PB hotel design editorial

Barely a kilometre off the coast of Sihanoukville, a forested granite outcrop rises from the Gulf of Thailand's turquoise shallows — and it is the decision to leave that island almost entirely intact that defines Six Senses Krabey Island. Opened in 2018, the property's 40 pool villas and pavilions are pressed into a single densely vegetated headland, their low-slung timber and concrete forms visible from the air only because the canopy relents just enough to reveal a solar-panelled roofline and an infinity pool edged in hardwood decking. Timber boardwalks thread along the rocky shoreline rather than cutting through it, a gesture of restraint that recurs throughout the design. The interiors carry the warm, craft-forward material language that Six Senses has refined across its Southeast Asian properties — wide-plank timber floors, teak-panelled headboards, gauze mosquito canopies suspended from simple horizontal poles rather than ornate four-poster frames. Rattan-wrapped coffee tables and open-weave lounge chairs sit beside floor-to-ceiling sliding glass panels that dissolve the boundary between room and jungle. The restaurant draws on the same teak lattice vocabulary: a deep wall of geometric fretwork runs the full length of the dining room, hand-sewn canvas lanterns hang overhead, and the entire glazed facade frames an unobstructed horizon. Hand-painted textile panels depicting deer among flowering branches appear in the villas, grounding the contemporary tropical palette in traditional Cambodian craft.

"Krabey Island is a hidden green gem combining high luxury & harmony with nature. The service is impeccable. The facilities are high-end and cater to your every need. The pain au chocolat is a must-try at breakfast is (coming from a French person). The transfer from the airport to the island is quick and easy. I cannot recommend a stop by Krabey Island for a reconnection with nature & yourself enough! Thank you to the staff, for their kindness and attention to detail. They’ve made our stay - as a family - truly special!"

"We have just returned from an absolutely fabulous holiday partly spent at the Six Senses Krabey Ialand, Cambodia. From the moment we arrived to the time of our departure we were treated both as family and as royalty. We were greeted by our GEM Nam and Christian (Director of rooms). I’d requested a specific Ocean Front Pool Villa Suit and to my delight my request had been accommodated. On our first night I had arranged for a private dinner, Nam had no way of knowing that my wife was aware of this, and was the sole of discretion not mentioning it until I discussed it with her as she did not wish to spoil any surprise. The meal itself was outstanding with a stunning view of the sunset thrown in free of charge. Our waiter that night was Yeng who did everything possible to make the occasion memorable. We payed a number of visits to the Spa for massages, yoga classes and a wellness check, all of which were completed with friendly professionalism, the deep tissue massage being a particular favourite of ours. The resort was quiet at the time of our visit probably down to the global flight disruption caused by the war in the Middle East. The bar staff were exceptional, introducing us to a wide variety of local cocktails, and were perfect ambassadors for the resort. We ate at both the AHA and Tree restaurants are were not disappointed. All the food being of the highest quality. We mentioned that we were particularly looking forward to trying the beef cheek which was not available on the day in question, and the kitchen team went out of their way to secure beef cheek and prepare this for us on another day, it was melt in the mouth gorgeous. We were surprised and delighted to try a new started that the Senior Sous Chef was considering suggesting should be included on the menu, it was a sea food dish served in a bisque, it was stunning. I have read reviews that some guests feel the food is expensive, but in my experience of good restaurants here in the UK you will pay those sorts of prices for food of that quality. We consider ourselves incredibly lucky to have experienced such a peaceful and beautiful resort and even spotted the elusive and rare Silver Langurs monkeys twice during our stay. This was probably the best holiday we have ever had, not only made by the location but by the exceptional team who work there. Thank you one and all."

"Firstly I will start by saying the staff at this resort are amazing. They are so very friendly and cannot do enough to please. “Bong” to everyone, remembering guest names, which is admirable. You truly are their guests. We were met on the jetty by what we assume was the resort manager and our allocated GEM for our stay. The hideaway pool villa did not disappoint and the facilities on arrival were good. Some little treats and an iPad to assist with all devices in your room and pre book services. A fully stocked bar - all of which you had to pay for apart from the water. In all three other establishments we stayed on our trip between Singapore, Cambodia and Vietnam these were complimentary and refreshed daily. Sadly though this was never restocked once items such as Cambodia beer used, with some unusual system of ordering with the iPad, then incurring an in dining room service fee and government charge. The spa was in a wonderful setting and the experience was second to none. They have two very lovely restaurants which have a rotation of when they are open. We stayed 4 nights and only experienced the better of the two serving local food influences - Tree restaurant, on one night. A bizarre arrangement. The other restaurant Aha was wonderful for breakfast, offering international and local flavours. All thoughtfully presented and delicious. However in the evening the restaurant fell short and included items on the menu unavailable for our entire stay, with three appetisers missing on the last evening. Due to the lack of choice we had the in villa dining on one evening. Something we would not normally do. Whilst I appreciate this is recognised as a wellness resort the wine menu was poor and extremely limited. Not sure why that is. Prices overall higher than expected and not value for money. Having just spent 3 nights in Siem Reap in the best hotel available for half the cost it is hard to justify. The most scandalous though is the £322 bill for transfers. Firstly the car transfer from airport followed by the boat. I struggle with this cost as you are already paying high prices for the room. This for a 15 minute trip in total is hard to swallow. An island resort should include this in the price. How else would guests arrive? In all the years I have been travelling we have never incurred such a cost for transfers, even with a four hour trip in Sri Lanka. Moreover if you go outside their schedule you are unfortunate enough to pay a supplementary penalty and double your transfer cost. The only people benefiting from this are the owners. A better option if you feel the need to charge exorbitant prices would be to divide the benefits between the wonderful staff working on the ground. They are all such hard workers. I have never experienced a six senses resort before but over the years have stayed in some high end hotels. With some attention to detail it could be better. Whilst the experience was positive this place really is no Aman or Datai! Sadly likely to have swayed me from looking at any six senses properties if this is the general standard."

"I was not feeling well during all of my stay and the hotel staff did the best they could to help me get what I needed. That was much appreciated. The hotel and rooms are stunning, very new and with a tropical feel to them that really suits the location. The staff were the absolute highlight of the hotel. Everything else was also good. I am a beach lover and I was slightly disappointed that the beach areas in the island are very few and mostly very rocky and with rough waters. It is still very beautiful, though. Great place overall for a few nights."

"Best trip of my life! The hotel was able to accommodate and arrange everything for us. Our personal guide, Navy went above and beyond to ensure we were taken care of and all of our needs were thought of before we even had to vocalize them. He set up a private lunch day on a remote island nearby and ensured 100% privacy for my husband and I. He also set up the most romantic and private valentines day dinner for us. There was so much attention to detail with each excursion and activity we did. Also the message was hands down the best massage i've ever had in my life. Food was amazing. Rooms and views were amazing! Everything was very clean. Staff were amazing. The island only has about 40 villas I believe, so it was very quiet and private. Guest demographic was polished, respectful, and classy. I genuinely did not want to leave!"
