PB hotel design editorial

Two Sydney landmarks fused into a single address — the 1929 Gowings department store and the 1929 State Theatre, both heritage-listed Beaux-Arts and Gothic Revival piles on Market Street — give QT Sydney a structural identity that no amount of interior design budget could manufacture from scratch. Nic Graham oversaw the architectural conversion, completed in 2012, threading 200 rooms across nine floors through buildings whose bones resist conventional hotel planning at every turn. The result is a property where corridors surprise, rooms arrive in unexpected configurations, and heritage plasterwork coexists with deliberately provocative contemporary gesture. Stylist Shelley Indyk's interiors lean hard into theatricality, taking the State Theatre's show-business DNA as license for a maximalist palette that shifts register between room types. Some rooms carry dark-stained timber panelling salvaged from the Gowings fit-out, dressed with cobalt velvet armchairs and graphic printed cushions; others deploy teak-strip flooring, tan leather headboards and hexagonal patchwork rugs in crimson and khaki, with amber-lit display cabinets running the length of a wall like stage props. The hotel's most arresting space is the Gowings Bar and Grill dining corridor — its gilded vaulted ceiling, mosaic tile floor, bentwood bistro chairs and vintage circus posters preserved almost entirely intact — while the main restaurant above trades the heritage drama for warm saddle-leather tub chairs beneath a ceiling installation of suspended fabric forms.

"Do you realise how it feels to not be given a free upgrade when the person before you got one? I used to always get upgrades here. It makes you feel not important and that you don't matter. I was going to give it a one star review but you got saved by the comfy beds, the fact that it is a lot easier to stream to the TV's since the last time I stayed and I couldn't hear much traffic or guests. Other hotels I have stayed at in Sydney do not offer streaming or have thin walls so I appreciate that. Plus bed was comfy despite being two double beds put together like most hotels in Sydney. Oh and having a cafe downstairs is much nicer than hotels like the Novotel that refuses to allow you to order a small breakfast and forces you to pay $40 for the buffet. But maybe I gt lucky and it was a quiet Sunday night. Pity about not being upgraded it would have made me definitely want to come back. But never say never."

"Loved this hotel; i haven’t stayed here for a few years and the hotel service was fantastic. The room was spacious, stylish and full of light. Breakfast at the Parlour was excellent especially the coffee. Only disappointment was that both bars (Parlour and Gowings) were full in the evenings so we were unable to experience them. Definitely recommend a stay here. The hotel was very well-located ."

"If you like your hotel stay with a bit more personality, the QT is an excellent choice. Stylish, theatrical sl and a little moody, set in a beautiful historic building. The colour scheme is dark and glamorous, so if you prefer the more standard luxury hotels, this is probably not for you. And even if you know the QT hotel chain, this is definitely the most theatrical sibling This wasn't our first stat here so we knew exactly what we were getting - and we loved it. A stunning historical building, lots of black and red, quirky art everywhere, lifts that play songs based on the number of people in it. We're here for all of it. We managed to snag a really good sale deal too, with breakfast included and $40 food and beverage credit each day (to be used in the hotel cafes or room service). Even better, they upgraded our room. (And it was great, 5th floor quiet, huge, no view but that was no issue at all) So why only 4 stars, not 5? Consistency. Cleaning was at 2pm one day, then 9.30am the next. If you missed that, you got a card under your door but no cleaning. Not a big deal but I had to call and then also visit reception to get some more towels. Got those in the end and the nice guy at reception threw in a quick clean as well. That was kind. Breakfast was nice each of the mornings we had it, but the same dishes were different each time. One day the smoked salmon came with a salad. The other two days it didn't. One of these days it wasn't even smoked, it was salted. Again with the avocado on toast- - different each day too. It was all delicious in every iteration, just very inconsistent. Breakfast service was the same, great twice but one day everyone seemed really frazzled and struggling to keep up. Again when it was great it was really great but just not consistent. For breakfast if it's included you get one main course, one hot drink and one juice included. There isn't a huge selection but it is yummy. Would we stay again? Definitely."

"A fabulous location, very funky decor, lovely staff, very helpful. Cool hotel. I do feel that the whole Carnivale vibe hides a bit of shoddy cleaning and old things, but that's cool, it's the vibe. But....the bath...i read the reviews about the bath and i was so so so excited. I arrived earlier than my two friends for our girl's weekend, and was super keen to have a bath and bubbles... however...the bath was confusing at best and awful at worst. It had a big step in it, and was short, so you couldn't lie down. If you sat on the step, your top half was out of the bath, and you'd wasted all this water in the deeper section where your feet were. I tried to sit in the deep section, but the tap sticks out into the middle of the bath and the plug dial is where your head is. It is a terrible bath. I have no idea who on earth would think it was a good idea to put this bath in. It is awful. And there is ample space for a regular bath. It's not an accessible bath- i had wondered that, but there were steps into the room, and it was truly not accessible at all. so nope, not that. If you go and want a bath, great but check you don't have a dreaded half bath or whatever this awful awful bath is called. Even a month later it makes me mad that we had the terrible luck to get this ridiculous "bath". Other that that, it's a great location for shopping, the theatre and going out."

"This awesome hotel in the old gowings building in the heart of Sydney just rocks.. We flew in from Perth on the red eye. With no sleep and a 3 hour time difference we were done.. From the time we arrived at 7 .am the from door guy to the two gorgeous ladies on the front deck couldn't of made up feel more at home...checked our bags in then told us where the best coffee and breakfast was while they hurried our room up as they could see we were wacked.. By the time we arrived back we only waited 30 minutes in the crazy awesome foyer with so much history , we were handed a funky wooden disc which is the room key, shown the lift and up to the 9th floor in like a nite club with lights and music unlike any lift ive been in before.. on opening the door bag we're waiting king-size bed looked too good not to want to curll up and catch some well needed zzzzzs.. after a few hours sleeps we unpacked. Room was brillant so much character and funky little touches.. bathroom big.... two sinks big avocado deep bath great Hugh shower and separate loo just .Perth fect... dinner was down stairs in the parlour, the staff were awesome like fresh off the stage in a theatre play or musical.. food nice... breakfast was at the same place and staff/ food on point.. they had placed a bottle of wine with a fabulous bath bomb in our room with a card congratulations on our anniversary 45 years!! nice touch thanks guys.. 4 nite stay would stay again. note our package had a welcome drink which we never got but a bottle of wine was a very nice touch. The uniforms are delightful so colourful and different unlike any other hotel ive stayed in love them. There was a great bar in the gowings restaurant which we had a few drinks in one nite, breakfast great variety fresh cold pressed tasty juice every morning, service from all staff was ten out of ten, very funky hotel near light rail myers coffee shops QVB and more.. ."
