PB hotel design editorial

Perched on a private peninsula jutting into the glacial turquoise waters of the Fuschlsee, a fifteenth-century hunting castle that once served as a summer retreat for the Prince-Archbishops of Salzburg now carries the name Rosewood Schloss Fuschl. The property's history is as layered as the Salzkammergut landscape surrounding it — confiscated by the Nazis during the Second World War, later used by Joachim von Ribbentrop, then reborn as a grand hotel in the 1950s before its most recent transformation under Rosewood's stewardship. The castle's steep conical tower and rendered baroque facades, visible in the aerial view, have been preserved intact, while a sensitive expansion introduced additional guest accommodation within chalet-style structures arranged across the wooded grounds. The interiors, handled with quiet confidence, balance the castle's aristocratic bones against a warmer, more contemporary sensibility — amber-toned wood paneling, brass stirrup-form pendant lights, herringbone parquet, and upholstered sitting areas in burnt orange and tobacco that draw as much from the Austrian hunting lodge tradition as from modern hospitality design. The greenhouse-style restaurant, its roof clad in pale timber slats and its walls dissolved into dark-framed glazing, frames the lake and forest as though they were the primary decoration. Boathouse rooms open directly to the water, exposed rafters overhead and folding French doors giving onto timber balconies where the Fuschlsee fills the entire horizon. The infinity pool terrace, lined with teak-decked loungers and draped cabanas, extends the property's edge toward the treeline.

"I was a little worried booking the property given several negative reviews, but we were really pleased with our stay. It's a beautiful property in a beautiful setting. Room was clean and well appointed. Only gripe is the thermostat didn't seem to want to stay below 70 degrees at night. The hotel seemed slightly short-staffed, which I assumed was because of the season, but they managed well. Spa was beautiful and well maintained. I would definitely return to the property."

"We, a couple, spent a weekend to relax and celebrate an anniversary. Hotel: luxurious room with wonderful sights over the Fuschl lake. Friendly reception with a glass of sparkling wine- usual in this kind of hotels. Service at reception: a friend of my wife had sent a parcel with a gift to be delivered on Saturday. No parcel was handed over on Saturday. Upon checking out on Sunday we again insisted that a parcel had been sent in for us. Two or three managers came and searched everywhere- and finally found the gift for my wife. We missed their expression of regret… Restaurant on Saturday: a nice table was allocated to us at the window overlooking the lake. To start with I expressed our interest in ordering champagne, and had to wait some 15 minutes before the wine menu was brought. Further 15 minutes elapsed before the bottle Bollinger was brought. It was not cold enough and had to go back… The waiter was kind enough to bring two complimentary (thank you) glasses of a chilled bottle of Bollinger that apparently was at the hotel bar… 20 minutes later our bottle arrived perfectly tempered! We had ordered the multi course gourmet menu to celebrate our special day and very much enjoyed the amuse gueule and the two starters perfectly presented and served. BUT then waited 30-35 minutes and nobody took care of us. After 40 (!) minutes I discreetly stood up and went to the back of the restaurant to speak to the F&B manger in duty. I expressed our disappointment in being abandoned after two courses of our gourmet meal. She promised to take care and also apologised for the warm champagne (very professional). During the next 90 minutes everything went smoothly. We enjoyed each of the courses, our drinks and the relaxed atmosphere (finally !) of the wonderfully placed table. At the moment of signing the bill, the duty manager again appeared to repeat her apologies and offered to remove the cost of the champagne from our bill… An unexpected situation which we very much appreciated (although we would have preferred to enjoy a 100% perfect evening). Breakfast: food is located on various buffet areas distributed over several rooms communicating via staircases. Very unorganised and with far too low light levels. We had nice weather and optioned to have our breakfast on the terrace. A bad decision as apparently waiters avoid the terrace levels.. we had to go inside to order coffee, tea, juice- and often twice because our order was forgotten… overall, our impression was that the staff was inexperienced, untrained and, worse, unmotivated… what a shame after reading the promises given on the hotel’s homepage."

"This was our second stay at this hotel. Our first visit was right when it opened and once again we were absolutely delighted. The location right on the lake is simply stunning and makes the whole stay truly special. The castle itself is beautiful, full of wonderful details and impressive oil paintings, and the lake is so clean and crystal clear. Whether by the lake or in the castle, the food was consistently very good and prepared with great care. The seating, both by the lake and in the restaurant, is also very comfortable – a detail that makes dining here even more enjoyable. The staff, both by the lake and in the castle restaurant, were always very friendly and welcoming. A special thank you goes to Iwa. Even though the hotel was fully booked, she made it possible for us to extend our stay. Her attentiveness and warmth truly impressed us and made our holiday even more enjoyable."

"My husband and I came from the Rosewood Vienna to the Rosewood Schloss Fuschl for our honeymoon in September 2025. I realize that some of these comments may come across as pretentious; however, we are seasoned Four Seasons and Rosewood clients, and are more than happy to pay for expected high end service but by comparison, this hotel fell short of expectations on a lot of levels. Location: The setting and location are stunning. If you are checking into this hotel for a quiet, lakeside retreat with water and hiking opportunities, it may be for you; however, it should be noted that it is a solid 30min from downtown Salzburg and a 75 Euro ONE WAY Uber/Private car service so if you are interested in exploring the city or going out to dinner, that should be taken into serious consideration if you choose to stay here. There is no car service or shuttle offered by the hotel (perhaps they should consider this). Rooms: We stayed in one of the suites. The view from our room was spectacular. We loved that we could actually fully open the windows and enjoy the view, scenery and fresh air. The rooms were kept clean - absolutely no issues there. The bed was generally hard, although the linens and pillows, lovely. The TV was temperamental and the steamer didn't work. There was no hand soap - just Body Wash. In the evening for turn down service, they left water but no local sweet or offering. Dining / Bar: The food was excellent. We did not dine in the main dining room, but breakfast and the bar fare were excellent. Our biggest complaint/disappointment and where this hotel fell seriously short was the service. The bar doesn't open until 4pm and the See Club by the water was never open so if you get back from a hike or back from down town in the early afternoon, you're SOL until 5pm (when we sat down at 4pm, bartender said he wasn't ready and they open at 5pm...). We are bar eaters. A good and personable bartender can elevate any experience. The main bartender was inattentive and unobservant. The girl he had that was working under him / apprenticing (who was clearly completely unqualified for the job) was lovely but he was frankly horrible to her and of no help, which left her visibly spinning. Also - all the junior servers wore oversized polo shirts, which frankly looked unprofessional. At breakfast when we asked for juice, we were told we could get it ourselves. We're abled bodied, but this is a pretty stark contrast to other RW/FS experiences we have had. The a la carte breakfast options are slim and the buffet average in comparison so you end up mostly serving yourself anyway. I could go on but I think I hit on the most notable points. Value: Again, we are fortunate and are happy to pay for higher star hotels and these things come with a certain level of expected service, but this one fell short - Especially, coming directly from RW Vienna and the FS Budapest and the WA Amsterdam, which were all Phenomenal in every way. It was 5 star prices for a location that is unbelievable but the lack of quality service takes away from the experience as a whole."
