PB hotel design editorial

Facing the formal gardens of Mirabell Palace — one of Salzburg's great Baroque set pieces, where Mozart once performed and The Sound of Music filmed its famous Do-Re-Mi sequence — a creamy late nineteenth-century Gründerzeit building carries the Hyperion Hotel Salzburg behind a facade of rusticated stonework, deeply modeled window surrounds, and a balustraded cornice that holds its own against its illustrious neighbor. The building's bones are pure imperial Austria: high ceilings, generous floor-to-ceiling windows that pull the garden greenery inside, and proportions that no contemporary hotel build could replicate or afford. The interiors strike a considered negotiation between that historical envelope and a deliberately contemporary fit-out. Guest rooms layer damask-patterned feature wallpapers in silver and blue against dark engineered-timber floors, the tufted sapphire velvet sofas and globe floor lamps introducing a mid-century warmth that keeps the scheme from tipping into period pastiche. Framed black-and-white portraits of Mozart appear throughout — a knowing rather than reverential nod to the city's most marketable son, made explicit in the restaurant with a graphic #MOZART print that signals the hotel's awareness of its own cultural context. The bar advances a different register entirely: dark marble surfaces and brass shelving units give way to a chinoiserie mural of herons and blossoming branches in Prussian blue, the hanging cluster lights above the counter drawing the eye through the length of the room.

"The hotel was disappointing, mainly because of the service. The staff does not meet European 5-star standards. The staff’s service approach seems more aligned with non-European hospitality standards, which resulted in a noticeable gap in service quality. Requests were often ignored or not fulfilled, and billing mistakes occurred — we were charged twice per day for our puppy, which staff did not seem to find unusual. Although it was stated that a dog bed, bowl, and treats would be provided, we received nothing. Breakfast was also poor, with very limited choice for a 5-star hotel. The only positives were the possibility to park in the inner courtyard and the location close to the Old Town."

"We booked two rooms for three nights beginning Christmas eve. We stayed with my family of four. The hotel is very nice and it was very clean. We had a car and were able to park on site for 30 euro daily. We booked far in advance for dinner in Christmas eve knowing that many restaurants would be closed and thinking that the hotel would offer a lovely dining experience, unfortunately we were sorely disappointed. First, we sat in the bar area for drinks. The bartender took our order and after 15 minutes still no drinks then he returned to us and asked us to repeat our order which we did. He clearly had no business behind the bar as he had no idea how to make drinks. We then waited for thirty minutes for our drinks which were not properly made. We observed many other patrons having the same experience. We then went in for our reservation at 630. Our waitress was very sweet and tried her best but it was a terrible experience. We waited over an hour before getting any food. We asked for bread because we were starving and were told they would be baking some more. Our dinners were served about 90 minutes after ordering. There was no management staff checking on diners and clearly everyone in the restaurant was having the same experience. We did complain to the apparent restaurant manager who then comped our drinks but offered no explanations or real customer service. It was appalling that a restaurant of this caliber chose to open when they clearly had insufficient staff and poorly trained staff. So my advice would be to stay at the hotel but avoid the bar and restaurant."

"We chose the Hyperion in Salzburg expecting a seamless 5-star experience, but unfortunately the service fell well below that standard, especially considering the price point. To begin with, there was no barista coffee available, only a machine. While not a dealbreaker on its own, it set the tone for what felt like a more limited offering than expected at this level. The biggest issue throughout our stay was housekeeping. On our first day, the room still hadn’t been serviced by the time we returned at 4pm, and this continued for the duration of our stay. On one occasion, we called and were told someone was on their way immediately. We waited downstairs in the lobby lounge for over an hour, returned to our room, and no one had come and nothing had been started. After this, the lady at reception promised she would organise a morning clean for the next day, which we really appreciated at the time, but unfortunately it didn’t happen either. Over a three-night stay, our room was cleaned only once, and that clean wasn’t done until after 4pm. We were also surprised to find the hotel charges to deliver ice to the room, which feels highly unusual for a property positioning itself as 5-star. Finally, we specifically chose a hotel (rather than an apartment) for convenience, particularly because we expected access to a laundry service. However, we were informed that laundry is not offered all year, and our entire stay had no laundry service available, which was disappointing and inconvenient. Overall, the location is great, but the service and basic hotel operations were not consistent with a luxury experience. We wanted to love this stay, but we left feeling frustrated and let down."

"A wonderful hotel in the heart of the city, housed in a former palace. Comfortable bed, good breakfast, and private parking (35 euros, requires advance reservation). We enjoyed our stay and would happily stay here again."
