PB hotel design editorial

At the foot of the Getreidegasse in Salzburg's UNESCO-listed Altstadt, a building with documented roots stretching back over 700 years carries one of the city's more quietly radical hospitality concepts. Arthotel Blaue Gans — the name translates simply as Blue Goose, referencing the inn that has traded on this site since at least the fourteenth century — sets contemporary Austrian design directly against medieval fabric, without apology in either direction. The whitewashed five-storey facade, its arched carriage entrance and deep-set casement windows unchanged in their proportions for centuries, gives little away about what owner Andreas Gfall assembled inside when he reimagined the property in the early 2000s as a hotel-gallery hybrid displaying some 150 works of modern and contemporary art throughout its 35 rooms. The interior moves between registers that the building itself dictates. In the vaulted restaurant, exposed rubble-stone arches and original fresco fragments survive alongside white linen tablecloths and black iron chandeliers, the weight of the masonry doing the atmospheric work without any theatrical intervention. Guest rooms divide between two sensibilities visible in the images: older rooms retain exposed timber ceiling beams, wide-plank oak floors, and upholstered chairs in deep plum, while newer rooms favour dark walnut platform beds with integrated headboard shelving, grey Scandinavian wingback armchairs, and a cooler, more graphic palette. The herb-planted summer terrace, furnished with teak tables and powder-coated stacking chairs, anchors the property at street level in the rhythms of the old town around it.

Arthotel Blaue Gans Reviews

"We are currently nearly at the end of a nine day stay at the Blaue Ganz. We are having a very awesome time here. The room is extremely clean and the breakfasts are very yummy. The rooms are quite expensive. All staff are very helpful and I feel that I am able to ask for most things just by contacting reception. I would recommend this hotel because it has so many positives, location being one of them. Very enjoyable stay here in Salzburg. Vielen dank alle! 🙂"

"We stayed here for three nights at the beginning of March. Unfortunately they were carrying out maintenance work at the time and for two of our days the restaurant was closed and the morning buffet breakfast was changed to table service. However we were very well taken care of and every effort was made to make our stay as comfortable as possible. We were given an upgrade to a suite as a form of compensation. The room was lovely, quaint and olde worldly with plenty of space even though we were in the attic. The hotel itself was bang smack in the middle of the old town and oozing character. I would highly recommend a stay here. You may pay a little extra but you do get your money’s worth."

"We really enjoyed our stay here. The location is perfect, you step outside right onto the main pedestrianized shopping street (which is very attractive). The rooms are comfortable in a “quirky” way, with unusual furniture and plenty of modern art. It’s important to expect a “boutique” small hotel experience, definitely not a typical 5-star international chain hotel. Note that, in Austrian style, the double beds are actually two separate single beds pushed together, with two separate blankets/duvets. The service was friendly and helpful. There is a large secure parking garage a short walk away. We would come back here."
