PB hotel design editorial

Facing the Royal Gardens in Siem Reap, a white-painted colonial building with terracotta hipped roofs and deep wraparound verandahs has stood as Cambodia's most storied address since French architects completed it in 1932. Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor was conceived during the height of French Indochina's prestige tourism era, when European archaeologists and adventurers arrived to document Angkor Wat and expected accommodation to match their sense of occasion. The three-storey structure presents a composed symmetrical facade to the street — louvred shutters, white balustrades, a porte-cochère framed by date palms — with a long pool terrace opening at the rear, where the building's full horizontal length reflects in still water against a backdrop of tropical canopy. The 119 rooms and suites carry the atmosphere of a carefully tended colonial residence rather than a renovated relic. Dark-stained four-poster beds with finial posts rise against warm taupe walls, polished hardwood floors anchored by Aubusson-style rugs, and ceiling fans turning slowly overhead — period details that register as quietly considered rather than theatrical. The restaurant interiors layer wicker and cane seating against marble-inlaid tile floors and white coffered ceilings, decorative wrought-iron screens providing the room's ornamental grammar. Chinoiserie desk chairs and brass swing-arm reading lamps signal the post-renovation intervention without disrupting the colonial-era cadence that makes the Grand Hotel d'Angkor genuinely irreplaceable among Southeast Asia's heritage properties.

Raffles Grand Hotel D'Angkor Reviews

"We had such a wonderful stay at Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor. It’s one of those hotels where you really feel the history the moment you arrive. The hotel first opened in 1932 and still carries that sense of old-world travel; wide corridors, elegant shutters and beautiful gardens. We were travelling as a family with our daughter, and the team made her feel so welcome. She absolutely loved the little in-room tent that had been set up for her, and one evening the butler even sent up cupcakes as a surprise, which completely made her day. One thing we particularly enjoyed was the complimentary programme of experiences offered by the hotel. We tried a few of them, including learning the art of lotus flower folding, which was surprisingly relaxing, and a cocktail-making session with the bartender, where we made an Angkor Sling. There are also other activities like tennis and cultural experiences around the hotel. After early mornings exploring the temples, coming back to the hotel pool is incredibly refreshing in the afternoons, and the gardens make the whole place feel like a sanctuary. We also loved afternoon tea in the Conservatory. The Champagne breakfast each morning was another highlight, along with a wide range of dishes made to order. Siem Reap has many beautiful hotels, but this one feels particularly special because of its history and character. For us, it struck the perfect balance of heritage, atmosphere and genuine warmth for families. We can’t wait to return!"

"We spent 4 excellent nights at the Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor. It proved to be a wonderful base for exploring both the town and the temples, while also offering a much-welcomed retreat during the hottest part of the afternoon. Breakfast and dining throughout the hotel were very well executed, and the guest rooms were modern, comfortable, and thoughtfully refreshed. This is one of the most historic hotels in Southeast Asia, with a long-standing relationship with the Cambodian royal family. The heritage of the property is immediately felt throughout the building and grounds. Above all, what stood out most to us was the remarkable tenure of the staff. Several team members have been with the hotel since it reopened. For us, this is one of the truest indicators of a genuine luxury property. When a hotel cares for its staff as well as it does its guests, the resulting level of hospitality is something that cannot easily be replicated."

"This is a grand, old hotel. There’s a huge, gorgeous, delightful pool. It is heated to about 90 degrees Fahrenheit. As you’d expect, the in-house restaurants are overpriced. The shower stalls are shockingly tiny. And water leaks excessively onto the floor. Others in our group experienced the same thing so I know it wasn’t just me. The only other issue we had was the service at breakfast. Each day, we ordered tea and each day it took forever for the tea to arrive. Others in our group experienced this as well."
