PB hotel design editorial

Built in 1962 as a private retreat for King Norodom Sihanouk — a place to house his most distinguished guests, among them Charles de Gaulle and Jackie Kennedy — the low-slung villa compound on the edge of Siem Reap's Royal Gardens carries a history that most hotels could only invent. Aman converted it into Amansara in 2002, working with Kerry Hill Architects to strip the mid-century Khmer modernist structure back to its essential geometry: cream rendered walls, flat rooflines, and a circular pavilion whose iridescent tiled dome is visible across the pool terrace and anchors the property's compositional centre. The interiors pursue a discipline that suits both the architecture and its Angkorian context. Dark-stained timber joinery panels every bedroom wall from floor to ceiling, set against white plaster and sisal rugs, with rattan pendant shades and ebonised armchairs in the manner of vintage Danish tropical furniture. Bas-relief panels depicting the sacred tree of Khmer iconography hang as the sole decorative gesture in otherwise spare rooms. The circular dining pavilion — its rubble-stone columns alternating with folded glass screens that open entirely to the garden — shares the same palette of dark wood, woven shades, and polished concrete floors. With just 24 suites across a single storey, Amansara maintains the atmosphere of a private residence rather than a resort, the bamboo groves and dark reflecting pools completing an effect closer to contemplative sanctuary than conventional hotel.

"I would like to express my sincere appreciation for the wonderful service. Every member of the team exceeded my expectations, and I am truly impressed by the level of professionalism and care shown throughout my experience. You have created an environment where every guest feels valued and special. What stands out most is your remarkable ability to anticipate guests’ needs, often before a single word is spoken. I am very proud of the dedication and excellence you consistently demonstrate. Keep up the outstanding work! Our tour guide Sreang is funny and the best."

"This was my first stay at an Aman property, and frankly it was far below expectations. Given Aman’s pricing and reputation, this experience was not acceptable. No pre-arrival service at all Despite booking through American Express, no one from the hotel contacted me prior to arrival. The hotel later confirmed they had my phone number, yet no call, no text, no WhatsApp — nothing. I had to reach out myself to ask why there had been zero pre-arrival contact. For a brand that claims personalized service, this is a basic failure. Poor concierge & planning After I contacted them, they sent some generic activity suggestions. We agreed on a circus evening for Friday, only to receive a message from the front desk at 4:00 pm on the same day saying the circus was fully booked. No backup plan. No alternatives. No proactive solution. Only after I explicitly asked what else we could do was I told to walk to Pub Street. Suggesting Pub Street as a last-minute solution at an Aman resort is frankly embarrassing. Room & welcome mistakes The welcome food in the room was chicken spring rolls, despite the fact that I am allergic to chicken. This shows a complete lack of attention to guest information. Housekeeping issues: • The room door was left open after cleaning • The large window blinds are old, dirty, torn, and manually operated, split into three awkward sections This is not luxury — it’s neglect. Facilities are unacceptable for the price • The main pool is next to an active construction site with constant drilling noise • The pool looks old, worn, and in serious need of renovation • A new building directly overlooks the pool, meaning almost zero privacy • Wi-Fi at the pool barely works, which is unacceptable in 2026 • The gym is extremely basic — a DoubleTree by Hilton has better equipment • On arrival, used towels and empty water bottles were still lying around in the gym This is nowhere near Aman standards. Food & beverage Breakfast is included and was excellent — à la carte, high quality, and one of the few highlights. Dinner, however, was very disappointing. Extremely limited menu (4–5 dishes, mostly fish) and very basic. Not worth doing. Service staff vs. management The staff themselves are friendly and polite. Everyone greets you and makes small talk. The problem is not the staff — it is management, organization, and standards. Excursions The guide was excellent, but he is a freelancer, meaning the same experience can easily be booked outside the hotel without paying Aman prices. One standout moment The best experience of the entire stay was when I went jogging at Angkor Wat and an Amansara employee followed me for 10 km in a tuk-tuk, providing water and fresh towels. This was genuinely exceptional — and ironically highlights how inconsistent the rest of the stay was. Final verdict For the price, brand reputation, and expectations, this stay was very disappointing. Aman markets itself as the highest level of luxury, but at Amansara this promise is not being delivered. Poor communication, weak concierge service, outdated facilities, noise issues, and lack of attention to detail completely undermine the experience. This was not an Aman-level stay."

"Our entire 4 night stay at Amansara was nothing short of magical. From getting us an hour at Angkor Wat to ourselves at sunrise, to the incredible Angkor Spiritual Package experiences (water blessing, monk led forest meditation etc)- we were blown away each and every day. Highly recommend the spiritual package although we are not religious because it provided so many interesting and intimate cultural experiences we would have otherwise missed out on. I found it fascinating to spend time with a young monk and learn about why there are so many monks in this part of the world (free education and more). We also took a yoga and boxing class and ended up booking each twice as they were so much fun. The day we left we asked to go to Apopo to learn about the giant African rats fighting landmines and the staff arranged for us to go on a tour at the last minute but gently reminded us there would be other guests with us and they would be allowed to ask questions. We found this hilarious but it is definitely culture shock leaving an Aman and going back into the real world where you are no longer treated like a celebrity. Don’t miss the chance to stay at this incredible property if you can."

"We had a wonderful 4 night stay at the Amansara. Above all the staff and service were just world class. Everything anticipated, nothing too much trouble, everyone interesting, smiling but discreet. It seems effortless but given that very very few other hotels ever come close to this level of service, you realise how much hard work must go into achieving it. The room was absolutely beautiful and perfectly set up and the spa amazing. I particularly wanted to call out the exceptional level of help with planning all the excursions that the Amansara provides . You are here to see these wonders of the world (and they deliver in spades) but the team help advise what to visit and when and then execute flawlessly. Our guide (for the 3 days) that they arranged was just awesome - knowledgeable, passionate, funny. It was a pleasure spending 3 days with him. If I was being picky I would say that the food was slightly below expectations but I think this reflects more on me than the Amansara. I’m not great with many of the ingredients that feature in Cambodian cuisine so I tended to select the western options which are well represented on the menu. Don’t get me wrong these were well executed by a clearly well drilled kitchen team - they just weren’t special in the way that everything else about the Amansara is. In fairness my wife invariably selected the Cambodian cuisine options and she said it was excellent, so as I said probably more me than the hotel. I’d recommend this place to anyone with an interest in visiting the Khmer temples. It’s a very special place to stay in one of the most astounding places I have ever visited."

"We had a wonderful stay at Amansara, made even more memorable with a complimentary upgrade to a pool suite. From thoughtful touches like having my jacket cleaned overnight, to the genuine care shown when my husband felt unwell on the Tonle Sap boat tour — thank you, Phaneth, for your kindness — we truly felt looked after. Our guide, Buntham, was excellent and even captured some of our favourite candid photos at Angkor Wat. At breakfast, Ramorn surprised me with Noum Kong after a casual chat about my love for donuts, complete with stories of how locals enjoy them in the fields — such a special touch. The highlight was the heartfelt birthday surprise for my husband, and we’re also grateful to Guicle and Chanthoeun for their warm hospitality. Thank you, Amansara, for turning little moments into lasting memories."
