PB hotel design editorial

Built in 1863 as the private palace of Duke Philipp of Württemberg, the building on the Ringstrasse that became Hotel Imperial has never quite shed its aristocratic origins — nor has it tried to. Architect Arnold Zanetti designed it in a Viennese Historicist manner that mirrored the grand boulevard ambitions of Emperor Franz Joseph's city-wide reconstruction project, and the conversion to hotel use in 1873, timed to receive dignitaries attending the Vienna World Exhibition, simply transferred one form of ceremony for another. The facade's pediment frieze, the rusticated piano nobile, and the symmetrical window articulation visible in the images project the same civic authority today as they did when Richard Wagner and later Adolf Hitler claimed it as their preferred Vienna address. Inside, the Imperial's 138 rooms and suites maintain an atmosphere rooted firmly in the Austro-Hungarian court aesthetic — Bohemian crystal chandeliers suspended from coffered and stucco ceilings, walls wrapped in silk damask in deep cobalt and powder blue, gilded Louis XVI-style case furniture set against custom Axminster carpets. The double-height marble hall, clad in veined white and sienna stone with Corinthian pilasters and an elaborate parquet floor of walnut and fruitwood, anchors the ground floor as a true piano nobile reception room rather than a hotel lobby. The restaurant's sienna marble arched walls and intricate plaster ceiling coffers, hung with tiered crystal chandeliers, complete a sequence of interiors that function less as hospitality spaces than as a preserved record of Habsburg spatial ambition.

"Just **wow**. I'm happy to say this hotel lived up to all of my expectations while in Vienna for the first time. We wanted an elegant, European, fancy, comfortable, well located hotel for our two-day say and this is exactly what we got. Aside from the "imperial" atmosphere, the manager and staff were simply exceptional. Anita Baur, the assistant front office manager was a gem, so friendly and informative, always helpful to provide information. Highlights for us were the elegant and comfortable rooms, the turndown service, the small details like water and chocolates. We had drinks several times in the lobby bar which was elegant and our friends were surprised to have one of the best margaritas made by an Italian bartender - cheers to her and the hotel!"

"We stayed three nights at the Hotel Imperial in Vienna. We had a deluxe king room. Aside from just a couple quirks, we loved this property. The location was excellent, our room very quiet and relaxing, the excellent staff friendly and accommodating. Our large room was beautifully decorated in fitting with the Imperial’s architectural style and history. Our bed and pillows were very comfy (perhaps the mattress could use a replacement sooner rather than later, but we still slept great.) We appreciated the updated bedside clock that included a USB port and a wireless charger. We didn’t use the mini bar but they also had a complimentary individual sized coffee maker and kettle with teas and as many complimentary bottles of water as you wanted. It was lovely to sit at the room’s little table with the window behind us drinking a coffee in the morning! The marble bathroom was beautiful with a large tub and double vanities; our only complaint was that the water pressure in the shower could have been a bit stronger (this may have been because we were on a higher floor and of course it’s an older building.) The turndown service and the little welcome treats were terrific! We made use of the gym a couple times – they have some older but still serviceable TechnoGym cardio equipment, a bunch of dumbbells, a bench, one of those multi-exercise pulley system weight machines, and a little alcove where you can do yoga or stretching. We did not use it, but a nice bonus is a sauna. We didn’t have time to have a drink or snack at the bar – it would’ve been fun to hear the jazz performers on one of the nights we were there, oh well. We were on the fence about whether or not to splurge for the breakfast in the café but in the end decided not to, mainly because we had an afternoon pastry and coffee in the café upon arrival while we waited for our room to be ready. Our apple strudel was limp from presumably being reheated in a microwave, the coffee lukewarm, and we had to call a second waiter over for the check after waiting (no exaggeration) fifteen minutes after the first one either forgot or decided it wasn’t his table to deal with. That lackluster experience really was the only disappointing part of our stay. All in all, we adored the Hotel Imperial and would definitely recommend this property to anyone wanting to stay in Vienna’s Innere Stadt."

"Ilker Checked us in and was very helpful and informative. He even walked us to our room, very politely. I also spoke to the director of rooms, Sebastian, and had a pleasant conversation. The hotel is breathtaking and one I will absolutely return to. Sebastian shared details about a hotel tour they offer each morning. It will certainly be hard to top this one!"
