PB hotel design editorial

Carl Appel's 1952 headquarters for the Austrian Economic Chambers was never meant to receive guests — it was built to project institutional authority, wrapped in Cipollino marble and planted firmly beside the Stadtpark as a statement of postwar reconstruction. Seven decades later, The Hoxton, Vienna has transformed that civic gravitas into something considerably more convivial, with BWM Designers & Architects carefully converting the listed eight-floor Modernist landmark into a 196-room hotel without stripping it of its original character. The double-height lobby retains its terrazzo floors and fluted anodised aluminium columns, and the building's presence on the street — those enormous glazed bays framed in green-veined marble, now animated by fringed terrace umbrellas and low outdoor sofas — carries the feeling of somewhere that has always had an audience. Inside, AIME Studios pitched the interiors somewhere between Viennese Kaffeehaus and knowing eclecticism. The bar channels a dimly lit Ringstrasse-era drinking room — leather banquette booths, brass wall sconces with pleated shades, dark zellige tiles catching candlelight — while guest rooms layer herringbone parquet with botanical curtains, amber velvet headboards, and gallery walls that slip in a neon Aida sign as a wink to the city's beloved pink-frosted café chain. Up on the rooftop, a thatched palapa bar sits beside the pool with Stephansdom's spire visible on the horizon, which is either an absurd contrast or a perfectly Viennese one, depending on your mood.

The Hoxton, Vienna Reviews

"The hotel had organised an event in the lobby. When I arrived the lobby was busy with lots of audio equipment being set up. I went out for dinner and on returning it was extremely loud. I called down to reception to see what time it was going to finish. They said 11pm. Which is late after a long day travelling. They were also unable to move me to a different room as the hotel was full."

"Basically nice design and clean rooms, tastefully and thoughtfully furnished. However: windows in the room are locked and air conditioning can only be set to a minimum of 20 degrees—too warm for me. Service is very friendly but seems very inexperienced and some staff only speak English, and not even very well. No parking garage. Breakfast is very expensive at 32 euros but there is very little choice (price-performance ratio is not good at all)."

"Unfortunately the Hoxton has adopted the unfortunate pretend fancy hotel habit of selling rooms with King beds that are not King beds, but rather significantly smaller. A King bed is an international standard between 76-80 inch wide. The “king” beds at the Hoxton are approximately 70 inches wide. This may seem a small difference but it’s an important one if you are a restless sleeper with your spouse. It is also is simply not what you are paying for. The Hoxton expects me to pay them with real money for a king size bed; why can’t they provide a real king size bed in exchange? I get this is a design 4 star hotel and not a 5 star hotel , but please don’t falsely advertise services you do not provide."

"Absolutely amazing stay at The Hoxton. I’d heard of them before but have never had the opportunity to stay at one until my trip to Vienna. From the outside, all the way to your bedroom, the hotel is perfectly decorated and curated. The bed, bedsheets and pillows were all 10/10 and we slept soundly. The small touches like a radio playing as you enter your room really makes the place feel like a home from home. The rooftop bar was great, and a real highlight for our trip. Every aspect was spot on which made our check out that bit tougher - highly recommended!"
