PB hotel design editorial

Joseph Gire's white neoclassical facade along Avenida Atlântica has been one of Rio de Janeiro's defining architectural gestures since 1923 — a building whose European pedigree looked directly out over one of the world's great stretches of sand. The Copacabana Palace, now part of the Belmond collection, was commissioned by Swiss hotelier Octávio Guinle and expanded in stages through the 1940s and 1970s, eventually reaching 239 rooms and suites across its ten floors. From the balconies visible in the images — white-painted wrought-iron railings with circular motifs, herringbone timber floors catching the afternoon light — the famous Burle Marx wave-patterned promenade and the full arc of Copacabana beach unfold below, a view that has remained essentially unchanged for a century. Inside, the interiors navigate the tension between grand-hotel formality and Rio's inherent warmth with considerable ease. The Restaurant Cipriani glows beneath large painted gold pendant lanterns, its colonnaded dining room opening onto the pool terrace through sheer-draped floor-to-ceiling windows, red-lacquered chairs and a flowering carpet lending the space an unmistakably operatic quality. Guest rooms divide between two registers: the palace suites layer dark mahogany four-poster beds over Persian rugs and polished hardwood floors, while the renovated standard rooms adopt a lighter hand — bleached oak wall panelling, patterned linen curtains, landscape paintings of Rio in silver frames — that feels closer to a well-appointed private apartment than a conventional hotel room.

"From the moment I arrived to the moment I left the Staff and service was unsurpassed. On arrival, Rio was preparing for the Shakira Concert over the road at the Beach. The Hotel staff and security were wonderful guiding me through the throngs of people hoping to catch a glimpse of the Star. The Reception staff were very helpful and locely to see them all smiling and they explained everything beautifully. Then I was shown to my room and even instructed which lift would be quicker to use due to their special guest and her large enterouage at the Hotel too. The room was amazing and I was shown where everything was. Just wonderful service. The breakfast was a buffet or you could order from the kitchen. If you left there hungry you were hard to please. Once again the infectious smile of all the staff just set your day up beautifully. The housekeeping team did a lovely job of the room and loved the little touches at bedtime of having a bottle of water and mouth wash by the bed and the slippers. The precision of the Hotel staff and security getting me to my tour coach and back through all the crowds was amazing."

"We stayed here for one night to celebrate my wife’s birthday, and although we had heard very good things about the hotel, it completely exceeded our expectations. From the moment we arrived, we were genuinely blown away by the whole experience. The hotel itself, the facilities, the restaurants, the pool area and, most importantly, the staff were all incredible. Every member of staff we came across was friendly, attentive and professional, and nothing felt like too much trouble. It is certainly not a cheap stay, but in our opinion it was absolutely worth it. Everything about the experience felt special, and I would go as far as saying it was one of the best hotel stays I have ever had. A truly fantastic hotel and a memorable stay. We would definitely return."

"Do not hesitate to book the Copacabana Palace. The service is beyond expectations and the location is perfect for exploring Rio. The concierge team helped to plan our entire trip, which included a fantastic 8 hour tour and an evening at the Roxy show."
