PB hotel design editorial

Sitting on its own artificial island in the middle of Bahrain Bay, connected to Manama's shoreline by a private causeway, the tower that houses the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay is among the Gulf's more theatrically positioned buildings. Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and completed in 2015, the 53-storey structure rises in honey-toned glass and metal cladding that catches the flat light of the Arabian Gulf from every direction — an effect visible in the aerial image, where the tower reads as a warm monolith against the turquoise shallows. The 273-room hotel fills the upper floors, while low-rise pavilions at the island's base house restaurants and event spaces, their landscaped gardens giving way to a curving infinity pool that dissolves into the bay. Inside, the interiors carry a vocabulary of collected eclecticism — macassar ebony wall panels flanking upholstered headboards in the guest rooms, custom axminster carpets in wave and abstract geometric patterns, emerald velvet armchairs, and lacquered chinoiserie cabinets in the suites suggesting a global grand-hotel tradition rather than any specifically regional reference. The rooftop bar takes a different register entirely: clusters of crimson beaded chandeliers hang low over Moroccan-patterned carpets and boldly upholstered high-back chairs, the floor-to-ceiling glass framing the Manama skyline at night like a stage set. The outdoor pool terrace, lined with date palms and travertine paving, offers the property's most grounded moment — water, sky, and the slow traffic of boats on the bay.

"Prearrival (9/10) We decided to spend New Year's Eve away from the typical frenetic crowds, seeking a destination that offered serenity without compromising on high-end luxury. The Four Seasons Bahrain Bay emerged as the clear choice. We booked four nights in a Premier Sea View Room, and the pre-arrival experience was flawless. Conversations with the concierge team were seamless, whether via email or the FS App. All logistics—from airport transfers to our New Year's Eve dinner reservations—were arranged well in advance with characteristic efficiency. Arrival (10/10) The arrival experience set a high bar. A Four Seasons representative met us immediately at the airport exit, ushering us into a pristine BMW 7 Series. The 30-minute drive was comfortable, building anticipation as we turned onto the causeway leading to the hotel's private island. The building itself is a masterpiece—a defining element of the Manama skyline. Its unique, architectural presence immediately signals that this is not a "cookie-cutter" Four Seasons. Despite our early 8:30 AM arrival, Mr. Gaber at the front desk wasted no time in checking us in. He also had a toy ready for my daughter—the first of many thoughtful gestures she received. When a minor technical glitch prevented my new credit card from authenticating, Gaber handled the situation with grace, insisting we head to our room to relax and sort the payment later. I couldn't have asked for a warmer, more frictionless start to our stay. Design and Location (10/10) Bahrain is delightfully compact, and the hotel’s location on its own private island offers the best of both worlds: exclusivity and accessibility. The Avenues Mall is just a short boat ride away, and Ubers are readily available for visits to the National Museum, the Grand Mosque, and local dining spots. The exterior architecture—the iconic H-shaped tower by SOM—has a commanding, monumental presence. However, once inside, the interiors shift to a thoughtfully designed, intimate "resort" ambiance that feels worlds away from a city business hotel. Room (10/10) Our room on the 25th floor offered dramatic, floor-to-ceiling views of the lagoon and the sea beyond. The interiors, designed by Pierre-Yves Rochon, are aging beautifully, showing no signs of having completed a decade. The design draws heavy inspiration from 1930s luxury ocean liners, featuring classic PYR elements: a maritime color palette of calming blues and greens, rich Macassar ebony wood accents, and Art Deco geometric touches that give the space a residential, residential feel rather than that of a standard hotel room. The room featured all the modern comforts one expects from a flagship FS property: the signature bed, a massive smart TV, and a stunning marble bathroom with dual vanities, a rain shower, and a deep-soaking tub. The toiletries were a standout—Lorenzo Villoresi Firenze—providing a wonderful olfactory touch to the stay. Service and Amenities (8/10) This is undeniably a flagship property—effectively a vertical resort—and the amenities reflect that status. The facilities are maintained to the highest standard, including five unique dining outlets, the second-largest spa in the global FS portfolio, a private man-made beach, three pools, and a water park that delighted both the kids and the "inner child" in us. However, the soft product had slight inconsistencies compared to the stellar hard product. There are many staff members who are absolute superstars, many of whom have been there since pre-opening—Mr. Gaber at the front desk, Shawkey at the pool and beach club, and Sanjay Negi at the gym. Their service was intuitive and flawless. That said, I felt a lack of genuine warmth from some of the newer staff; while the smiles were there, they occasionally felt scripted rather than effortless, a small gap when compared to other flagship FS resorts. Dining (8/10) We utilized In-Room Dining for breakfast daily, and the quality was consistently excellent. For the New Year's Eve celebration, we dined at Bahrain Bay Kitchen. The experience was fabulous, featuring an elaborate, high-quality spread followed by a countdown at the waterfront. We also had dinner at Byblos, the Levantine restaurant. While the service there was impeccable, the food fell slightly short of our high expectations. We missed trying CUT by Wolfgang Puck, but have firmly marked it for our next visit. Departure (10/10) Departure was as seamless as arrival, with a late checkout handled efficiently by Mr. Gaber. Our luggage was loaded into our cab as we bid farewell to a memorable stay. Value for Money (10/10) At 170 BHD++ for a Premier Room, the value proposition is exceptional. This is flagship-tier luxury at a price point significantly more reasonable than comparable properties in Dubai. You simply cannot ask for more. Probability of Revisiting (9/10) Aside from minor inconsistencies in service—which I am confident management can address with training—this is definitively the place to stay in Bahrain. We will be back."

"From what we have seen, Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay is truly one of the most beautifully structured and designed Four Seasons properties. The architecture and high-end contemporary design reflect the highest level of modern luxury. The service is excellent — attentive, professional, and consistently warm throughout our stay. A special thank you to the General Manager, whose leadership clearly reflects in the exceptional standards, attention to detail, and overall guest experience throughout the hotel. The Bahraini Afternoon Tea at Tea Time is highly recommended and truly a must. Enjoying it on the beautiful terrace makes the experience even more special. One of the highlights is : taking a boat ride directly from the hotel to the mall, or even organizing an elegant birthday celebration on the hotel’s boat, which adds a unique and memorable touch to the stay. For families, the hotel is outstanding. The kids’ club is huge, beautifully designed, and excellent, making it a perfect choice when traveling with children. Overall, an exceptional Four Seasons experience — luxurious and ideal for both families and couples. Highly recommended."
