did not want to do anything to address our concerns. Thankfully we had Kim helping us and she went above and beyond to address our issues and make the stay work for us. We really appreciate her help and efforts to make us feel welcome at the property! I must also mention Lewi Nathaniel who was another member of of the team who went above and beyond!"
