PB hotel design editorial

Deep in the Tyrolean forest above St. Anton am Arlberg, where spruce-covered slopes press close enough to dust the eaves with snow, a family-run property has spent decades refining what it means to be genuinely alpine rather than merely alpine-themed. Hotel Tannenhof achieves this through material honesty — the heavy timber balconies and white-rendered façade visible from the snow-blanketed terrace are structural expressions of regional building tradition, not decorative overlay, with reclaimed larch and aged pine deployed across both exterior framing and interior wall cladding in a way that gives the building its characteristic warmth and grain. Inside, the interiors navigate the familiar tension between rustic authenticity and contemporary comfort with more confidence than most properties in the Arlberg tend to manage. Bedrooms pair deep-buttoned upholstered headboards — one in charcoal wool, another in dusty rose velvet — against honey-toned pine plank walls, the contrast sharpened by silver-legged baroque-influenced bedside tables that introduce a note of Tyrolean Baroque without tipping into kitsch. The restaurant ceiling is the room's most considered gesture: a coffered panel of whitened timber inlaid with gilt detailing, drawing on the painted wooden ceilings of traditional Tyrolean Stuben while reading at a scale suited to a formal dining room. The spa pool, lined with grey slate-effect stone and lit by floor-to-ceiling glazing onto the winter forest, brings the same material logic underground — stripped back, quietly confident, framed by the landscape it sits within.

"We had the most amazing hotel stay ever! From the very first moment, we were warmly welcomed by the wonderful hosts and staff – even Heidi, the adorable hotel dog, greeted us with excitement. Every single detail was carefully thought through and taken care of – often before we even realized we needed something! One of the absolute highlights was the cuisine. The chef impressed us not only with his culinary skills but also with his ability to recommend the perfect dish – whether it was a comforting meal after a long day of skiing or the unforgettable 2 Michelin-starred tasting menu. That tasting menu was a true explosion of flavors – a must-try! Our suite was pure luxury – spacious, beautifully designed, and incredibly comfortable. The fireplace was the perfect way to wind down after a cold day outdoors, and the outdoor jacuzzi in the spa area made it even more special. The wellness area is surprisingly large for such an intimate hotel, and the massages were absolutely spot on. The hotel’s location is ideal – you can start hiking or tobogganing right from the doorstep (don’t miss the charming hut behind the hotel!), and the village is just a short, scenic walk away. The panoramic views from the terrace are breathtaking! A special mention goes to the hotel’s private shuttle service. The drivers went above and beyond – even walking us into the rental store to ensure everything was perfect. This level of care made the whole experience seamless and stress-free. We will definitely come back and are already recommending this hidden gem to all of our friends. Thank you for an unforgettable stay!"

"From the food, to service, to the environment The Tannenhof Hotel screams tranquility. Having experienced their 6 course set menu during the winter of 24/25. I cannot speak more highly of their culinary experience. Each course carefully crafted with delicate yet explosive flavour. The devil is in the detail and the Tannenhof will seduce you with cocktails and wines. Dog Friendly? More like Dog Heaven! His own bed provided and with every course, a treat for my Mudi friend was delivered by their lovely staff. Summer is no different, Negroni's are flowing, food is flourishing. Their terrace transports you to the true serenity of the Austrian Alps. An experience which should not be missed with competitive pricing for the memories you're left with."

"I have stayed in dozens of 5 star hotels around the world and have never written a review, positive or negative; however, this time I felt compelled to write one. From the moment we walked in and throughout our stay we were treated almost like being part of the family. The food was outstanding, the amenities clean, organized and the attention to detail was phenomenal. I highly recommend this place and will definitely be coming back"

"We visited the restaurant at Tannenhof. The food was amazing. Everything was beautifully served and very tasteful. Tried everything from fish, veal, entrecôte, vegetarian. Everything was a great experience. The waitress, Beatrix, made the experience even better. Great service, good wine pairing. Prices very reasonable."
