PB hotel design editorial

Marriott's Moxy brand has always thrived on a certain productive tension — budget-conscious bones dressed in design-forward clothing — but placing Moxy Banff inside a UNESCO World Heritage site introduces a constraint most of the brand's urban outposts never have to negotiate. The three-storey structure, clad in a combination of rough-cut local fieldstone, white rendered panels, and warm cedar brise-soleil, answers the Parks Canada requirement that new builds acknowledge their mountain context without tipping into the kitsch of faux-lodge vernacular. The neon pink cursive sign above the entrance, visible in the exterior images, announces that this is emphatically not a heritage property — and that confidence is what makes the building work. Inside, the interiors strike a knowing balance between alpine cabin and sixties road-trip Americana. Guest rooms are wrapped in grey plaid wallcovering, the beds anchored by cylindrical tan leather headboards that carry faint echoes of the Moxy brand's signature tubular furniture vocabulary, with Pendleton-adjacent striped throws grounding the bedding in a Pacific Northwest palette. Exposed concrete waffle-slab ceilings are left raw overhead, industrial pipe curtain tracks and olive-green mesh wall shelves adding workshop texture to compact but carefully considered spaces. The lobby bar leans harder into the retro register — a vintage Volkswagen Type 2 campervan converted into a food counter presides over a curved bar set beneath a concentric timber ceiling canopy, while the courtyard beyond frames a heated plunge pool against tiered timber-railed balconies strung with bistro lights.

About

While most hotels in Banff offer a traditional mountain hotel experience, Moxy Banff stands out from the crowd with its cool, vintage, mid-century modern vibes and unique guest experience. Anchored in the centre by Bar Moxy and flanked on both sides by expansive rundle stone walls and unique precast guest wings that float over the parkades, the guest experience starts with a trip back in time as you enter the hotel to check in at Bar Moxy. Lit by an upside-down bear wearing headphones, the check-in experience sets the tone for the fun ahead as every guest receives a complimentary cocktail. The bar evokes a retro ski vibe with its racetrack design and chairlift-inspired liquor baskets. Bar Moxy’s doors open right onto the courtyard, a fun social space perfect for lounging by the fire or taking a dip in the hot pools. Hungry fun seekers will enjoy delicious apre’s and all-day menu from Bar Moxy’s fully restored ‘66 VW food truck

"Fid not like the hotel or room at all."

"I recently stayed at Moxy Banff and had a positive experience overall. During the night, there was a lot of noise coming from the room above us, which made it difficult to sleep. I first contacted the front desk, and they spoke to the guests upstairs, but unfortunately the noise continued. They kindly told me that if the issue didn’t improve, I could let them know and they would find another solution. When the noise didn’t stop, I reached out again, and they immediately moved me to another room. The new room was quiet and comfortable, and I was finally able to sleep well. I really appreciate how professional, patient, and helpful the staff were throughout the situation. A big thank you to OM and Karl for their excellent service and support. I would definitely recommend this hotel! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️"

"Alex and the Staff at Moxy are AMAZING! The thoughtful kind attention the chose to share with my daughter and I on our Spring Break Trip was Priceless! At every opportunity Alex did something a little unique and thoughtful for my daughter, and it created the magic everyone hopes to experience on their vacation! We cannot wait to return and visit Alex & the MoxyHotel again next year!"

"You won’t find a better place in Banff with the service from heart to your soul. Sudeep, GM at Moxie, runs a flawless hospitality business which cannot be beat by anyone out there. I’ve stayed at this property twice and I can tell you in that my 25+ yrs of traveling, this is by far the best managed property with so many personal touch at every touch!! Don’t even bother looking anywhere else if you are going to Banff National Park."

"After a tasty lunch in Calgary, my sister and her daughter took me to the Moxy Hotel to celebrate my birthday. Part of the Marriott chain, this hotel is located in the Banff downtown area. Our 125 kilometre drive along the TransCanada highway towards the Rocky Mountains presented a winter wonderland. After checking in, we parked in a covered underground stall with an EV charger and plugged in the car. A nearby elevator took us to our room (237) on the second floor. We checked out the accommodations where two large beds, placed end-to-end were the focal part of our room. We tried them out and found the mattresses provided both comfort and good support. Wooden coat hooks dotted the entire length of the opposite wall, giving plenty of hanging space for our clothes. A sliding glass door revealed not only a great view of the Mountains but also had two chairs and a rustic tree stump table. A large television set was placed on the wall near the bed and was mounted on a swiveling mechanism, permitting it to be moved into several good viewing positions. We found a huge supply of towels and face cloths in the shower portion of the bathroom. A mirror hung over a large porcelain sink. A coffee machine with a package of pods sat on the vanity. Across from the sink, wooden pegs were available for hanging towels and our toiletries. After settling in, we examined the gift bag we were given at check-in. We decided to use the beverage tokens and went down to the lobby area where we encountered one of the biggest that I have ever seen. Not only was there plenty of comfortable seating but also a full bar, a Volkswagen Food truck, floor to ceiling glass windows and entertainment. We listened to a singer while enjoying our cocktails. Board games were scattered throughout the room. In addition to other amenities, that made our three-day stay comfortable, a heated, outdoor swimming pool waited for guest use. The Moxy is definitely on my list for a return visit."
