PB hotel design editorial

Deep within Salzburg's UNESCO-protected Altstadt, where the narrow lane of Goldgasse has run beneath the Hohensalzburg fortress since medieval times, a building whose bones date back several centuries now contains one of the old city's most characterful small hotels. Hotel Goldgasse fits just 14 rooms across its historic fabric, the kind of compressed scale that forces a design team to be inventive rather than merely decorative. The exterior presents as a classic Salzburg burgher's house — cream render, arched timber entrance portal, wrought-iron scissor gates, and a pavement terrace laid with bistro chairs and white hydrangeas that arrives more Viennese café than Alpine lodge. The tension the property navigates most deftly is between its genuinely old structure and a contemporary interior language that never tries to disguise the collision. Some rooms sit beneath exposed timber-beam ceilings with wide-plank oak floors and vivid full-wall photographic murals drawn from Salzburg Festival performances — carnival costumes, masked figures, theatrical crowds rendered at monumental scale against crisp white bedding and crimson accent furniture. The restaurant leans harder into Alpine vernacular: raw timber ceiling joists, pine-panelled wainscoting, traditional carved chairs cushioned in graphic indigo fabric, and a mix of blown-glass and industrial pendant lights that keeps the atmosphere warm without drifting into kitsch. The outdoor terrace on the lane, furnished in teak and woven cord with table lamps glowing at midday, extends the hotel's easy, unselfconscious hospitality into the street itself.

"Our second visit to the Hotel Goldgasse, under the outstanding care of Ulrike, the hotel manager, was even better than our first visit. The Goldgasse is delightful in every way. An intimate hotel that blends modern amenities and comfort with old world quirks and charm, and is thoroughly deserving of its Michelin key. Rooms are named and themed on operas and are beautifully appointed. Service is warm, friendly and welcoming. The location is superb, right in the heat of the old town, making access to everywhere very easy. Breakfast, which is served in the Gasthof Goldgasse on the ground floor is delicious - no buffet here, thank goodness, your cold breakfast (pastries, cold meats, cheeses etc) is brought to you on a three tier stand while you place your order for your hot breakfast. (It is well worth booking for a dinner at the Gasthof Goldgasse - the food is excellent.) The Goldgasse is a true gem of a hotel, made uniquely special by Ulrike. We very much look forward to our third visit!"

"We had an amazing time during our recent stay at Hotel Goldgasse in Salzburg! Despite having some issues locating the hotel via car, the location turned out to be fantastic being within walking distance to all of the main sites and the Christmas markets. Our room was well appointed with windows opening to the street below but at no point was noise an issue. We were fortunate to dine in the hotel’s restaurant on two evenings and the food and service were fantastic. The sommelier made excellent wine recommendations on both evenings and the rest of the waitstaff was fun and personable. That being said, the true star of the hotel is Ulrike! She made our visit so special from the time we were lost trying to find the hotel until our departure. She has an amazing personality and she was so kind and warm that we wanted to spend more time with her. We cannot thank her enough for an amazing experience and memories that we will have forever. If you plan to visit Salzburg we highly recommend that you consider staying at this wonderful hotel!"

"This is our 2nd visit to this hotel, the location for the Christmas markets and old town is perfect, all so close to the hotel. The rooms are well appointed but the main reason we came back was the service from Ulrika, I really hope the ownership recognizes her hard work and appreciation for how well she represents the hotel and makes each guest feel special. I neglected to get the name of the gentleman (from Mallorca) who I believe is the restaurant manager during the day, but he was very welcoming, friendly and attentive. Such a great experience, thank you."

"Ulrike, the caretaker - is so friendly and helpful that this small yet warm and cozy historic hotel becomes such an authentic ‘Austrian’ experience in a very good way. My wife and I were there for the Christmas markets which were literally a one-minute walk from the hotel. Ulrike is always close by and ensures that all guests are pleased at all times. Breakfast is lovely and we also tried their Michelin-rated restaurant one night which we found to be quite good and not very expensive. The hotel is centrally located in the Old Town of Salzburg and ideal for visiting all the main sites. We also went on ‘The Original Sound of Music’ Tour which we really enjoyed and was a 15 minute walk away from the hotel. I highly recommend the hotel - we will stay here again when we return."
