PB hotel design editorial

Scattered across six hectares of elevated Cambodian farmland on the outskirts of Siem Reap, a village of traditional Khmer stilt houses forms the architectural premise of Zannier Hotels Phum Baitang — green village in Khmer — which opened in 2016. The 45 villas were constructed using reclaimed dark hardwood, hand-woven bamboo screens, and deep thatched roofs that draw directly from vernacular building traditions of the surrounding countryside, achieving something rare in resort design: the feeling of a place that preceded tourism rather than one assembled for it. Stone-paved pathways thread between the structures at ground level, flanked by dense plantings of banana palms, traveller's palms, and tropical canopy that obscure any sense of compound geometry after dark. Inside, the interiors achieve their effect through restraint rather than decoration. Exposed post-and-beam frames of aged timber rise to vaulted ceilings, the structural members left entirely visible against lime-washed plaster walls finished in warm ochre. Oversized slipcovered sofas in natural linen, jute flat-weave rugs, and headboards assembled from salvaged louvred shutters give the rooms the atmosphere of a carefully curated private residence rather than a hotel suite. The open-air bar pavilion carries the same material logic — wide-plank reclaimed timber decking, bamboo armchairs with loose linen cushions, log-section side tables — while the main pool deck extends in a long teak-boarded terrace lined with dark-stained sunloungers, the tiled pool glowing turquoise against the tropical night.

"We stayed 4 nights at Zannier in Siem Reap and it was absolutely stunning. The property is incredible and an amazing place to relax after the visits. The pool area is fantastic and the rooms are great. The staff is also incredible and the service is top notch. One of the very best hotels I have visited in the World!"

"A fantastic oasis of calm and tranquility, set in spectacular yet peaceful surroundings. We’re just coming to the end of a 4 night stay in a pool villa at Phum Baitang. The villas are spacious, very clean, comfortable and very well maintained. All staff are incredibly friendly and greet you with a bow every time they see you. Restaurant food and service are excellent. Even the hotel remork (tuktuk) drivers are incredibly friendly and provide an excellent service. My only criticism is that we booked the fine dining restaurant for my birthday but found out that day, completely by chance, that it was closed as the hotel was quiet. Luckily, both of the hotel restaurants are excellent so we didn’t feel cheated - and they even bought a surprise birthday cake to our villa after dinner. Overall, a perfect resort, both to explore the temples and Siem Reap area but also to relax and unwind. I can’t recommend Phum Baitang enough!"

"Visiting Cambodia for the first time this hotel did not fail to disappoint. From the off set it maintained a high standard. Staff were very attentive and couldn’t do enough for you. The location was set out of the main hustle and bustle of Siem Reap which had negatives and positives. Room was wonderful amongst the rice paddy fields. Being able to mooch about the grounds with a bicycle 🚲 added to their authentic approach. Breakfasts wonderful with lots of choice. Both restaurants delivered delicious food with traditional local foods as well as international dishes. On our last night we had a truly lovely meal served by Hainah at Hang Bay restaurant, who was wonderful. She served us well and managed the children that a rather rude French couple had left to their own devices to run around bothering other guests during their meal. They had no manners but she was first class. Trips organised prior to visit to Angkor Wat and elephant sanctuary. Both experiences enhanced by the tuk tuk rides, which are an absolute must whilst visiting. Would highly recommend staying here but guests must know that it is not in the thick of things in main town. Thank you so much for your hospitality and the parting gift of rice from the fields. Much appreciated"

"Wow wow wow, have absolutely loved our 3 night stay here at ZPB - it’s been everything we were hoping for and more - the authenticity is simply breathtaking, the attention to detail here is so considered and appreciated, the layout, the architecture, the styling and the pure sound of nature is so captivating and from the moment we arrived we welcomed the peace from city life we were craving. The service throughout all departments has been exemplary as has been the food - the taste, presentation is just faultless. I don’t want to give any more away as this would spoil surprise additions to the stay. Suffice to say this is a MUST stay - we stayed in a pool villa which was fabulous, beautiful appointed and very private - the verandah rooms are also just as gorgeous too. Perfectly situated for the essential visit to Angkor Wat and Ta Phom (we took a tuk tuk and so pleased we did this instead of a car) as it really added to the overall experience). Zannier has certainly set the bar high for the rest of our trip, a truly unique, very special haven, for which we feel so thankful to have experienced ❤️"
