PB hotel design editorial

Fifty metres from the Grand Place, on the site where Brussels once kept its city prison — amigo being a Flemish corruption of the Spanish word for the holding cell installed during Habsburg rule — the building that now houses Hotel Amigo was constructed in 1958 in a Flemish Renaissance style, its stepped gables and warm red brick facade designed to hold its own against the gilded theatrics of the square next door. The seven-storey structure manages that adjacency with confidence: from the images, the corbelled dormers and white-stone string courses carry exactly the authority the location demands, without tipping into pastiche. Olga Polizzi, Rocco Forte's director of design and the creative force behind the group's most coherent interiors, oversaw the scheme with her characteristic layering of antique furniture, fine art, and upholstered comfort. The 173 rooms draw on a palette of deep crimson and warm amber — the bedroom images show four-poster beds with turned finials, damask headboards in scarlet and gold, and glazed chinoiserie nightstands sitting alongside framed portrait drawings that recur throughout the property as a curatorial thread. The lounge deploys deep-buttoned velvet armchairs in burnt orange against dark parquet, while the restaurant wraps its banquette seating in teal-lacquered walls hung with Fornasetti plates — a wry nod to Italian craft from a hotel that wears its Belgian address with equal pride.

"My DOWNGRADE, I arrived at noon at Hotel Amigo, to be advised I would be upgraded. I can only say, I received a DOWNGRADE! 1) Room was not ready, acceptable upon arrival, but still not ready after 3 PM when was promised at the LATEST! 2) OOPS! They forgot all the upgrades. My travel mates who were also upgraded (who travel here less!) received delicious chocolate, and Champagne. We received….NOTHING,). When asked what the upgrade was, they agreed we should have received the same, BUT THEY NEVER DELIVERED. Finally a cheap $20 wine was to Kenny deli Ed at 9 PM. After a full dinner with wonderful wines, when would you drink this. Maybe at arrival, but not at 10 PM! 3) Bar service…..did I say service? After waiting, I went to bar and ordered a drink, which arrived, but NEVER SAW the waitress again, and when joined by another, never could order. Had to go to the bar to pay. No service!!, This once was a meticulously well run Hotel with great service. Still very nice, but definitely no longer a 4 star hotel. Very disappointed. Go to the Corinthia or Warwick!"

"Bar None one of the best hotels, if not the best hotel we've stayed at worldwide. The attention to detail by the entire Hotel Amigo staff is unpresented. Make sure you visit Christian at Bar Magritte for an unbelievable cocktail experience. We will not be disappointed staying here."

"We had a fabulous visit to Hotel Amigo. Best location of any hotel in Brussels! The hotel staff is outstanding as are the services they provide. Rooms are large, very clean, very comfortable AND very quiet! The hotel is like a home away from home and we never would consider staying any where else in Brussels!"

"We just had the most wonderful 2 night stay at Hotel Amigo in Brussels. It was our first time in Bruxelles & our first experience with Rocco Forte hotels. Amigo may now be our favorite city hotel! The entire staff was above and beyond helpful; front desk, concierges, doormen, restaurant staff were all great. The room was very comfortable and the hotels location just behind the Grand Plaza is perfect. The bar has a live piano player Friday / Saturday nights that was nice. Restaurant Boccino serves the best Italian food you’ll ever have. Hotel is also very close to Central station;,highly recommen a day trip to Brugge! Non-hotel tip~ Brussels airport is a disaster. Customs entry line for non EU passengers was over 3 hours! Do yourself a favor and fly into Amsterdam and take the train if going Brussels. And be sure to stay at Hotel Amigo!"
