PB hotel design editorial

Few hotels in Southeast Asia carry as much layered history as the white stucco facade on Phnom Penh's Monivong Boulevard, where Raffles Hotel Le Royal has stood since 1929. Designed by Ernest Hébrard, the French colonial architect responsible for much of Indochina's grandest civic ambition, the building synthesises Art Deco geometry with Khmer decorative motifs in the hybrid style Hébrard called Indo-Chinese — a formal experiment that proved as durable as the reinforced concrete beneath its lime-washed render. Charles de Gaulle, Somerset Maugham, and Jacqueline Kennedy all passed through its arched porte-cochère, which remains exactly as the images show it: five bays of rounded arches beneath a deep overhanging eave, terracotta-tiled and bracketed in dark timber, flanked by frangipani-shaded wings stepping back on either side. The 175 rooms and suites were restored by Raffles when the group reopened the property in 1997 after years of abandonment during the Khmer Rouge period. Ebonised four-poster beds sit on polished hardwood floors beneath slowly turning ceiling fans — colonial tropicalia handled with enough restraint to feel atmospheric rather than theatrical. The Elephant Bar, with its barrel-vaulted arches painted with Khmer-inflected botanical murals, green encaustic tile flooring, and a long mahogany counter hung with black-shaded pendants, anchors the social life of the hotel with the same confidence it has maintained across nearly a century. The courtyard pool, framed by frangipani trees and a colonnade pavilion with a pitched terracotta roof, completes a composition that feels genuinely, rather than decoratively, historical.

A history of hospitality. The luxury of time. The secret charm of Cambodia. One of Asia's essential destination hotels, Raffles Phnom Penh has been the iconic sanctuary for the well-travelled since 1929. Located in the heart of vibrant Phnom Penh, Raffles Hotel Le Royal has been part of the history of the city and welcomes, as it has always done, a diverse clientele of entrepreneurs, writers, journalists, royalty and intrepid travellers from across the globe. The rooms and suites have been respectfully restored to reflect a distinguished blend of Khmer, Art Deco and French colonial architecture. In keeping with history and a sense of place, the elegant Restaurant Le Royal serves modern French and Royal Khmer cuisines with original recipes graciously gifted to Raffles by the Royal Palace. Almost as famous as the hotel itself, the Elephant Bar is where local residents and visitors alike gather over cocktails, particularly to sample from the country's most diverse gin collection.

"We had such a memorable stay at Raffles Hotel Le Royal. First opened in 1929, it’s one of those hotels that feel deeply connected to the city's history yet continue to evolve in such thoughtful ways. This was our second stay here. We returned for the beautiful sense of old-world elegance – lush tropical gardens and the grand atmosphere, yet what impressed us most this time was how the hotel has introduced several new family-friendly touches, making it an increasingly lovely option for an Asian city break with children. Our daughter loved the garden games recently added to the lush grounds, and the hotel has also created a beautiful indoor playroom for children, cleverly converted from a hotel room. In Phnom Penh’s heat, it’s such a thoughtful addition, giving children a lovely place to play and take a break during the day. When we arrived, there was also the most beautiful kids' amenities kit on our daughter's bed. The swimming pool is another highlight and, in our opinion, one of the best in the city, set within lush tropical gardens that make the whole hotel feel like a peaceful oasis from Phnom Penh’s energy. Another highlight for us was the new à la carte breakfast concept. Instead of a buffet, guests can order freely from the menu with unlimited dishes, which we absolutely loved. Everything is freshly prepared and beautifully presented, and the food was excellent. It felt far more relaxed and enjoyable than navigating a buffet. One afternoon, we had the opportunity to experience Raffles afternoon tea with Her Highness Princess Chansita Norodom, a Raffles Ambassador, who shared the most wonderful stories about the hotel with us. We also spent an evening in the iconic Elephant Bar, which is as elegant and atmospheric as ever and still feels very much like the social heart of the hotel. Dinner at Restaurant Le Royal was another highlight and quite possibly one of the best meals we’ve had in a long time. Set beneath a stunning hand-painted ceiling, the restaurant showcases Cambodian royal cuisine alongside refined Khmer gastronomy. The service was exceptional. Despite its heritage and grandeur, the hotel never feels formal or distant. Instead, it's consistently warm and friendly, and the team are wonderful. Raffles Hotel Le Royal remains one of our favourite hotels in the world, and we can’t wait to return."

"Nice. Booked to get the Raffles experience which did not disappoint. Good location, nice setting, attentive staff, nice pool area but even though it was very quiet during our visit it is still a corporate hotel. Rooms are lovely but small. Frustrating that their outside dining area overlooks the stair case with no view at all. I would have thought that it would be fairly straightforward to relocate the outside restaurant so that you could have breakfast overlooking the pools."

"Fantastic hotel with all the old world charm you could ask for. This hotel is a classic old style hotel with guest services that are top class, all staff were very attentive, knowledgeable and approachable. The rooms are comfortable and meet a very high standard of decor, it has everything a traveller could need. We ate at the hotel restaurant where the service was second to none, it was value for money taking the service and surroundings into consideration. The pools are fantastic and a very good area to just relax, a perfect spot for an afternoon with a couple of beers and a snack by the pool. The bar was good and the staff chatty, great place for a couple of cocktails to end the day. Would highly recommend this hotel."

"Having spent five nights in Siem Reap and three nights on Jati Koh Russey Island Resort we travelled by road to Phnom Phen and checked into the Raffles Hotel Le Royal for two nights. The hotel slightly inferior in my view to its sister hotel in Siem Reap it still is a fantastic hotel. The hotel boasts an abundance of colonial features both in the rooms ans comunal areas.Lovely large bed with cloud like comfy pillows and a great walk in shower vest we have ecperienced this trip. The pool area is delightful for taking the edge off of the searing mid day sun. Another stand out feature of the hotel is the Elephant bar best visited betwwen 6 to 8 pm which is happ hour. Staff our oustanding and generous eith their good wishes. We have been lucky to visit a numver of 5 star luxury hotels in Phnom Phen the Rosewood and the Grand Hyatt and am pleased to sayvwe made the right choice in staying at Raffles. Fernando Nieto in Phnom Phen staying at Raffles."
