PB hotel design editorial

Directly across from the Upper Belvedere palace gardens, where Vienna's imperial heritage sits most visibly in the landscape, a new-build tower clad in pale stone and arched glazing announced a confident contemporary gesture when Andaz Vienna Am Belvedere opened in 2018. The building, designed by local architectural practice Henke Schreieck Architekten, rises seventeen floors above the third district, its facade articulated by rounded window arches that nod — without replicating — to the baroque vocabulary of the neighbourhood. A dramatically cantilevered entrance canopy, its triangulated concrete soffit supported on slender columns, pulls arrivals in from street level through planted terraces. The 303 rooms were conceived by Vienna-based studio TTAD, which threaded the city's cultural identity through the interiors using large-format wall murals printed with ghostly monochrome interpretations of Viennese architectural engravings — palace arcades, ornate ceiling panels — set against warm walnut joinery, herringbone oak floors, and mid-century-leaning furniture in cognac leather and steel blue upholstery. The rooftop bar, wrapped in floor-to-ceiling glazing, trades on its elevation: teak decking, raw timber stump tables, and suspended bird sculptures animate a space where the Ringstrasse monuments and the Prater's tree canopy stretch to the horizon on clear days. The tension between Vienna's dense historical legacy and the hotel's deliberately modern frame is never quite resolved — which is, ultimately, what makes it interesting.

"We stayed a the hotel for the Eurovision week. While a little out of the city center, it is super convenient to get just about anywhere in under 20 minutes via trams and trains. The hotel was exceptionally clean, and the room was well appointed. Would stay there again."

"A huge shout out to Thi Dung Bui who checked us in. Despite being busy at the front desk, I noticed how she made sure to treat each guest with proper time needed to check in and not rush the process. She also acknowledged the Discoverist status and the room was really contemporary and clean. The property is also located at a good location."

"Dear team, I would like to share some honest feedback regarding my recent stay, as someone who has stayed at Andaz Vienna multiple times in the past and genuinely loved the hotel. What always made Andaz Vienna special to me was its unique boutique atmosphere, attention to detail, warmth, and the feeling that everything was thoughtfully curated. Unfortunately, during this stay, I felt that some of this special touch was missing. I would like to clarify that on one of the days, I personally requested that my room would not be serviced, so the room itself not being cleaned was not the issue. However, afterwards I only requested a simple refill of coffee and drinks for the following morning, and unfortunately this was not done either. In addition, on my checkout day, I specifically requested after breakfast that assistance with luggage and checkout be arranged around 10:00, as I needed to leave on time to collect my rental car. Unfortunately, this request was completely forgotten, and only after I approached reception myself and asked what happened with the bellboy/luggage assistance, I was told: “We forgot.” As a result, I came very close to being late for my car pickup and potentially being charged for an additional rental day. Beyond these operational issues, I also felt that the overall atmosphere and attention to detail are no longer quite at the same level I remembered from previous stays. The breakfast still appeared visually similar, but it no longer felt as refined, carefully maintained, and special as it once did. In the past, breakfast at Andaz Vienna truly felt exceptional. More generally, the hotel now feels more aligned with a Regency-style standard rather than the distinctive Andaz concept I previously experienced. I also personally feel that some of the newer flashing lighting elements in the lobby, which perhaps are intended to create a more modern or Instagram-style atmosphere, unfortunately make the space feel less elegant and somewhat cheaper in character compared to the sophisticated atmosphere the hotel once had. I am sharing this feedback honestly because I truly appreciated this hotel for many years, and I sincerely hope that during future stays I will once again experience the warm boutique feeling, thoughtful touches, and refined atmosphere that originally made Andaz Vienna so special. Warm regards, Anat Naveh Angerholzer von Tannenforst"
