PB hotel design editorial

Tucked into the Magdalena Quarter of Bruges, within a handsome 18th-century neoclassical townhouse whose white-painted facade and arched entrance canopy barely hint at the considered accumulation of antiques within, The Pand Hotel has maintained the atmosphere of a private Flemish residence for decades — deliberately so, and with considerable conviction. The property runs to just 26 rooms across four floors, a scale that reinforces the domestic register the owners have always prioritized over conventional hotel grandeur. The lobby counter, finished in painted cream panelling with brass fittings and leather-bound ledgers stacked on recessed shelves, carries the feeling of a gentleman's counting house rather than a check-in desk. The interiors draw heavily on the 18th and 19th-century Flemish and English decorative traditions — dark mahogany four-poster beds hung with draped canopies, gilt-framed mirrors, stone fireplace surrounds in the Baroque manner, and wide-plank oak floors worn to a patina that no decorator can manufacture. Wallcoverings in muted silver-grey floral prints complement slubbed linen curtains and plaid wool throws, the palette restrained enough to let the antique furniture hold the room. The bar room is characteristic: grey-green walls hung with a Dutch-school still life in the manner of Jan Davidsz de Heem, a curved mahogany counter beneath amber pendant shades, and a tufted leather chesterfield pushed to one side — a room assembled rather than designed, which is precisely its strength.

"We had a really lovely stay at The Pand Hotel in Bruges. The staff were extremely helpful and always greeted us with a big smile, which made the whole experience feel very welcoming. The hotel itself is a charming little boutique hotel with cozy rooms. The beds were very comfortable and the rooms were very quiet, so it was easy to get a good night’s sleep after walking around the city. Breakfast was excellent with a great à la carte selection. Everything was fresh and delicious. The location is also perfect; right in the old town city center and within easy walking distance of everything. Will definitely come back."

"From start to finish we had the most fabulous stay at this gorgeous little hotel. Our charming plus room was lovely - plenty of room for a city hotel, comfortable bed, pretty decor and lovely jacuzzi bath. There was nothing I could fault. The best bit however was the breakfast. The dining room was pretty and very comfortable, the delightful waiter who looked after us was so welcoming, charming and attentive. To find a city hotel where you receive table service at breakfast is quite rare in our experience, but the Pand do it so well. Beautiful bread, pastries, every kind of jam, honey, cheeses and cold meats, all served with coffee or tea in beautiful silver pots and a glass of champagne! If that’s not enough, your omelette or eggs should you want them, are cooked for you to order on the Aga in the dining room. The fabulous lady who served us drinks in the bar also needs a mention as do all the reception team. Everyone we were served by was warm, friendly and professional. Should we return to Bruges we’d definitely stay here again . It was a fabulous stay. Thank you for looking after us so well."

"Love this hotel! It is the personification of a charming boutique experience. Upon approach, you see the holiday magic as the entrance was flanked by two lit up trees. The lobby is warm and cozy with a well appointed reception. We are a family of four with two older teens and booked two side by side rooms. They were able to make two separate beds for the teens so they could comfortably share their own room. The bathrooms are very well appointed with hot showers, a soaking tub, and toiletries. The breakfast was absolutely wonderful and, as the restaurants get so full during the day as Bruges is filled with European day trippers, I would highly recommend getting breakfast with your stay as it is leisurely, warm, and delicious with pastries, eggs, fruit, yogurt, and unlimited drinks. The hotel is very centrally located and quiet at the same time - the ideal mix. I would return in a heartbeat."

"Having read the positive reviews and being a fan of small boutique hotels, I chose "The Pand" for my two-night stay in Brugge.......I rate it as follows.. POSITION-- 10! Central and quiet. RΟΟΜ-9 (we had the Charming room, which is rather small), but with comfortable beds. BΑΤΗRΟΟΜ-- 8 Our room did not have a shower but a bathtub, which was quite high and made it very difficult for the elderly people to climb in and a bit dangerous to climb out. (Maybe an appropriate stool might help) Additionally, there is no curtain or glass door, which can easily create a mess if you are not extremely careful. BREAKFAST--9 Not a big variety (no cakes, muffins, or scones, no pastry) NOISE LEVEL--8. Rooms are not soundproof, and in the morning, you will wake up to people talking in the corridor or the maid's vacuum cleaner. ATMOSPHERE--8 Mainly because the lobby and living room were not as warm as expected, and especially the breakfast room in the morning (9 a.m.) was COLD!!! Take care of that!!!!!!!!! PERSONNEL---9 Helpful but quite often missing from the reception desk, and having to call them. CLEANLINESS -----I would have rated it 10 because on the second day, they changed everything (sheets, towels, even slippers, which is a bit much) but the following happened...I had breakfast in bed (a cup of tea and a croissant), from which crumbs fell on the floor next to the bed. When I returned with everything fresh and tidy in the room...the crumbs were still there."
