PB hotel design editorial

Directly across from the Kunsthistorisches Museum on the Ringstrasse, one of the grandest urban set pieces in Europe, a six-storey Historicist palazzo dating to the late nineteenth century was transformed into The Amauris Vienna when the property opened in 2021. The stucco facade, painted a crisp white with its terracotta mansard dormers intact, holds its own against the imperial scale of the boulevard with the confidence of a building that has always known its address. Fifty-eight rooms and suites were carved from the interior during a comprehensive renovation that brought the Relais & Châteaux property into being while preserving the building's formal cornice lines and ceiling plasterwork. Inside, the design navigates a deliberately productive tension between Viennese institutional grandeur and a cooler contemporary sensibility. Standard rooms deploy grisaille architectural wallcoverings — column and arcade motifs that echo the Ringstrasse context just beyond the windows — paired with dark marble nightstands and upholstered platform beds. The attic suites read differently: sloped ceilings angled by the mansard roofline open to freestanding stone baths set against full-height Carrara marble walls, with arc-form pendant lighting overhead. The restaurant pulls Biedermeier-era oil paintings arranged salon-style against blackened timber joinery, curved banquette seating in dove-grey velvet surrounding white marble-topped tables. Beneath the inner courtyard, a travertine-clad spa with a steel-and-glass roof structure closes out the sequence — composed, Viennese in its bones, and entirely at ease with where it sits.

"Cannot say enough good things about this hotel!! Stayed with my husband as part of a Europe trip in May 2026. We booked through Chase Sapphire so got a couple of extra perks. Location: 5/5- on ring road, accessible to everything but not in the middle of heavy foot traffic. Cleanliness: 5/5- impeccable room, new, fresh, modern with a historical flare and all the amenities you could want- robe, slippers, Dyson hair dryer! Service: 5/5- from beginning to end, everyone at the hotel was friendly, helpful, smiling. They refilled our free bottle of water multiple times and brought us ice upon request. The concierge was lovely. Also got a massage at the hotel spa and while the spa is small and nothing glamorous, it was one of the best massages I’ve ever had- Ella was fantastic. Overall an amazing experience and would stay here if I ever came back again."

"Really everything about this hotel is amazing. The room was great. The staff was attentive and caring. The breakfast was awesome. The location, honestly, was even better than we imagined. We'd definitely return!"

"This was a wonderful experience — the moment we stepped into the hotel, we felt completely at ease. During check-in, we were greeted by Daniel (I hope I have the spelling right), who was extremely professional and warm. He also gave us an overview of Vienna's main attractions and recommended some restaurants. The evening tea provided by the hotel was quite special; the room was spotlessly clean, and the facilities were fully equipped. Of course, the best thing about the hotel is its excellent location — everything is within easy reach. One thing particularly worth mentioning is that on our last night, we were torn between staying another night in Vienna or heading to Salzburg. We consulted the staff, and the manager with the handsome beard recommended that we should go to Salzburg. It turned out to be absolutely the right choice. Salzburg has a very different atmosphere from Vienna — the city is beautiful, and in the distance you can see the foothills of the Alps. This city left us with wonderful memories of our trip. Thank you all. Here's another amazing thing: after returning home, I was looking through photos from my mother's trip to Vienna in 2003, and I was astonished to discover that in one of her photos, she had captured a tram coming around the corner and passing right in front of the hotel. Of course, the building didn't have the Amauris sign back then, but it still made me feel that perhaps this was fate. Finally, next time we visit Vienna, I am certain we will choose The Amauris once more."
