PB hotel design editorial

Tucked into Vienna's Spittelberg quarter, where the Ringstrasse-era facades of the seventh district give way to a denser, more intimate streetscape, a late nineteenth-century Gründerzeit building was transformed in 2013 into Sans Souci Wien — a 63-room property that attempts something genuinely difficult: holding Viennese historicism and contemporary art in the same room without either overwhelming the other. The renovation, led with the interior concept developed in close collaboration with the owning Weißbacher family, preserved the building's arched street-level arcade, white stucco cornice work, and generous ceiling heights while threading through an art collection that runs to Roy Lichtenstein prints hung above tufted velvet headboards and gestural canvases lining the walls of La Veranda restaurant. The guest rooms layer herringbone parquet, Persian-inflected rugs, and curved mid-century lounge chairs alongside four-poster beds in dark walnut — a deliberate collision of registers that feels more like a well-edited private apartment than a category exercise in boutique hotel design. Downstairs, the barrel-vaulted pool is one of the more quietly theatrical spaces in Viennese hospitality: pale stone cladding, a soft aquamarine ceiling, and crystal chandeliers suspended above the water in a configuration that manages ceremony without pomposity. The restaurant floor carries laser-cut brass medallion inlays across dark hardwood, lit by tiered crystal pendant lights — details that anchor the contemporary furniture in a decorative language the building itself understands.

"First, the location couldn’t be better … right across from the museum plaza, easy access to the convenient public transportation system and walking distance to many places. The building is lovely. Our room was well appointed, even with a Dyson hair dryer! The bed was very comfortable and they have a pillow menu. The breakfast was superior.. you can order from a menu or enjoy a full buffet. But it’s the people who put it over the top. Friendly, helpful, and accommodating in all ways."

"I stayed at Hotel Sans Souci Wien following a work trip in Vienna and extended my stay for personal travel. Overall, the hotel was pleasant, but the experience did not fully meet the level of service or luxury I expected. Upon arrival, there did not appear to be consistently available bell staff to assist with luggage, which meant managing multiple bags on my own. Check-in was also slower than anticipated, and while I waited for my room to be prepared, several guests who arrived after me were checked in and escorted to their rooms before I was. The room itself was comfortable and nicely maintained, but I would describe it as average rather than exceptional. While the hotel is certainly nice, I did not find the accommodations particularly memorable or distinctly luxurious compared to other properties at a similar price point. My experience with the spa staff was disappointing. I found them to be less accommodating and less welcoming than expected, with limited flexibility or effort to assist. In a hotel positioning itself as an upscale experience, guest interactions in wellness spaces matter just as much as those at reception. That said, one standout was a bellman, who I believe was named Nicholas. He was consistently warm, greeted me throughout my stay, remembered my name, and provided one of the few truly personalised hospitality experiences I had at the property. Small gestures like that leave a lasting impression and deserve recognition. Overall, Hotel Sans Souci Wien is a good hotel, but for me, the service experience did not align with the luxury reputation or expectations associated with the property."

"Great location and amazing service by the front desk, bartenders, bellman, etc. Any requests we made were taken care of immediately….Julian was wonderful each morning during breakfast as was Julia/Jennifer/Mike/David/Daniel. We stayed at Hotel Sans Souci for 7 nights. We walked to many places but it was also very easy to get an uber."
