PB hotel design editorial

Directly across from the Kunsthistorisches Museum on the Ringstrasse, one of the grandest urban set pieces in Europe, a six-storey Historicist palazzo dating to the late nineteenth century was transformed into The Amauris Vienna when the property opened in 2021. The stucco facade, painted a crisp white with its terracotta mansard dormers intact, holds its own against the imperial scale of the boulevard with the confidence of a building that has always known its address. Fifty-eight rooms and suites were carved from the interior during a comprehensive renovation that brought the Relais & Châteaux property into being while preserving the building's formal cornice lines and ceiling plasterwork. Inside, the design navigates a deliberately productive tension between Viennese institutional grandeur and a cooler contemporary sensibility. Standard rooms deploy grisaille architectural wallcoverings — column and arcade motifs that echo the Ringstrasse context just beyond the windows — paired with dark marble nightstands and upholstered platform beds. The attic suites read differently: sloped ceilings angled by the mansard roofline open to freestanding stone baths set against full-height Carrara marble walls, with arc-form pendant lighting overhead. The restaurant pulls Biedermeier-era oil paintings arranged salon-style against blackened timber joinery, curved banquette seating in dove-grey velvet surrounding white marble-topped tables. Beneath the inner courtyard, a travertine-clad spa with a steel-and-glass roof structure closes out the sequence — composed, Viennese in its bones, and entirely at ease with where it sits.

"We just did 3 days in Vienna after a work trip in Prague. We stayed at this hotel. It is OUTSTANDING. The staff makes you feel like you are at a bed and breakfast, while located in a global city. The location is perfect. The room was immaculate. You want for nothing. This is a top notch quality niche hotel. Patrick, at the front desk, greeted us as soon as we arrived and he and his teammates were outstanding for our 3 nights. This hotel is a 10 out of 10. Ps - top 3 old fashioned I’ve ever had. "Having stayed in two of Vienna's Old World-style luxury hotels during previous visits, we chose the Amauris for our recent trip based on its more modern aesthetic, lower price point, proximity to the opera, museums, and other attractions, and excellent Tripadvisor reviews. I was slightly apprehensive because the property is not as well known as some of the others in town, but I can report after our visit that there's nowhere else we'd rather stay. We booked through American Express and were upgraded from a grand deluxe room to to an executive suite, which had a large separate sitting room with TV, minibar, half-bath, and was very comfortable and tastefully decorated with a large modern painting and original sculpture. Both the sitting room and bedroom were bright, airy, quiet, and spotless. The bed and linens were dreamy and we appreciated the chocolates and herbal teas left at turndown. Staff were very gracious and efficient without being formal, and the food—both at breakfast and at night in the bistro—was inventive and excellent. We did not try the tasting menu. Breakfast was cooked to order and served in a beautiful, light-flooded room hung with paintings that would be at home on the wall of any fine museum. We also appreciated and made good use of the fitness center and small pool. We could not have felt more welcome and there was not a thing we wanted that was not provided. It was an excellent value for the money. Thank you to the staff for making our stay in Vienna so memorable."

"We had a wonderful stay at The Amauris Vienna. Everything was simply outstanding. The rooms were impeccably clean, and the housekeeping team did an exceptional job every single day. Every member of the staff was warm, kind, professional, and genuinely welcoming. A special thank you to the reception team. Their recommendations were excellent. They suggested fantastic restaurants and an unforgettable concert that became one of the highlights of our trip. Their local knowledge and willingness to help made a real difference. The hotel's location is perfect. It is within walking distance of Vienna's most beautiful attractions, making it a pleasure to explore the city on foot. Vienna itself is an incredibly clean, elegant, and welcoming city, and staying at The Amauris Vienna made our experience even more enjoyable. Thank you to the entire team for your outstanding hospitality. You truly have an exceptional team, and we look forward to returning."
