PB hotel design editorial

French Indochina's architectural grammar — white rendered facades, stepped parapets, tall casement windows framed in dark-painted steel — gets its most considered contemporary restatement in Siem Reap's French Quarter, where the Park Hyatt Siem Reap opened in 2013 across a low-rise compound of connected pavilions. The exterior, visible at dusk in the images, layers Art Deco massing with the kind of temple-tower silhouette that the colonial architects of the 1930s borrowed from Khmer sources and then codified into a regional style. Sala sugar palms planted along the street frontage root the building in its Cambodian setting without any of the forced rusticity that lesser properties in the region tend to reach for. Inside, the interiors move between registers with considerable assurance. Guestrooms carry polished hardwood floors the colour of dark mahogany, dark-framed platform beds, and recurring medallions of repoussé silverwork — a Bodhi tree motif — mounted as wall sculpture above the headboard, grounding the otherwise spare white rooms in local craft traditions. The restaurant draws its atmosphere from the colonial brasserie: veined marble floors, coffered ceilings with dark timber beams, generous onionfold pendant lanterns in amber glass, and deep leather club chairs set around white-clothed tables. Out in the garden, a lap pool tiled in green onyx-effect stone runs between whitewashed Art Deco gate frames, palm fronds cutting across the strict geometry — the whole composition pitched somewhere between a Phnom Penh civic building and a private maison.

"My partner and I stayed at the Park Hyatt Siem Reap for 3 nights on our first trip to Asia. We had never been to Cambodia before, and the trip was made particularly special due to the accommodation at Park Hyatt Siem Reap. We booked the Park Privilege stay in one of the few Park Executive Suites on the property, inclusive of round-trip transportation to/from Siem Reap International Airport. From the moment we were picked up, we were pampered with water, cold towels, and traditional Cambodian snacks like dried bananas, and spiced nuts. The airport is 1 hour from the centre of Siem Reap where the hotel is located, and so the expedited immigration and hotel organised transport made the journey go quickly. Upon arrival, we were escorted to the Living Room, a space filled with plush couches and chairs, and we were immediately offered a welcome drink from a wide variety of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic options. We don’t drink, so it was lovely to see an arrangement of mocktails and tea on the menu. Check-in was relaxed, which was particularly nice after a long day of travel. We were then given a tour of the main entrance space, in which an impressive Banyan tree looms over the central courtyard where daily breakfast and nightly dinner/cultural shows are offered adjacent to the Dining Room. The breakfast at Park Hyatt Siem Reap was perhaps our favourite part of our stay (we never enjoyed dinner at the hotel). It came with typical buffet-style pastries, fruits, salads, etc, but the best part was the a la carte dishes from the menu including very tasty Cambodian classics (a must order!). Each morning, local craftspeople bordered the courtyard offering everything from Cambodian waffles and coffee to painting and pottery activities. The pottery in the hotel was sourced from local Khmer Ceramics (which we also visited—and highly recommend). The cultural highlights really made the hotel seem connected to the local community. The hotel treated us to a celebratory cake for a personal celebration and other treats upon arrival. We also received a daily supply of fruits and water, which, in combination with the private plunge pool, was a great way to refresh throughout the day. Our room was well equipped with Le Labo Bergamote 22 products in the bathroom. Although we barely saw the housekeeping, the room was kept spotless and nightly turndown service was always completed on our return. Our stay wasn’t perfect—the air conditioning was broken in our room on the first night. However, the hotel responded promptly and sent someone to address the issue. There was also some confusion on arrival as to our room number and some last minute changes. Overall, though, the service was amazing. We were greeted by name each morning at breakfast, the staff remembered our coffee orders, and were made aware of our tours and inquired about the day on our return. Given the price, we are still unsure of the value especially considering how inexpensive everything else is in Cambodia. We booked the Angkor Wat Sunrise Tour through the hotel and were impressed by the organisation. Before departure at 5am, pastries, coffee, and water were arranged in the lobby complementary for the guests. After seeing the Angkor Wat sunrise and tour of the main temple, we were given the option of boxed breakfast or to return to the hotel for breakfast. We chose to return to the hotel, and recommend this if you also book the sunrise tour (don’t miss out on the Cambodian specialty menu items!). We then went back to finish the tour at ~9am. Our concierge also matched us with an excellent tour guide. One final note: we had no idea that USD was widely accepted in Cambodia, and that includes the hotel. While we were able to exchange some small bills, the hotel operates with USD, as do most of the local businesses. Exchanging Cambodian currency prior to arrival really isn’t that necessary. TLDR: overall, the relaxed but attentive atmosphere made our stay. The location is perfect, and the services offered were streamlined, easy, and personal."

"Don’t stay here. Service is not good, mosquitoes everywhere including in the bar and restaurant, and they up charge you if you try to pay in Cambodian Riel. We were here for 2 full days. Check-in took almost an hour. I asked them to break a Cambodian Riel bill, and they refused. I didn’t ask for a conversion, just take a large bill and give me smaller bills. They invited me to do that outside the hotel. The layout of the entrance is bizarre. The “lobby” is physically separate from the front door. They only have 2 people to man 3 doors, so if you try to go through the doors, they constantly try to sprint by you after they open 1 door for you. It’s hard to enjoy breakfast or happy hour if you are constantly being swarmed by mosquitos. These are indoor air conditioned spaces, but they are filled with mosquitos. Staff does not speak English. They act like they do, but they don’t. I asked for an omelet and got a bowl of fried rice. Check out took almost as long when I realized they were charging a 4.6% fee to pay in local currency. Everything in the hotel is charged in dollars. There are lots of nice hotels nearby. Choose one of them."
