PB hotel design editorial

Oskar Metsavaht, the founder of Brazilian fashion and lifestyle label Osklen, brought his ASAP philosophy — as sustainable as possible — to the interiors of JANEIRO Hotel when it opened in Leblon in 2018, and the result is a building that feels less like a hotel than a very well-edited apartment tower with a view most Cariocas would trade everything for. Architect Lia Siqueira conceived the 19-storey structure as a lean modernist tower on Avenida Delfim Moreira, its facade clad in travertine marble with clean horizontal framing that sets it quietly apart from Leblon's residential streetscape. The ground-floor entrance, visible in the images, presents warm freijó wood slatting beneath a travertine canopy, an outdoor terrace of solid timber benches softening what could have been a corporate arrival. Inside, the 51 rooms are organised around unobstructed ocean views, white linen and pale stone floors kept deliberately bare so that the Atlantic fills every frame. Metsavaht brings texture through slatted wood consoles and low platform beds in warm timber, with pirarucu fish-skin leather introducing a material that is distinctly Amazonian in origin. The dining room captures the building's essential proposition most directly: a slatted cedar ceiling overhead, wicker-seated chairs that echo mid-century Brazilian craft traditions, and a panoramic window running the full width of the space, the Cagarras Islands sitting on the horizon like punctuation. On the rooftop, a glass-sided lap pool is cut into a white-rendered terrace, the ocean surfacing through the transparent wall as if the water inside and outside were continuous.

About

Soaking up the breeze, right bang smack on the sand, arms flung wide open to the Atlantic, this is JANEIRO. Located in the middle of Leblon’s marvellous beach-culture, we bring Rio’s bossa vibe to life. Nature is a joyful accomplice. And what about that view? The Cagarras islands scatter across a horizon blue as far as the eye can see. No make-believe needed here. At night, the Moon beams, and in the distance, the lights of Vidigal glitter and dance like fireflies. Pure poetry for the eyes, woven into the urban effervescence of the city. The barefoot simplicity of the beach finds its way into the smallest of details; from the rooms to the food, the music to the art, all is an extension of the golden sands out front. We sway to no other rhythm but Rio’s.

"I had a lovely stay at JANEIRO Hotel in Leblon. The location is fantastic. It’s one of the best areas in Rio, with easy access to the beach, great restaurants, and a generally safe, very upscale feel. The hotel itself is beautifully designed and has a relaxed, luxury vibe. Service was warm and welcoming throughout my stay. That said, one important drawback: there is no on-site gym. Guests are directed to a facility about two blocks away. While that might not be an issue for some, it’s a meaningful inconvenience if you rely on having a gym in the hotel, especially for early mornings or tight schedules. Overall, it’s a great property in an amazing neighborhood, but the lack of an on-site gym is something to consider depending on your travel needs."

"This hotel is in a great location in Leblon right next to the beach, and within walking distance of Ipanema. The hotel is modern and clean with understated luxury. The area felt safe and upmarket. We walked around during the day and at night with no issue. The bedroom was well equipped, bed very comfortable, and the bathroom shower was wonderful. The restaurant offered a wide, tasty choice of options for breakfast, to be enjoyed with a view of the beach. Service overall was ok, but we did get frustrated on several occasions with the rooftop bar where it often took 20 mins plus to get a cocktail. The hotel hosted a pre-NYE party on the roof while we were staying and all guests were invited. It was a lively, unexpected, fun evening with great views of the beach below and Christ the Redeemer, all light-up. Lastly, their beach service right across from the hotel is excellent. The attendant found a great place for us, provided chairs, umbrellas, refreshments etc - the beach is busy, so this service is a huge plus."

"Not too big hotel, with excellent aesthetics and a perfect location on Leblon beach. Every member of staff is professional and friendly. Breakfast (part a la carte, but included in the price) is good. The buffet isn't the biggest. The room (we had a suite) is big, airy and comfortable. The swimming pool has an excellent view over the beach, ocean and city (with a view on Corcovado and Cristo Redentor), but it is small. Go to the beach instead (the hotel provides beach service), and enjoy the atmosphere on the beach - it's incredible."
