PB hotel design editorial

Reclaimed Alpine timber, aged to the silver-brown of centuries-old barns, forms the entire exterior skin of Severin's The Alpine Retreat — a material choice that instantly distinguishes the property from the rendered white facades that dominate Lech am Arlberg's village streetscape. The four-storey building, clad in salvaged Altholz and dressed with deep balconies running the full width of each floor, carries the visual weight of a traditional Vorarlberg farmhouse scaled up rather than a purpose-built hotel, which was precisely the intention. The Tyrolean mountain backdrop and deep snow load visible on the roofline only reinforce how deliberately the architecture defers to its setting. Inside, the same reclaimed timber lines walls and beamed ceilings throughout, but the interiors introduce a counterpoint that prevents the property from becoming a heritage pastiche. Guest rooms range between two registers: some finished in pale linen upholstery and soft grey wool with light-filled balcony glazing, others pushed toward a darker palette — charcoal button-tufted headboards reaching full ceiling height, freestanding cast iron soaking tubs positioned against the windows, dark chocolate cushioning against aged pine. The restaurant anchors its Tyrolean character around a monumental black-glazed Kachelofen tile stove while seating guests in contemporary navy velvet dining chairs beneath Tom Dixon-style copper pendant lights. The spa descends into a moodier register still, with dark slate cladding the pool walls and LED strip lighting tracing the waterline — a grounding contrast to the timber warmth above.

Severin's, The Alpine Retreat Reviews

"My husband and I stayed here for 3 days, and we are already counting down the days until we can come back. From the moment we arrived, everything exceeded our expectations. The food was truly incredible! Every meal felt like an experience. The four-course dinners were not only delicious but beautifully presented, with so much attention to detail in every dish. What really made the stay unforgettable, though, was the staff. Everyone was so warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. You can tell they care deeply about creating a special experience for their guests. This place is something special, and we can’t wait to return."

"From the moment we arrived at Severins Alpine Retreat, it was immediately clear that this was not just a luxury resort, but a place rooted in genuine warmth and hospitality. Even before stepping inside, we were greeted by staff who introduced themselves and welcomed us with such sincerity that it truly felt like coming home. Instead of a traditional front desk check-in, we were ushered into a beautiful living-room-like space with a crackling fire, invited to sit down, and offered a beverage of our choice. The check-in process felt relaxed, personal, and unhurried. Shortly after, the chef came out to introduce himself and brought a small snack he had created especially for us — an incredibly thoughtful and memorable touch. We were given a tour of the property, and with only two other families staying at the time, the experience felt wonderfully intimate and private. The spa facilities are exceptional, with multiple saunas, a beautiful pool, and peaceful spaces designed for true relaxation. I was even encouraged to take a later train on departure day so I could continue enjoying the spa and amenities after checkout, which speaks volumes about the level of care and flexibility offered. Dining at Severins was nothing short of exquisite. Having a dedicated table for the duration of the stay created a sense of comfort and belonging. Every dish was creative, beautifully presented, and full of surprising, well-balanced flavors. Ending the evening with homemade chocolates and sweets was the perfect final touch. What stood out most, however, was how the staff made me feel. Their kindness, attentiveness, and openness gave me a renewed sense of humanity and reminded me how powerful true hospitality can be. Marc, who was our primary point of contact, went above and beyond — including providing a hand-drawn map and personal recommendations when he learned I wanted to visit the Matterhorn. This stay was truly spectacular from start to finish and one I will never forget."

"Absolutely divine! We loved our cozy and well appointed room with views for miles. Most of all, we loved the food - thank you Marius. Each course was planned to perfection - we looked forward to each meal so much. Also the homemade chocolates after dinner were perfection. Walking into town on the forest path was sublime. Amazing stay - thanks to all the staff who couldn't do enough to take care of us."
