PB hotel design editorial

Two Sydney landmarks fused into a single address — the 1929 Gowings department store and the 1929 State Theatre, both heritage-listed Beaux-Arts and Gothic Revival piles on Market Street — give QT Sydney a structural identity that no amount of interior design budget could manufacture from scratch. Nic Graham oversaw the architectural conversion, completed in 2012, threading 200 rooms across nine floors through buildings whose bones resist conventional hotel planning at every turn. The result is a property where corridors surprise, rooms arrive in unexpected configurations, and heritage plasterwork coexists with deliberately provocative contemporary gesture. Stylist Shelley Indyk's interiors lean hard into theatricality, taking the State Theatre's show-business DNA as license for a maximalist palette that shifts register between room types. Some rooms carry dark-stained timber panelling salvaged from the Gowings fit-out, dressed with cobalt velvet armchairs and graphic printed cushions; others deploy teak-strip flooring, tan leather headboards and hexagonal patchwork rugs in crimson and khaki, with amber-lit display cabinets running the length of a wall like stage props. The hotel's most arresting space is the Gowings Bar and Grill dining corridor — its gilded vaulted ceiling, mosaic tile floor, bentwood bistro chairs and vintage circus posters preserved almost entirely intact — while the main restaurant above trades the heritage drama for warm saddle-leather tub chairs beneath a ceiling installation of suspended fabric forms.

"Had a fabulous 4 night stay in a king room at qt hotel Sydney. Been to Sydney 40+ times in the last 30 years so have tried a lot of the hotels in the cbd. This hotel checked a lot of my tick boxes starting with the early check in at 10am following a very early start on a red eye flight. Got a nice quiet room 614 facing qvb building. I got a room upgrade and room was very spacious. Got a great rate that included $40 per day f&b credit that I used to get breakfast at the downstairs Parlour restaurant. Food was really decent there and helped defray costs. Sydney is a very expensive city now when eating out The hotel has an edgy feel, somewhat moody lighting. If there were one thing I thought could be improved was the very dark light levels in the room. As I said this place checked a lot of my Wishlist especially the very central location in the heart of the Sydney shopping precinct. Summarised as follows: Location 5/5 couldn’t be more central Bed 5/5 seemed new Lift speed 5/5. Never a long wait Airport transfer 5/5 Wifi 5/5 Air con 5/5 Staff 5/5 have a can do attitude Room condition 4/5 - a little knocked around Lighting 3/5 - needs a light near the full length mirror Value 5/5 Will definitely prioritise this hotel for future stays in Sydney on the back of this very enjoyable stay. Additional tips I got the airport train to st james station and the hotel is a 5 minute walk from there. Nb there are some steps in the station so take an uber if you have lots of luggage. Cost $23 The reception is on level 1 so enter where the Parlour restaurant is on street level and take the elevator up."

"Beautiful, trendy hotel with a funky vibe. My room was gorgeous—quirky and fun decor, lots of natural light, and a huge, spa-like bathroom. Everything was art deco in the best way possible. Location was ideal and the employees were incredibly friendly. I also have to shout out the delicious room service I enjoyed during my first night here."

"Excellent stay from start to finish . Stayed for 4 nights. Reception staff professional and friendly throughout the stay. Very central and never needed to use private or public transport. Room was spacious and clean, spotless ! Comfy bed and had blackout curtains. We had room service a couple of times for breakfast which was excellent- very reasonably priced. I would recommend this hotel if you are staying in Sydney"

"Do you realise how it feels to not be given a free upgrade when the person before you got one? I used to always get upgrades here. It makes you feel not important and that you don't matter. I was going to give it a one star review but you got saved by the comfy beds, the fact that it is a lot easier to stream to the TV's since the last time I stayed and I couldn't hear much traffic or guests. Other hotels I have stayed at in Sydney do not offer streaming or have thin walls so I appreciate that. Plus bed was comfy despite being two double beds put together like most hotels in Sydney. Oh and having a cafe downstairs is much nicer than hotels like the Novotel that refuses to allow you to order a small breakfast and forces you to pay $40 for the buffet. But maybe I gt lucky and it was a quiet Sunday night. Pity about not being upgraded it would have made me definitely want to come back. But never say never."
