PB hotel design editorial

Facing the formal gardens of Mirabell Palace — one of Salzburg's great Baroque set pieces, where Mozart once performed and The Sound of Music filmed its famous Do-Re-Mi sequence — a creamy late nineteenth-century Gründerzeit building carries the Hyperion Hotel Salzburg behind a facade of rusticated stonework, deeply modeled window surrounds, and a balustraded cornice that holds its own against its illustrious neighbor. The building's bones are pure imperial Austria: high ceilings, generous floor-to-ceiling windows that pull the garden greenery inside, and proportions that no contemporary hotel build could replicate or afford. The interiors strike a considered negotiation between that historical envelope and a deliberately contemporary fit-out. Guest rooms layer damask-patterned feature wallpapers in silver and blue against dark engineered-timber floors, the tufted sapphire velvet sofas and globe floor lamps introducing a mid-century warmth that keeps the scheme from tipping into period pastiche. Framed black-and-white portraits of Mozart appear throughout — a knowing rather than reverential nod to the city's most marketable son, made explicit in the restaurant with a graphic #MOZART print that signals the hotel's awareness of its own cultural context. The bar advances a different register entirely: dark marble surfaces and brass shelving units give way to a chinoiserie mural of herons and blossoming branches in Prussian blue, the hanging cluster lights above the counter drawing the eye through the length of the room.

"Wonderful hotel in every way. It is extremely well located right across the street from Mirabell Gardens. It is a 10 to 15 minute walk to the old part of town. The room I had on the first floor was spacious, clean and well appointed. The daily restocked mini bar is a very nice amenity. I would in particular like to acknowledge and thank one of the staff members- concierge- whose name is Dieter. I had a bit of an issue on the first night and he really went above and beyond the call of duty and helped me. He’s a major asset to the hotel."

"Great location, however that was the best thing about the hotel. We booked this hotel for a double birthday celebration, no effort made to make our stay special. It advertised an Executive Lounge which we always enjoy. On arrival I asked about it and they said it was closed, even though it was still being advertised on the hotel information channel?! Very disappointed, they gave us some vouchers for limited range of drinks to use at the bar and offered a free mini bar that they restocked everyday, this contained soft drinks and a couple of beers, not good! The room was very clean, but be warned there is no space for any clothes, accessories etc, a couple of hangers in a small wardrobe that was it. No draws on side tables, ridiculous! We were in a junior suite. The hotel had a nice touch putting out lovely fresh chocolates in the lounge area, this lasted two days and then they replaced them with cheap chocolate celebrations, cheap! The staff were very helpful and charming. The Restaurant we wouldn’t recommend, terrible menu, hence it being empty every night. Overall we found a lot of discrepancies with the hotel, however the staff were wonderful. We wouldn’t of stayed there if we had been informed beforehand that the E-lounge had been closed. Ate at neighbouring hotels for better menus and an overall better vibe and atmosphere!"

"The hotel was disappointing, mainly because of the service. The staff does not meet European 5-star standards. The staff’s service approach seems more aligned with non-European hospitality standards, which resulted in a noticeable gap in service quality. Requests were often ignored or not fulfilled, and billing mistakes occurred — we were charged twice per day for our puppy, which staff did not seem to find unusual. Although it was stated that a dog bed, bowl, and treats would be provided, we received nothing. Breakfast was also poor, with very limited choice for a 5-star hotel. The only positives were the possibility to park in the inner courtyard and the location close to the Old Town."
