PB hotel design editorial

Directly beneath the southern pylons of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, where Walsh Bay's Working Wharf 1 once handled the cargo of a working port city, Pier One Sydney Harbour sits in a heritage-listed timber and iron pier structure dating to 1912 — one of the last surviving finger wharves on the harbour. The conversion, completed in the early 2000s and subsequently refurbished, preserved the industrial bones of the building: the original heavy-timber post-and-beam framing, corrugated iron cladding trimmed in red, and the elevated pile structure extending over open water that gives certain rooms their extraordinary views of both bridge and harbour simultaneously. Inside, the interiors balance the wharf's raw industrial character against a warmer contemporary palette. Guestrooms — 189 in total across three levels — feature leather-panelled bedheads with brass rail detailing, low-slung timber platform beds, and deep-toned patterned carpets in harbour blue and ochre, with abstract sculptural wall pieces evoking breaking waves. The tension between exposed beam ceilings in the original wharf sections and the more refined finishes of the heritage wing gives each room category a distinct atmosphere. The restaurant retains wide-plank hardwood floors and black-painted structural steelwork overhead, softened by bouclé dining chairs and globe pendant clusters. On the harbour deck, rattan hanging chairs and white canopy sails furnish the outdoor terrace in a register that feels less like hotel design and more like a private waterfront club — with the bridge arching overhead as its permanent backdrop.

"A good but not great experience. The location is outstanding. The rooms to a high standard. Let down by inexperienced restaurant staff. Food going to wrong tables, drinks forgotten, not knowing the table we were sitting at when paying - even though she had served us all evening. The classic - serving our sides for dinner and asking if we needed anything else? How about our Mains. Good experience overall despite this."

"An incredible stay in every way. My husband and I spent two nights at Pier One and were both really looking forward to our experience before flying home to England. We previously lived in Bondi so it was a trip down memory lane. The service, location and ambience were first class and the staff so warm and welcoming. A special mention to Kim at the front desk. Upon checking in I told her how excited we were to be staying under the bridge. That evening a beautiful platter of fruit and bottle of Shiraz was placed in our room compliments of the hotel! So thoughtful - we were so chuffed! A perfect end to our holiday and the most picturesque place to stay in Sydney. Big cheers to all the courteous staff. X"

"We arrived from our flight from LA. Our room was not immediately ready, but they took our bags and texted me before noon that it was ready. A very unique room as the hotel was converted from a warehouse. Small windows, but great blackout shades. Despite its location it was extremely quiet, dark and cool. A large room as well. The breakfast was excellent as were the cocktails. Beautiful sunset views and a short walk to the harbor, the Rocks and the Opera House. We were pretty much under the bridge. My only disappointment was the gym was poorly equipped. Bell staff, front desk and waiters were all very attentive and friendly."

"Superb location, seems to be close to everything you want to visit. Great reception and check in. Excellent concierge. Food very very good indeed. Room air con needs cleaning unpleasant smell. View of Sydney harbour bridge from Room window. But windows filthy. Room for breakfast very cold everyday. Sevice at breakfast and on the quay side very hit or miss indeed. Needs attention to detail and the team to pull together and know their behaviours reflect on the guest experience in the hotel. Would I go back? Yes."
