PB hotel design editorial

Mariahilfer Strasse, Vienna's long commercial spine running from the Ringstrasse toward the western rail terminus, was never considered the city's most glamorous address — which made it the right place for Hotel Motto to plant its particular flag when it opened in 2021. The Neoclassical street facade, with its rusticated stone base, arched entrance portal, and wave-pattern bronze canopy, gives little away about what happens at the top of the building, where architect Carla Lo added a dramatic faceted glass rooftop structure that opens into a botanical bar-restaurant suspended in daylight, hanging ferns cascading from a brass oval rail above an oval oak-and-brass bar. The contrast is entirely intentional: a nineteenth-century shell with a thoroughly contemporary crown. Interior designer Sigi Mayer brought the rooms into conversation with both registers. The grander courtyard-facing rooms carry herringbone parquet, Venetian plaster walls in warm ochre and sand, emerald velvet sofas, and crystal chandeliers alongside Morris-inspired wallpaper panels — the atmosphere closer to a well-loved Viennese apartment than a hotel category. Courtyard-level rooms strike a different note: steel-framed glazing, open vanity consoles in patinated brass, and original artworks referencing Berlin Wall graffiti bring an almost loft-like rawness that sits in productive friction with the fringe-trimmed umbrellas and iron café chairs of the rooftop terrace above, where the whole city spreads out in every direction.

"we stayed in Hotel Motto in early June. It is in the 6th district, right on the Mariahilfestrasse which is the main shopping street. the historic centre is district one and accessible in a 15 minute walk. The hotel arranged our transport from the airport, with a fixed taxi rate. We were greeted with a welcome drink of Austrian Sekt, which was delicious and a lovely touch. I had booked a junior suite, in which you could self cater if you wished. It had a roll top bath over looking the city, a lovely seated area and cocktail bar aside from the mini bar. The decor was sumptuous and bohemian. The perfect romantic setting for our third mini moon! The building is historic and the decor quirky but attractive. There is a roof top bar where we had a drink overlooking vienna’s rooftops We ate that night in chez bernard the hotel restaurant. The menu had excellent choices and well priced, my husband had a chateau briand for one for 46 euros and I had mussels. The wine list was excellent and keenly priced. We enjoyed a bottle of domane wachau gruner veltliner. you could also bring a bottle of champagne or wine to your room and get 20 percent off! We did not book breakfast but the hotel has its own bakery cafe where we enjoyed coffee and baked rolls with ham and salad and mustard. The staff were excellent and helped us with any information and requests. I thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. I would certainly stay again and recommend it to friends and family . The only quibble and it is a small one, there was only the choice of two beers weisse beer and dunkel ,no helles beer. The addition of helles beer to the drinks menu would make all the difference. But Hotel Motto is very much part of what makes Vienna both memorable and magical!"

"Absolutely loved our stay at Motto Hotel. The room was impeccable—beautifully designed, not the obvious “luxury hotel” style, but with so much personality and great taste. It felt unique and incredibly comfortable. The shower was excellent, and the AC was absolutely blasting (in the best way possible), which made all the difference during the heat wave when temperatures hit 40°C. The location is fantastic: the metro is literally steps away, and there are great shops, cafés, and restaurants all around. The service was super friendly and genuinely helpful throughout our stay. A special mention to the restaurant: the food was so, so good, and the atmosphere is exactly what we love—cozy, chic, lively without being loud. We ended up eating there more than once because we enjoyed it that much. Would definitely stay here again. Our favorite hotel from this trip."

"Really enjoyed my stay at Hotel Motto. The welcome was warm, the room was cozy and beautifully designed, and the location was perfect for exploring Vienna. (right next to subway station) I especially loved the rooftop terrace (amazing view) and dinner at Chez Bernard. The hotel has a stylish atmosphere but still feels comfortable and relaxed. As a woman traveler, I felt very comfortable throughout my stay and would definitely come back."
