PB hotel design editorial

Sited a short distance from the temple complex that draws millions of visitors to Siem Reap each year, Anantara Angkor Resort & Spa was conceived as an exercise in architectural deference — low-rise pavilion blocks arranged around a central courtyard, their terracotta-tiled pitched roofs and dark timber balustrades recalling the domestic vernacular of Khmer colonial architecture rather than asserting any grand hotel ambition. The colonnaded entrance corridor, visible in the images, channels arriving guests through a sequence of white-plastered columns and potted tropical plantings toward a painted stone relief at the reception desk — a processional gesture that borrows something from the axial planning of Angkor's own sacred precincts. Throughout the 39 rooms and suites, the interiors work in dark hardwoods, woven rattan headboard panels, jute circular rugs, and hand-turned drum-form occasional tables with glass tops — materials that carry weight and warmth without straining for exoticism. Balconies furnished with folding teak chairs extend every room into the garden canopy, areca palms and frangipani softening the rooflines beyond. The restaurant sustains this discipline: a soaring teak-beamed ceiling pitched above white linen tables and upholstered chairs in graphite linen, the bar framed in deep mahogany millwork with amber pendant lighting. The pool courtyard, long and dark-tiled, mirrors the surrounding palm grove in its still surface — the effect closer to a private residence than a resort.

"The best hotel that we’ve ever stayed in! As well as the usual Angkor Watt trips, booking into the hotel’s cooking course is also a MUST! Lay Sochann (the head chef) was knowledgeable and very approachable - he even took us shopping in the local market for all the products!"

"I don’t usually write such long reviews of hotel stays, but the Anantara in Siem Reap really exceeded expectations. As seasoned travellers, we’ve stayed in the Minor group before and have always been impressed with Anantara properties, which is what led us to book this hotel on our most recent trip to Cambodia. Firstly, we opted for the hotel-arranged transfer from Siem Reap airport. It’s of course more expensive than a taxi or tuk tuk, but after hours of travelling we just wanted something quick and comfortable. It was very easy to arrange, just an email beforehand and the hotel sorted everything promptly. Communication was polite, clear and straightforward. The driver arrived on time with a sign showing our name, and we were taken in a brand new, air-conditioned vehicle with snacks and mineral water provided. The seats were even cooled, which we hadn’t experienced before, and fully reclined, which was very welcome after a long journey. He checked we were comfortable throughout and pointed out places of interest along the way, which was a nice touch. On arrival at the hotel, we were met by the general manager and other staff, which we really liked. It felt like a genuinely warm welcome, almost like a bit of red carpet treatment. We were then introduced to our butler, Sam, who explained everything and made us feel at ease straight away. He was very helpful, and we were pleasantly surprised to receive a complimentary upgrade after our long journey. This may have been due to it being low season, but either way it was very much appreciated. We also want to mention the manager, Yuki, who was incredibly helpful throughout our stay. She made a point of checking in with us and ensuring everything was exactly as we wanted it, and that we had no issues at all. That level of care didn’t go unnoticed. The room was very clean, and we appreciated that it was tidied while we were out, along with an evening turndown service. We were also given “nightly indulgences”, traditional Khmer sweet treats, which were a lovely surprise in the evening. The amenities were excellent, with thoughtful touches like a sewing kit included. Even the bathrobes were good quality and lined. We had a minor issue with the hairdryer being temperamental, but this was resolved within minutes, which says a lot about how attentive the staff are. We also noticed how carefully the cleaning staff maintained other areas, even polishing balcony banisters, which gave us real confidence in the overall cleanliness. We felt our belongings were well cared for at all times. The staff truly are exceptional and arguably make the hotel. Their level of English is excellent and the service throughout was outstanding. We were always greeted warmly and made to feel welcome. The complimentary trip on the Cambodian ferris wheel behind the hotel was a lovely touch, as were the recommendations from staff. We were genuinely impressed by everyone, from housekeeping and maintenance through to the front desk. Apologies that we can’t remember all the names, but everyone we encountered was fantastic. The food and breakfast options were excellent. The wait staff and chefs were both attentive and polite. Mary and Vivienne, along with the rest of the team, stood out in particular. They were so attentive, happy to make recommendations, and made the whole dining experience feel relaxed and welcoming. The pool area was beautiful, very clean, and service poolside was great. It was never an issue getting a lounger, and being able to order food and cocktails directly to your sunbed was ideal. The hotel is well located, just a short tuk tuk ride from the centre of town. While we could have used Grab, we chose the hotel’s tuk tuk service as it was comfortable and reasonably priced. The drivers were friendly, trustworthy, and gave good local recommendations. We also found it really convenient being able to arrange journeys and message the hotel via WhatsApp. Responses were always very quick, which made everything easy. The spa services were excellent. We really enjoyed our massage and the complimentary foot cleanse beforehand. The staff were considerate throughout, and we left feeling very relaxed. We also made use of the jacuzzi and saunas afterwards, which was a great addition. On checkout, we again used the hotel’s transfer service, which was just as seamless. It was also helpful that they provided the bill the night before, giving us time to check everything properly. Overall, this was one of the best hotel stays we’ve had in a long time. The staff at every level are doing a fantastic job. The culture and ethos of the hotel really come through, and you genuinely feel like a valued guest. The warmth and friendliness of the Cambodian people shines through in the team here. Credit to the management, it’s a truly well-run hotel. I’m sure we’ve missed out many staff names, but every single person we encountered was exceptional. Johanna & Sophie"

"Anantara Angkor was absolutely incredible. The hotel is located about 10 minutes away from the super touristy main centre of the village and this is a good thing. We could really relax here. The whole hotel has this very calming feeling. Like a little oasis before you go and take your tuk tuk or bike to visit Angkor, which si also just 15 min away! The rooms are perfect. Big, nice and bright during the day and dark during the night with the blackout curtains. There is no noise at all as this hotel is small and rooms are situated around a calm common area. The breakfast, lunch and dinner were all great! Very tasty food! I would highly recommend going here."

"We had a wonderful time at the Anantara Angkor! Every aspect of the place was designed with great care and aesthetic. The staff are amazing. Unfortunately it was a few months back so I can't remember their names but they were all really great. The GM (I think he goes by SG) makes you feel like you are a special guest in his home. We stayed in the two bedroom suite which was incredible. The food was lovely and they even put on a traditional Apsara dance show in the courtyard. We loved Siem Reap but I would go back even just for this property alone."
